part that the university plays in the social and financial life of the community professors j w barker and s s.seyfert conducted the club mem bers through the electrical depart ment and professor f v larkin conducted them through the me chanical department of the build ing john maxwell assistant alumni association secretary was also a guest at the meeting blakes hear becker lehigh entertains dwight school men sinkinson talks to cosmos club for visitors fred trafford and union play host severe criticism of the abundance and placing of the new no park ing signs was expressed at the reg ular meeting of o d k held last night in drown hall the opinion expressed was that some of the signs which were erected last week were placed in advantageous places while others were not especially those which now adorn the mem orial trees near the entrance to the gym the placing of the signs on these trees which stand as memor ials to lehigh men who fell in the world war was the object of the greatest criticism the question was also raised as to the advisability of placing the signs where they are absolutely not needed such as the ones placed on the trees border ing the drive from the chapel past the president's residence a motion was proposed and pass ed that the board of control of athletics be recommended to auth orize the placing of class numerals on freshman dinks it was the opin ion that many freshmen do not wear their numerals after winning them because they do not care to buy a sweater and if the small nu merals were placed on the dinks it would be a distinctive and practical way of wearing them frosh rules changed the sophomore class was criticiz ed for the new rules which go into effect today of making all freshmen walk and run backwards to and from classes it was considered wholly unnecessary and almost an impossibility in cases whore a man is required to get from one end of the campus to the other in ten minutes a last minute change was made in these rules this morning by the sophomore class the freshmen must reverse their coats and dinks but do not have to go backwards a strong effort will be made this year to induce the faculty to al low two or three college meetings a semester this custom of college meetings with regularly scheduled hours was abolished by the faculty two years ago because of interfer ence with class schedules since the exodus of this custom it has been almost impossible to get the whole student body together for college functions such as pep meeting pledgings and the awarding of ath letic honors professor bradley were made known to each freshman who at tended a meeting held for that pur pose thursday october 9 each freshman received his grades on a typewritten sheet seventy - five freshmen attended the meeting professor hughes said that these examinations are frequently called intelligence tests but that this term is misleading as they really test the methods of attack and re flection of the student in compari son with other lehigh freshmen these tests are given with the pur pose of aiding those responsible for the guidance and advice to the stu dent throughout his college career the test was given in four parts geometrical analogy completion artificial language opposites and mathematics dr hughes stated that according to the results obtain ed lehigh had more well trained freshmen than the average college the 50 percentile lehigh freshman has an ability equal to the 64 per centile at all colleges and to the 95 percentile man in the population at large negligent freshmen feel wrath of commonly termed asbestos are the titles of the two articles by h v anderson and g l clark which have appeared in august and october issues of the journal of industrial and engineer ing chemistry these articles are the results of experiments in the application of x-ray diffraction methods to indus trial materials conducted at the university of illinois by h v an derson assistant professor of chemistry at lehigh diffraction data given the most recent articles gives x-ray deffraction data on 30 differ ent specimens of absestos minerals and contains 77 x-ray photographs diffraction patterns were obtained for natural fibres for the same fibres after digestion with concen trated acid after ignition to con stant weight at 9000 c the funda mental identity period in angstrom units 10-bcm along the fibre axis has been determined for each speci men reference is also made to the fact that x-ray photographs reveal the stage of metamorphism from the country rock the unit crystal cell dimensions for chrysotile asbestos calculated from x-ray data are in cluded the fact is also established that x-ray fine structure analysis will give more valuable and funda mental information as to the ulti mate structure of these minerals and of other materials as well the first article deals with the application of x-ray diffraction methods to ceramic materials to reveal the ultimate structure dwight school men sinkinson talks to cosmos club for visitors fred trafford and union play host severe criticism of the abundance and placing of the new no park ing signs was expressed at the reg ular meeting of o d k held last night in drown hall the opinion expressed was that some of the signs which were erected last week were placed in advantageous places while others were not especially those which now adorn the mem orial trees near the entrance to the gym the placing of the signs on these trees which stand as memor ials to lehigh men who fell in the world war was the object of the greatest criticism the question was also raised as to the advisability of placing the signs where they are absolutely not needed such as the ones placed on the trees border ing the drive from the chapel past the president's residence a motion was proposed and pass ed that the board of control of athletics be recommended to auth orize the placing of class numerals on freshman dinks it was the opin ion that many freshmen do not wear their numerals after winning them because they do not care to buy a sweater and if the small nu merals were placed on the dinks it would be a distinctive and practical way of wearing them frosh rules changed the sophomore class was criticiz ed for the new rules which go into effect today of making all freshmen walk and run backwards to and from classes it was considered wholly unnecessary and almost an impossibility in cases whore a man is required to get from one end of the campus to the other in ten minutes a last minute change was made in these rules this morning by the sophomore class the freshmen must reverse their coats and dinks but do not have to go backwards a strong effort will be made this year to induce the faculty to al low two or three college meetings a semester this custom of college meetings with regularly scheduled hours was abolished by the faculty two years ago because of interfer ence with class schedules since the were made known to each freshman who at tended a meeting held for that pur pose thursday october 9 each freshman received his grades on a typewritten sheet seventy - five freshmen attended the meeting professor hughes said that these examinations are frequently called intelligence tests but that this term is misleading as they really test the methods of attack and re flection of the student in compari son with other lehigh freshmen these tests are given with the pur pose of aiding those responsible for the guidance and advice to the stu dent throughout his college career the test was given in four parts geometrical analogy completion artificial language opposites and mathematics dr hughes stated that according to the results obtain ed lehigh had more well trained freshmen than the average college the 50 percentile lehigh freshman has an ability equal to the 64 per centile at all colleges and to the 95 percentile man in the population at large negligent freshmen feel wrath of articles are the results of experiments in the application of x-ray diffraction methods to indus trial materials conducted at the university of illinois by h v an derson assistant professor of
