as harvard law professor and expert on personnel pri vacy and the media arthur miller spoke m packard lab process begins in tobak tenure lawsuit by martine costello ass't desk editor james tobak former lehigh assistant professor of law told the b&w recently m a telephone interview that his lawsuit against the university is m the discovery stage tobak cited his involvement with the affirmative action committee as one reason for his denial of tenure last year in the process for receiving tenure which is a lifetime appointment to the staff tobak received a majority of votes from the accounting and law departments tenured faculty yet the dean's counsel inter vened and overruled the faculty decision claiming that tobak had failed to contribute pro ductive and relevant scholar ship specifically published works which constitutes one of the requirements for granting tenure tobak stated that it was hard to play the decent fellow m an atmosphere at the univer sity where doors were closed and questions remained unans wered creating a subtle atti tude barrier against him although he wasn't making waves according to tobak the administration used a dif ferent standard m judging him than it had for other candidates who did not actively support or develop an affirmative action program in response tobak is suing lehigh for compensatory dam age m the amount of 825,000 and punitive damages m the amount of 10,000 the 825,000 is based on 33 years of salary tobak claims he would have received had he been tenured he argued that lehigh's deci sion was a breach of contract under the lehigh policy book procedures regulations and requirements p r & r because he had published four articles two of which were major ones described as being of very high scholastic caliber during his career at lehigh he added that there were people both before me at the same time as me and fol lowing me who were granted tenure whose record of publi cations was not better than mine some members of the faculty and administration have refused to comment on tobak's tenure denial due to the sensi tive nature of the case arthur webster chairman of the southsiders prepare for local merchant a southside merchants fair organized by local proprietors will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m to 6 p.m m the new street area between third and fourth streets the fair is designed to help lehigh students become more aware of the new street area and to feel comfortable visiting it adrienne redd a 1984 lehigh graduate and owner of the saurus a used bookstore said there is growing excitement m the vicinity she said the fair will create a sense of unity among the merchants tina kowalski owner of the funhouse who will arrange entertainment for the fair said she anticipates a large crowd of all ages who will enjoy the wide variety of activities the new street band show which will be located m the parking lot across from pat's news stand will present rock and jazz music breakdancing and other shows there will also be a raffle of several hundred dollars worth of cash and coupon prizes at 5 p.m registration for the drawing will take place at participating stores displaying colored balloons sac attack b&w pholo by heather dunn thursday's sac night packed grace lounge with hundreds of freshmen trying to find an outlet for their enthusiasm and seniors trying to find marketable extra curricular activities for their resumes miller's court convenes in press ethics presentation by karen wigh a mock jury presentation was the for mat of a lecture wednesday given by arthur miller host of the television show miller's court miller used a jury of students profes sional reporters and a lehigh journal ism professor to examine the conflicts between freedom of press and the right to privacy m his lecture titled ' media vs privacy miller a harvard law professor is nationally known for his work on court procedure copyright and unfair compe tion and the right of privacy he has written more than 20 books on the subjects in the mock jury situation miller des cribed several hypothetical situations to the jury then asked questions to which the members responded jury members argued and debated the points of law as miller challenged their responses one hypothetical situation involved a board director who had previously served as the president of the united state's chief adviser eight years ago reliable documents were sent to a local newspaper which said that the board member drinks excessively gambles is mentally ill and has illcit affairs miller then asked his jury if they would print a story on the character several jury members said that they would print the story since they believed it was newsworthy miller attacked each response and questioned the jury lehigh on late night letter man late night tv viewers were treated to a surprise on tuesday night on late night with david letter man at the beginning of the show letterman men tioned the lehigh under shorts that two lehigh students gave him the underwear sold by the senior class were boxer shorts with lu on the front and lehigh m big letters across the back sophomore mike ru bright seniors carl
