freshmen in fact all freshmen and all scared they sat in the chairs in the read ing room of drown hall meditat ing on their sins and wishing they were someplace else for tonight the sophomore council that aug ust body of inquisitors was to pass judgment upon the . mand show them the error of their ways the murderer waiting for the jury's verdict could rest even easier than these law breakers because he may appeal to a higher court but only heaven itself is higher than the sophomore council this night it seemed that many had been called and from the sanguine remarks of the group meeting in an adjoining room all were to be choosen — for what — to give the campus a laugh no such a thing would be un heard of — choosen to act as object lessons to brother frosh on the dire penalties that might ensue should they forget even for a minute that the ywere freshmen a door opens smith the wheels of justice have started and smith vanishes into that room from whose bourne no traveler re turns — unscathed such entities as jones ironbottom or whatever names these freshmen have sink back in seats pass hands over moist brows and heave momentary sighs of relief — tough on poor old smit ty but somebody had to be first — hope they're not too hard on him how little they know the lustful appetite of the mighty soph a number of voices reaches the reading room inside the prosecut ing attorney is speaking name robert thomas smith say sir y-yes sir a whispered conference is held and then " accused of stepping on the grass and not saying hello what have you to say for yourself i-i-i was just '' shut up that's no ex cuse another whispered confer ence is held but there reaches the ears of figetting smith such words as haircut — sign on his " who wouldn't shiver if he were to hear that smith provide meat and drink for the hungry ogres engineers club meets monday a strong brown and white team flushed with last week's victory and confident of its strength is de termined to repel the invasion of the pennsylvania military college gridmen tomorrow afternoon in taylor stadium at two thirty al though a spirit of optimism is evi dent in the lehigh camp the men are not over-confident in spite of the fact that accord ing to all football dope p m c should not offer any too great op position to the home team there has been no let down in austy tate's intensive training program and scrimmages have been daily oc currences as usual the men are in splendid physical condition and two of the injured players are back in uniform again both porky flynn who was out with a sprain ed ankle and f stewart who frac tured a collarbone in the early part of the season reported for practice on tuesday austy was well pleased with the showing made by the team last saturday and it is likely that the same line-up with the exception of the ends will start against p m c that started against st john's the two flank men will probably be charley pur vis and frank rushong both of whom played excellent games last week p m c defeated in first game the reports from the chester camp indicate that coach si paux tis has put his p m c gridmen through an intensive training per iod this week in preparation for the big battle here on saturday the showing made by the cadets last week against prospect park club was not very promising the score ending 2-0 in favor of the prospect club fumbles were frequent and the line was slow on their feet but the coaches have been busy rem edying these weaknesses warren p m c.'s left halfback and layler the cadet fullback fea tured the game last saturday war ren the only cadet who was effec tive against the brown and white basketball team last winter proved himself a consistent punter his kicks invariably gaining ground for his team layler crashed through the prospect line several times and seems to be the best running back on the team . another back long is the visitors captain the two teams will probably line up as follows lehigh p m austy tate captain hyde and dexter bullard were the chief speakers of the evening austy told the class he had received many let ters from alumni in praise of the rejuvenated football squad and captain hyde spoke hopefully of the new material that is at lehigh this year through the courtesy of mr gans manager of the globe thea tre an interesting vaudeville act was staged for the crowd routine business and the present ing of several reports were the most important matters brought before the board of trustees at the regular founder's day meeting last wednesday afternoon at the beth lehem club formal approval was made of the degrees awarded wednesday morn ing reports on enrollment statis tics the summer school session new members of the faculty and scholarships and loans were pre sented the financial report for the fiscal year ending august 31 was made the balance sheet showing assets in excess of 10,000,000 in cluding endowment and plant the statement of operations showed in come and expenditures of over 1,070,000 the surplus for the year was 13,000 after setting aside 125,000 for improvements and building operations the meeting was preceded by a luncheon where william m lew is president of lafayette and christian f gauss dean of prince ton both of whom