concert according to vice president and provost arthur humphrey was made because the promoter john scher had already invested 25,000 in tickets and promotion and had threatened to file suit if the con cert were cancelled we just couldn't waste 25,000 humphrey said secondary reasons for holding the event were cited by peter fioretti 82 last year's student activities council sac president who talked to humph rey and other administrators tuesday asking them not to cancel the concert aside from the suit fioretti pointed out that cancellation could scare promo ters from using stabler in the future because of the unreliability of the uni versity a grateful dead concert was cancelled last semester by the adminis tration because it was scheduled during re view-consultation study rcs h'.vv '■' •■t dead concert students unhappy with role in task force policies faculty member reject sexual harassment policy by mark carroll some of the students who served on the six summer task forces while express ing general satisfaction with their role in those proceedings indicated that the administration's social policies were well established m many areas before the task forces began their review many of those students further said that by holding the task force discussions during the summer student participa tion was probably hampered kuss said student participation in the other task force which was responsible for drawing up a wide range of cultural and social activities was generally much greater kuss added that although the adminis trators were sincere in wanting our suggestions he was pessimistic as to whether the suggestions would ever be implemented kuss major criticism however was of the administration's decision to hold the task force meetings during the summer in order to have the new social policies ready for the beginning of this semester kuss said that the two or three months taken by the task forces to discuss and prepare their reports was not enough time to do an effective job and that had the task forces met during the current see student page 12 the task forces were established to define new behavioral and disciplinary codes for individuals and living groups as well as create new social and cultural programs according to joe kuss 82 the effec tiveness of student participation and contributions depended largely upon what task force he or she was involved with kuss who served on two task forces administration of discipline and alter native social programs said his partici pation in the former was limited because of the legalistic nature of the discussions a lot of it went right over my head kuss said he added that he felt that much of the task force work which con sisted mainly of rewriting and rewording the previous discipline code seemed to have been already laid out by the admin istrators of the task force ib&w pholo by stephen krlssi faculty members assembled at monday's faculty meeting voted against the approval of the university's new sexual harassment policy therefore was a unilateral decision the faculty voted not to approve the policy and george dinsmore professor of civil engineering moved that the proposal be given to kd pol for further study dinsmore vice-chairman of forum xii urged faculty to become involved in the forum subcommittees he cited the campus life subcommittee with 14 stu dent and three faculty members as an example of where faculty support is needed according to dinsmore eight faculty members from the arts college 10 from the engineering college three from the business college and one from the school of education are needed to fill faculty places on the forum also at monday's meeting university president dem ing lewis proclaimed the 1981-82 academic year as the tenth anni versary of co-education at the univer sity the addition of women to the school has enriched academic social cultural and athletic events and encouraged all members of the university to celebrate the occasion the university discipline committee was expanded following a motion from richard high assistant professor of psy chology and member of the nominations committee by mary frances donley and sharon haggerty after discussion the university's new sexual harassment policy was voted down by the faculty and turned over to the educational policy committee ktipol for further study vice president and provost arthur humphrey presented the motion to the faculty at mondays meeting proposing that sexual harassment complaints against staff members be handled by the human relations committee composed of five tenured faculty members each serving a five-year term on a staggered basis he said in response to the provost's proposal gregory mcallister professor of mathe matics questioned the definition of sex ual harassment as contained in the law of the campus describing it as very imprecise later mcallister clarified his posi tion p.r and r says that discipline is in the hands of the faculty and the presi dent discipline involves problems of sexual harassment therefore defini tions and sanctions regarding sexual harassment are to be made by the faculty and the president page eight of law of the
