during lehigh's planning process an effort has been undertaken by the administration and faculty to move lehigh into a position of increasing distinction and recog nized distinction as a university not as an insti tute of technology but as a university ' ' president peter likins said at yesterday's meeting of the faculty according to likins this goal cannot be achieved until the university reaches the point when all aspects of the university especially the college of arts and sciences have the recognized respect that they fairly deserve we have work to do likins said and we are committed to doing that work in the area of the arts and sciences the process to elevate the arts college to the status it deserves ' is slated to begin with the five sciences currently within the arts college mathematics chemistry physics biology and geology as a strategic matter we decided in the course of last year's deliberations to make our initial push in the sciences " he said in his address to the faculty insofar as we have discretion in deciding where to push where to put our ener gies where to put our resources we want to make that push in the first instance in the sciences following the meeting likins said that the main reason for the decision to begin the process with the sciences had to do with the university's image because lehigh is seen primarily as an engineering school likins said that it is easier at this time to attract both outside funding and per sonnel to the sciences this engineering and the sciences is where our money comes from likins said however that the process of raising the reputation of the arts college at lehigh will not be limited strictly to the sciences right now our emphasis is on the sciences but our eyes are on the horizon he said the administration's objective is to eventually elevate the arts and sciences evenly across the spectrum he went on to say that the university suffers because of its reputation as lehigh tech a school big on engineering with little else to offer as part of the overall process associate dean of the arts college bobb carson will be working closely with the heads of the biology geological sciences and mathematics departments within the college according to a memorandum distrib uted to arts faculty on friday carson's duties have been redefined to give him special responsi bility for helping these departments achieve their goals as outlined in the university planning document according to the memo the redefinition includes partial responsibility in personnel mat ters leaves of absence appointments reappoint ments promotion and tenure departmental budget and salary administration program faculty and curriculum development both undergraduate and graduate expansion of research activity improvement of physical facil ities and planning the changes in carson's duties are not per manent in the usual sense the memo states but it will remain effective so long as our evolv ing university planning is served by it carson's position as associate dean is a revolving two-year post which as long as our situation requires it will be dedicated to a more specific role with the sciences also at yesterday's meeting jack fulton director of development announced that 19.4 million in total support was donated to lehigh this year reflecting an increase of 26 percent since last year he said this was the most successful year for donations in lehigh's history the year before there was a 33 percent increase in dona tions to the university see delts page 4