received honor ary degrees here wednesday were present as guests the eastern association for the selection of football officials of which walter r okeson of lehigh is commissioner has published a pamphlet to facilitate the study of football rules this booklet edited b yokeson has been sent to all of ficials under the regime of the eastern association the main pur pose of the work is not to give a set of rules but a condensation of all that are used a great deal football has so many laws that the average official would be in a quandry if he attempted to memor ize the entire group thus it is easily seen that ethe plan of study suggested by okey is necessary to give the field bosses some sys tem to enable them to grasp the sit uation more readily commission er okeson carefully reminds those interested that these are not a set of rules but merely a few of the more important ones to such officials as are inter ested how to study the rules okeson accomplishes his purpose by using a few key rules which he believes will help the official to draw a series of mental pictures of the complete set of regulations he does this by paraphrasing each rule in as few words as will give him this mental picture the complete text of okeson's letter preceding the pamphlet is as follows at the five interpretation meet ings this fall i attempted to give the officials a method for studying the rules which i had found to be of help to me it consists in get ting a mental picture of the essen tial part of each rule and this is done by paraphrasing each rule for yourself using just enough words to bring before your mind's eye a picture of the phases of the game which that rule covers as an ex ample i read a digest of the rules which gives to me that series of mental pictures so many men have asked for this digest that we are reproducing it herewith let me warn you that this is not a condensed set of rules nor is it something you can use instead of your rule boo it is merely an exhibit wlji£h may aid you in pre paring youjitdwn digest unless you do prepare it yourself you will prof it nothing my words mean some thing to me they may only con fuse you put the digest in your own words and then you will have something which will conjure up for you the series of pictures you wish to inscribe indelibly on your mind then study your rules care fully noting any of the minor points not covered by your original word irig and add them to the picture finally study your penalties and get them in the picture also you will find that as each game unfolds before you in a series of actual pic tures these will automatically check against your mental pictures and register as either right or wrong if something is wrong you will know the answer walter r okeson commissioner of offcials sept 26 1928 my talk at the meetings also in cluded something of the history of each rule i have not the time ta reproduce this but it will be worth while to acquaint yourself with the history of the rules perhaps i may be able to find time later on to re produce for you an outline of this history annual reception and mrs c r rich ffds will be at home to the faculty rom 8 to 11 p m on tuesday oct 16 the president's reception to he faculty is an annual affair pre-medical society the are skyward by lt commander byrd and the great american band wagon by merz two valuable volumes besides this list two important books have recently been added to the library — a facsimile of george washington's accounts with the united states during the revolu tionary war and a memorial vol ume containing the technical pa pers of the late prof ariyo imo kuty of japan the facsimile of george wash ington's accounts with the united states during the revolutionary war was presented to the library by miss clara b sayre of beth i lehem who is a niece of the late robert sayre a former trustee of the university this book contains the accounts of all of washington's financial transactions with the gov ernment from june 1775 until june 1783 it also contains a number of curios which though not a part of it are inserted in scrap book fash ion two of these valuable histor ical curios are a piece of red velvet taken from the pew which wash ington and his family used when they attended services in chrjgt church philadelphia and a broad side of a sonata which was sung by children when washington passed under the triumphal arch in tren ■ton new jersey on april 21 1789 letters from bishops and other church dignitaries can also be found in the book another of the curios is a copy of the vicksburg citizen dated july 2 1863 it is printed on the back of figured wall paper and a note at the bottom of the last column announces that this will be the last copy of the paper because grant has captured the city four pieces of paper money which were printed during the rev olutionary war are likewise pasted in the book beside facsimiles of the same pieces this volume will form a very interesting addition to the library's treasure chest the imokuty memorial commit tee of japan has presented to the library a handsome memorial vol ume containing the technical pa pers of the late prof ariya imo kuty and certain papers read by his former pupils this volume makes a