' ' gomez said that an announcement was sent to all engineering seniors at the end of last semester in addition to being posted across the university according to the announcement the graduate curriculum in mse is designed to develop engineers who can design install operate and change manufactur ing systems made up of people machines new materials information systems and appropriate technology brett saylor a pennsylvania state university graduate who is currently employed with american telephone and telegraph at&t thought the pro gram was well organized and said he was happy that the program was bring ing together people from industry jects and travel to various facilities for tours litt called the new mse program a joint venture between industry and the university he added that he felt the program here and at the other schools would help to create revolutions in manufacturing litt explained that the students currently in the program have all come from industry have many backgrounds and are on full salary while participating in the program carlos gomez who received both his bachelor's in chemical engineering and his mba from the university is the mse program coordinator according to gomez there are 13 students in this year's program representing seven dif ferent companies gomez explained that the program should help to make the relation between industry and lehigh more interactive classes started last week for a new graduate program in manufacturing systems engineering mse , according to division director of electrical and computer engineering roger nagel the new program was approved by the education policy committee edpol on dec 12 he said nagel elaborated that the program involves courses and faculty from all of the departments in the college of engi neering and physical sciences and some from the college of business and eco nomics successful completion of the 30 credit hour program will lead to the mas ter of science degree in mse the program was made possible by two grants from the international busi ness machines corp ibm in the amount of 2 million each according to nagel the first grant was used exclu sively for equipment however the by stuart silberman sorority rush starts off well participation rises since 83 second grant will be used to develop the curriculum for the new program he said professor of management benjamin litt a member of the mse program committee explained that the univer sity was chosen for the grant out of about 60 schools who submitted proposals to ibm for consideration of this program other schools which were chosen are stanford university university of wis consin georgia institute of technology and rensselaer polytechnic institute he added litt said that the program is designed to run from january to january is full time and includes the summer in the program he added that students in the program must take six required courses two of which are in the field of manage ment and several electives nagel added that during the summer the stu dents will participate in two special pro by clare crabtree formal sorority rush got off to a good start last thursday with close to 200 girls attending parties in lower centennials held by each of the five sororities according to stacey abarnathy sorority adviser the number of rushees registered is about 50 more than last year abernathy said i'm very impressed with the enthusiasm of both rushees and sorority sisters she added so far rush is going very well suzy eckert 84 panhellenic panhel presi dent and gamma phi beta sister said however some of the freshmen are confused because the informational meeting that was scheduled for wednes day was canceled because of weather there had to be several changes in the structure of formal rush from last year because of the addition of a fifth sorority eckert explained there have been basically no prob lems so far with these changes although it was kind of tough having five parties in one night eckert said by the end everyone.was exhausted next year the structure will defninitely have to be changed with the addition of a sixth sorority we're pleased with both the amount and quality of girls going through rush mimi judlowe 84 alpha phi sorority president said the five parties in cen tennials were a little long but it's impor tant that we have five sororities so the benefits outweigh the disadvantages she said nina rinaldi 84 delta gamma soror ity president agreed rush is also a lot better this year because of the more structured informal rush she added alpha omicron pi aoii sorority the newest sorority will be holding their rush parties in the university center uc according to president teresa kil cullen 84 we've had no problems so far considering that a lot of the girls in aoii have never rushed before they're doing a super job she said from a better position and times and attitudes have changed he said this time some of the people who were hardline against it four years ago came out and voted in favor of it the proposal had a great deal of support going in both ryan and bai lin pointed out it had the full support of the forum and of university president likins who recomended it be adopted ryan said in addition ryan said the proposal was pres ented in a better well thought out for mat which made it that much easier for the tustees to approve the forum group that made the presenta tion did a much better job on its home work than four years ago he said the advantages clearly out weighed the disadvantages he said ryan added that the study found that the living situation provided a more stable and comfortable environment for the residents preparation key for change in trustee housing decision by peter trumbore the university board of trustees have passed a proposal to introduce coed-by-room housing next year in both taylor residential college and williams house whereas a similar proposal was voted down by the trus tees four years ago according to pro fessor of geology and forum xiv trustee representative donald ryan if it proves successful and there's a demand for it then the trustees might consider expanding the coed by-room option throughout the uni versity ryan said there is no guarantee that the program will work however even on a limited basis if it falls on its face then the trustees and the university will prob ably drop it preparation was the key to getting the proposal adopted said dave bai lin 84 forum trustee representa tive this year it was presented forum elections scheduled tomorrow in uc to fill posts by peter trumbore elections will be held wednesday in the university center uc lobby near the post office for two student positions on the forum xiv to fill vacancies left at the end of last semester according to martha mahoney 84 forum co chairman the two spots to be filled are for an interfraternity council ifc representative and an at-large representative these openings are nothing new mah oney said vacancies always open up in the spring the openings come about because of people going away getting censured by the forum or by simply quitting she said she would not give specific reasons for the two present vacancies however
