panhellenic council panhel president it's all very much up in the air and we have no idea what we are going to do yet eckert said four sororities can vote alpha omega pi aopi is not eligi ble and the four are split 50/50 on every decision according to betsy rand 84 panhel vice president in charge of expansion panhel is still working on selling smags saucon married and graduate students units to students we really haven't made a decision on the issue a possible group of 40 students is inter ested in moving over to smags next year according to residence halls council(rhc president bonnie solt 85 there is an interest on the part of the students it is just not as much as we had originally anticipated she added another group of 30 students was given an extension of the deadline to next thursday to recruit up to 10 more stu dents she explained if the group of 30 becomes a group of 40 two sororities will move over solt explained as it stands now one sorority will defi nitely move to the centennials because the new sorority aopi was colonized out of residence halls one of the existing sororities will take its place and aopi will move to smags she explained ' chances are much slimmer of getting a third house over solt said groups of four students may sign up for apart ments in smags and if enough groups of four sign up the third house could move over she explained i don't know how many groups there are but last time we checked it didn't look like we would get enough groups the possibility of two sororities in the centennials and two sororities in smags was described by dean of students wil liam quay as an ideal situation for the transition year the new colony would be with an existing sorority and two sorori ties would be over on this side helping the transition to this side of the mountain the forum passed a resolution that sor ority members could move to campus only if a corresponding number of stu dents would move to smags quay said in response to rumors of student disin terest on the move quay answered that the move was a voluntary interchange it is up to the students to decide whether they want to do it or now our purpose is to open up a possibility for the students if they want it he said it is a panhel decision and whatever they decide we will stand by said mimi judlowe 84 alpha phi president we will be equally as happy whether we move or not and the number of sisters that could live in the house would depend on how much room we have in the house this would not affect the number of rushes we would take she added i don't think it would hurt rush with the idea that eventually all the sororities would move on campus from what i understand siegrist said adding that delta gamma living on the other side of the mountain did not affect rush by adviser and we meet on the average of once a week for one and one-half to two hours we help students spot their interests and find information to aid decision making ralph lindgren chairman of the philosophy department said it provides students with a point and pers on of reference to help keep their balance in the first few months of school and to provide a little information to help them make choices rather than just fitting into by beau stacom because they do not realize the options available to them in the college of arts and science it has been a common prac tice in the past for many arts students to transfer into a different college within the university according to mark ellis associate dean of the college of arts and science a lot of students thought they had to be in business and engineering in order to prepare themselves for life william newman chairman of the psychology department explained newman asserted that these ideas were often byproducts of parental pressure inse curities about what students thought they should do when they got out of col lege peer pressure and sheer ignorance about what the arts college has to offer the vast number of back door transfers from the arts college to other colleges within the university may have been affected by certain problems with the advising system newman explained the students and the faculty didn't spend much time talking to each other and this created an uneven quality control there was some good advising going on and some bad so students felt alienated " he said newman added that the new arts and science program instituted this year as a requirement for all freshmen in the college of arts and science is part of a new advising system this new advis ing is an attempt to bring students and advisers