distinct addition to the sci entific and technical collection of the library and is a fitting memor ial to a great professor drown hall was far too small f orthe large crowd which attended the annual founder's day dance given by the arcadia last tuesday evening the music was furnished by dave fluharty's ramblers who were popular with the students last year due to the lifting of the cur few rule the freshmen turned out large numbers although the stag line was one of the largest in years there were enough girls present to keep the floor full at all times the arcadia will use the pro ceeds toward sending the band to cambridge for the harvard game prof and mrs carothers and dr and mrs bull chaperoned the af fair recreational business he has con structed a wood slide from the li brary road down the hill parallel to the old library walk lehigh men will remember the difficulty they had in sliding down the li brary walk in icy weather with its old bed of cinders pooch has improved this by constructing his new slide with planed and polished boards after the cold weather ar rives pooch is considering pour ing water on the slide to freeze however if freezing weather does not soon arrive pooch may soap the slide with 99 44-100 percent pure ivory lecture committee will hold meeting wednesday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock the lecture committee will hold an open meeting in the committee room to discuss plans formulated last may the scheme proposed at the la meeting was to provide a raei.a for the student societies such 9 the robert blake and other sim ilar clubs to have prominent and interesting speakers to ad dress them if the committee finds that there is a popular appeal for speakers by the members of the societies interested money from the lecture fund will be used to help defray the expenses there fore professor sidney w brown of the committee wishes that every organization that de sires to discuss this will send representatives to the meeting on wednesday the tenth or in terview him at some time con venient pooch cranmer has always been for a greater lehigh the de sign and construction of conven iences for the students is one of pooch's pet hobbies last year pooch went into the logging bus iness and cut down a lot of trees where the packard laboratory is now under construction in order to furnish some of the fraternity fire-places with wood this good deed of pooch's was thwarted by the university police who main tained a day and night vigil over the wood pile , now pooch has gone into the coppee hall selected for bulletin board a large bulletin board will be erected in front of coppee hall to take place of the main bul letin board formerly located in front of the library the post ing of notices has always been a more or less disturbing factor to the faculty in the late 90's the students took all the chalk from prof w l wilson's black boards and printed or scrawled the announcements on the flag stones and steps of packer hall to announce a college meeting the walk was literally covered with white chalk the frequent college meetings prompted the purchase of a brown and white flag to be raised on the flag pole as an announcement of a college meeting following the usual custom of founder's da y undergraduate awards were announced after the senior degrees and honors had been announced this year an unusual number were honored in this way by their respective departments among those honored were two men who also won athletic awards in their freshman and sophomore years they are julius seligson national tennis champion of new york city and arthur their outstanding achievements in the fields of education and literature dr william mather lewis pres ident of lafayette college and dean christian frederick gauss of princeton university dean gauss was awarded the degree of doctor of humane letters and president lewis that of doctor of laws on his topic founders and foundations president lewis said it would be difficult to find a le high man who would concede that lafayette is as good an institution as his alma mater and i suspect that if a careful canvass of lafay ette were made there would be prac tically unanimity in the opinion that you are sadly lacking in good judgment and we would not have it otherwise he went on to say that this very loyalty family loyal alty is a danger to the peace and happiness of the world no less than the elements of arrogance and pet ty national loyalty is a danger to the peace and happiness of the world no less than the elements of arrogance and petty sectionalism breed hatred and contempt dr lewis that these pleasant re lations will be disturbed dr lewis was born in michigan and educated at the lake forest college from which he received the degree of bachelor of arts a few years later illinois invasion of the pennsylvania military college gridmen tomorrow afternoon in taylor stadium at two thirty al though a spirit of optimism is evi dent in the lehigh camp the men are not over-confident in spite of the fact that accord ing to all football dope p m c should not offer any too great op position to the home team there has been no let down in austy tate's intensive training program and scrimmages have been