office has dismissed all charges against two alpha tau omega brothers accused of assaulting a bethlehem woman and her husband during a party at the fraternity the charges were filed privately by dawn san tiago 20 534 broadway who claimed to have been punched in the mouth and nose by one brother and that a second ripped her shirt pulled off her bra and made lewd suggestions to her a preliminary interview with the da was set for last friday morning after santiago filed the charges with bethlehem district magistrate john gombosi according to a da's office spokesman the charges were dismissed when miss santiago failed to appear for the interview at the inter view assistant da james connell would have reviewed santiago's charges questioned her about the incident and then decided if the case should be pursued the spokesman said that santiago still has the option to appeal the decision to dismiss the charges but that would entail bring the charges before a judge who would then decide if prosecu tion was warranted ato president jim suerman said sunday night that his house had not yet been notified of the da's decision he said he would not comment on the dropping of the charges until after he had con sulted with his attorney at the time of the incident campus police inves tigated and decided that not enough evidence was present for them to file criminal charges against the two atos chief eugene dax said they recom mended the private filing of criminal charges to santiago and her husband as an option if they wanted to pursue the matter gombosi said that a private citizen has the right to privately file criminal charges against another party if law enforcement authorities decline to do so the case received local attention when santi ago and her husband went to the bethlehem globe times about three weeks after the incident and reported that they had filed charges against the two brothers pi lam probations lifted temporarily by pete trumbore the dean of students office has temporarily lifted the alcohol ban on pi lam until the faculty appeals committee renders a deci sion on the fraternity's appeal filed yesterday coor dinator of greek affairs michael boyd said the com mittee is scheduled to review the case thursday boyd said an abeyance of sanctions in discipline case appeals is traditionally honored during the appeal review period according to the sudent hanbook the com mittee must render a deci sion on the appeal within 10 days following its request the fraternity filed a four point appeal citing specific instances of violation of due process during the hearing only an appeal on the grounds of due process is allowed according to the handbook pi lam president eric hoffman said sunday night he was pretty optimistic about the chances for a suc cessful appeal but added cautiously we were optim istic about the initial hear ing too lafayette bus mishap by karen schoonover assistant news editor a 91-year-old scranton man was killed and a woman critically injured after a bus carrying the lafayette col lege lacrosse team collided with two cars sunday between 6 and 6:30 p.m according to associated press and state police reports the accident occurred on interstate 84 near orange county on the team's return trip from the west point mil itary academy according to state police according to the morning call as of monday morning family members had not been notified and the man's name not released it is also unknown whether the man was a passenger or a driver in one of the cars involved the woman amilcar bar celona 24 remains in eliza beth horton hospital with severe head and chest injur ies according to a hospital spokesman mercy hospital spokes man said that 16 people had been taken there however only lafayette coach bill lawson was admitted who is currently listed in satisfac tory condition also taken to mercy hospital but treated and released was 20-year old team member robert bowen the spokesman said according to the morning call account herman kis siah lafayette dean of stu dents had spoken to lawson who according to the dean said in an attempt to avoid a collision unsuccessfully as it turned out the bus went off the shoulder of the road and flipped new science college could split faculty by lynn anne miller lehigh's plan to improve its quality of the sciences as outlined in the most recent planning document may lead to fundamental changes within the university's structure a committee headed by trustee william hittinger will examine the reorganization of the sciences at the college and departmental level according to bob carson associate arts college dean carson described the sciences as being artificaily split with the departments of physics and chemistry more closely aligned with the engineering college this has been to the disadvantage of programs in the natural sciences especially geophysics and biochemistry the committee will promote scientific research increase the enrollemnt at the undergraduate and graduate level and purchase new and upgraded equipment also the committee will determine whether or not the science departments should be reorganized pos new atmosphere in taylor by liz carr this year's new residential building taylor college has created a warm and positive atmos phere among the students and faculty living there according to residents it's not quite a fraternity but you can make better relationships with your peers and profes sors than any other place on campus according to sophomore fabio calia taylor college is the newest residential dormi tory on campus furnished with air conditioning three lounges and television sets with cable and home box office according to calia some of the many benefits of taylor are planned events including dance par ties pub nights formats at the university center and trips to new york city so many other things have been planned for the year we have tailgate parties and a bunch of meetings planned to get to know peope calia said it is nice because the atmosphere is perfect for partying yet it is also great for studying taylor college presently houses 160 students consisting of freshmen and upperclassmen men and women economics professor j.r aronson is the faculty adviser who lives in taylor with his wife why i chose to live in taylor colege is really a mystery aronson said it is probably because i like experiments and i was in the position to take advantage of it so far it is fantastic there has been such an outpouring of ideas it has been hard to control our appetities for all of them he descibed activity at taylor college called high juice almost every day about 10 student and two faculty families sit around for about 45 minutes and have juice and cheese before dinner then they go to dinner as a group aronson said that he hopes to continue this activity throughout the year for it really creates a nice atmosphere despite the many positive comments from peo ple who really enjoy taylor college there are still some negative comments from students who really felt close to the building which was once knows as taylor hall the dorm really had a lot of character the paint was peeling off the walls and the plumbing was so loud it used to wake me up but it was an all-male dorm so you could be as rude as you wanted to be they would charge us for every thing one time they charged us for a fire extin guisher that was used in a real fire we all loved the place but at the same time we got ripped off it definately needed to be repaired i just wish they would have left