daily oc currences as usual the men are in splendid physical condition and two of the injured players are back in uniform again both porky flynn who was out with a sprain ed ankle and f stewart who frac tured a collarbone in the early part of the season reported for practice on tuesday austy was well pleased with the showing made by the team last saturday and it is likely that the same line-up with the exception of the ends will start against p m c that started against st john's the two flank men will probably be charley pur vis and frank rushong both of whom played excellent games last week p m c defeated in first game the reports from the chester camp indicate that coach si paux tis has put his p m c gridmen through an intensive training per iod this week in preparation for the big battle here on saturday the showing made by the cadets last week against prospect park club was not very promising the score ending 2-0 in favor of the prospect club fumbles were frequent and the line was slow on their feet but the coaches have been busy rem edying these weaknesses warren p m c.'s left halfback and layler the cadet fullback fea tured the game last saturday war ren the only cadet who was effec tive against the brown and white basketball team last winter proved himself a consistent punter his kicks invariably gaining ground for his team layler lew is president of lafayette and christian f gauss dean of prince ton both of whom received honor ary degrees here wednesday were present as guests the eastern association for the selection of football officials of which walter r okeson of lehigh is commissioner has published a pamphlet to facilitate the study of football rules this booklet edited b yokeson has been sent to all of ficials under the regime of the eastern association the main pur pose of the work is not to give a set of rules but a condensation of all that are used a great deal football has so many laws that the average official would be in a quandry if he attempted to memor ize the entire group thus it is easily seen that ethe plan of study suggested by okey is necessary to give the field bosses some sys tem to enable them to grasp the sit uation more readily commission er okeson carefully reminds those interested that these are not a set of rules but merely a few of the more important ones to such officials as are inter ested how to study the rules okeson accomplishes his purpose by using a few key rules which he believes will help the official to draw a series of mental pictures of the complete set of regulations he does this by paraphrasing each rule in as few words as will give him this mental picture the complete text of okeson's letter preceding the pamphlet is as follows at the five interpretation meet ings this fall i attempted to give the officials a method for studying the rules which i had found to be of help to me it consists in get ting a mental picture of the essen tial part of each rule and this is done by paraphrasing each rule for yourself using just enough words to bring before your mind's eye a picture of the phases of the game which that rule covers as an ex ample i read a digest of the rules which gives to me that series of mental pictures so many men have asked for this digest that we are reproducing it herewith let me warn you that this is not a condensed set of rules nor is it something you can use instead of your rule boo it is merely an exhibit wlji£h may aid you in pre paring youjitdwn digest unless you do prepare it yourself you will prof it nothing my words mean some thing to me they may only con fuse you put the digest in your own words and then you will have something which will conjure up for you the series of pictures you wish to inscribe indelibly on your mind then study your rules care fully noting any of the minor points not covered by your original word irig and add them to the picture finally study your penalties and get them in the picture also you will find that as each game unfolds before you in a series of actual pic tures these will automatically check against your mental pictures and register as either right or wrong if something is wrong you will know the answer walter r okeson commissioner of offcials sept 26 1928 my talk at the meetings also in cluded something of the history of each rule i have not the time ta reproduce this but it will be worth while to acquaint yourself with the history of the rules perhaps i may be able to find time later on to re produce for you an outline of this history annual reception and mrs c r rich ffds will be at home to the faculty rom 8 to 11 p m on tuesday oct 16 the president's reception to he faculty is an annual affair pre-medical society the washington's accounts with the united states during the revolu tionary war and a memorial vol ume containing the technical pa pers of the late prof ariyo imo kuty of japan the facsimile of george wash ington's accounts with the united states during the revolutionary war was presented to the library by miss clara b sayre of beth i lehem who is a niece of the late robert sayre a former trustee of the university this book contains the accounts of all of washington's financial transactions with the gov ernment from june 1775 until june 1783 it also contains a number of curios which though not a part of it are inserted in scrap book fash ion two of these valuable histor ical curios are a piece of red velvet taken from the pew which wash ington and his family used when they attended services in chrjgt church philadelphia and a broad side of a sonata which was sung by children when washington passed under the triumphal arch in tren ■ton new jersey on april 21 1789 letters from bishops and other church dignitaries can also be found in the book another of the curios is a copy of the vicksburg citizen dated july 2 1863 it is printed on the back of figured wall paper and a note at the bottom of the last column announces that this will be the last copy of the paper because grant has captured the city four pieces of paper money which were printed during the rev olutionary war are likewise pasted in the book beside facsimiles of the same pieces this volume will form a very interesting addition to the library's treasure chest the imokuty memorial commit tee of japan has presented to the library a handsome memorial vol ume containing the technical pa pers of the late prof ariya imo kuty and certain papers read by his former pupils this volume makes a distinct addition to the sci entific and technical collection of the library and is a fitting memor ial to a great professor drown hall was far too small f orthe large crowd which attended the annual founder's day dance given by the arcadia last tuesday evening the music was furnished by dave fluharty's ramblers who were popular with the students last year due to the lifting of the cur few rule the freshmen turned out large numbers although the stag line was one of the largest in years there were enough girls present to keep the floor full at all times the arcadia will use the pro ceeds toward sending the band to cambridge for the harvard game prof and mrs carothers and dr and mrs bull chaperoned the af fair recreational business he has con structed a wood slide from the li brary road down the hill parallel to the old library walk lehigh men will remember the difficulty they had in sliding down the li brary walk in icy weather with its old bed of cinders pooch has improved this by constructing the slide with 99 44-100 percent pure ivory lecture committee will hold meeting wednesday afternoon at 4:15 o'clock the lecture committee will hold an open meeting in the committee room to discuss plans formulated last may the scheme proposed at the la meeting was to provide a raei.a for the student societies such 9 the robert blake and other sim ilar clubs to have prominent and interesting speakers to ad dress them if the committee finds that there is a popular appeal for speakers by the members of the societies interested money from the lecture fund will be used to help defray the expenses there fore professor sidney w brown of the committee wishes that every organization that de sires to discuss this will send representatives to the meeting on wednesday the tenth or in terview him at some time con venient pooch cranmer has always been for a greater lehigh the de sign and construction of conven iences for the students is one of pooch's pet hobbies last year pooch went into the logging bus iness and cut down a lot of trees where the packard laboratory is now under construction in order to furnish some of the fraternity fire-places with wood this good deed of pooch's was thwarted by the university police who main tained a day and night vigil over the wood pile , now pooch has gone into the coppee hall selected for bulletin board a large bulletin board will be erected in front of coppee hall to take place of the main bul letin board formerly located in front of the library the post ing of notices has always been a more or less disturbing factor to the faculty in the late 90's the students took all the chalk from prof w l wilson's black boards and printed or scrawled the announcements on the flag stones and steps of packer hall to announce a college meeting the walk was literally covered with white chalk the frequent college meetings prompted the purchase of a brown and white flag to be raised on the flag pole as an announcement of a college meeting following the usual custom of founder's da y undergraduate awards were announced after the senior degrees and honors had been announced this year an unusual number were honored in this way by their was awarded the degree of doctor of humane letters and president lewis that of doctor of laws on his topic founders and foundations president lewis said it would be difficult to find a le high man who would concede that lafayette is as good an institution as his alma mater and i suspect that if a careful canvass of lafay ette were made there would be prac tically unanimity in the opinion that you are sadly lacking in good judgment and we would not have it otherwise he went on to say that this very loyalty family loyal alty is a danger to the peace and happiness of the world no less than the elements of arrogance and pet ty national loyalty is a danger to the peace and happiness of the world no less than the elements of arrogance and petty sectionalism breed hatred and contempt dr lewis
