recent years modern methods min imize labor reynolds and jenness score for lehigh defandorf gets three and silverstein two for visitors the arcadia held a meeting on friday during which several points of interest to the student body were discussed on account of the physical incapacities of sev eral freshmen the privilege of walking on the grass was allowed to these men besides this a peti tion was sent to the faculty re questing that men who are on pro bation be allowed to participate in athletic contests which are held on the home grounds but that they shall not be allowed to make the trips included in this was also a re quest that wednesday afternoon classes be discontinued as in form er years and that athletics be per mitted on that afternoon as well as on saturday the question of reinstating the friday morning eleven to twelve o'clock lecture and college meeting hour was also brought up and by unanimous vote this was included in the petition notice ! owing to the heavy rain last saturday the game with delaware college at newark was canceled this was a disappointment for it took away another chance for le high to come back and even up her score of games lost and won the game with swarthmore on their field next wednesday w r ill undoubtedly be a close contest be tween the two teams this year sw t arthmore has an exceptionally strong team capable of displaying good ball lehigh's team will be virtually the same as that which was to have gone to delaware gardy the assistant manager will take the team to swarthmore either pfeif fer or webb will pitch as johnson is being kept for the game on sat urday with lafayette and if either is in his usual form the team should come through in good shape winterhalter whose playing has been a great advantage to the team will play first base the rest of the team is unchanged and the line-up is the same drama lie club elects new members junior and sophomore cheer leader candidates report on the hand ball court of the gymnasium on saturday at 2 p.m all men will be taught motions at this the first call and will be given a chance to try out at the villanova baseball game wednesday may 28 there are two junior and two sophomore positions vacant fill them by keen competition rutgers winner of track meet at swarthmore middle atlantic championships run off under difficulties the final meeting of the civil engineering society will be held in the physics lecture room thurs day evening may 22nd 1919 this meeting was postponed from may ist on account of the principal speaker being unable to get here as he was in charge of the commit tee to welcome the home-coming soldiers of philadelphia the principal speaker of the evening will be mr george s web ster director of wharves docks and ferries of the city of phila delphia during the past emer gency due to the european war the size and efficiency of the wharves and docks of philadelphia advanced considerably to solve these difficulties a corps of engi neers and thousands of men were put to work this engineering work was almost entirely managed by civil engineers mr wjebster as the director was responsible for miany of the improvements and his ij.liv vv ill >..■v.w)lli'«v ujj ui.i.ug out many points of interest to civil e liigineering students a student paper on the lincoln memorial and its foundations will be given by r f johnson 19 the problem of building a suitable memorial to lincoln had been often discussed until several years ago the present plans were approved and work began this building shows a phase of engineering closely connected with the fine arts the memorial is a temple of pure greek design of great simplicity and beauty it surmounts a series of terraces placed in potomac park in washington the building is of heavy construtcion and required unusually firm foundations john son will discuss the building from the standpoint of civil engineering the officers for the ensuing year will be elected at this meeting everybody is invited racquet men to meet moravians wednesday on saturday may 17 a college meeting was held to discuss the r o t c and the enforcement of the honor system president drinker was the first speaker he announced that as yet the faculty has taken no definite action on this subject for the war department is still holding the matter under con sideration no definite action will be taken until the university hears from the war department when it is decided by the faculty it will be communicated at once to the students dr drinker also said that the university will be given a half holiday on the day of the welcome home parade and he hoped that the men would partici pate in it president bevier of the senior class then made some comments on the r o t c in which he ex pressed the general viewpoint of the student-body concerning it to this he added a warning to all men that the violation of the honor system must stop of late a num ber of cases have been known to oc cur but no serious punishment has been given the honor system is one of the institutions of which le high is proud it was adopted by the unanimous action of the stu dent-body a number of years ago the violations have in the past been few and far between and only seldom has serious punishment been given the system however will not work unless it is supported by every man the continuance of its violation will cause it to be re moved along with such privileges as allowing men to leave examina tion rooms at their will these privileges are of great convenience to men when they are taking long examinations and their removal would be a continual source of dis comfort it is the duty of every lehigh man to back the honor system not only by observing it himself but by reporting violations that come to his attention if this is done the system will run smotoh ly and will be of great convenience to the student body strict rulings will be observed im the future and the next man who is caught will be dismissed from th e university th e honor system is an institution by the students and demands the stu dents support on thursday evening the mus tard and cheese club held a bus iness meeting in drow m later date junior banquet friday rain no frosh game cabinet organized the same rainy weather con ditions that we had here saurday also prevailed at rutgers and consequently the brown and white recquet men were unable to bring back a victory lehigh's tennis schedule has been somewhat broken up due to bad weather conditions this making the third consecutive match which has had to be called off next wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock the moravian tennis team will play off their pastponedi match on the university courts one of the most interesting and exciting lacrosse games staged at lehigh for some time was played here last saturday on taylor field when the john hopkins squad defeated the brown and white squad only after a well con tested game this game decided the championship for this year as hopkins w r as undefeated and le high lost only to navy the rain at noon made the field very wet and slippery and in the first few minutes of play the men had difficulty in getting a foothold the brown and white squad had suffered the loss of parker at goal who had his nose broken in scrim mage the day before this made changes necessary and mitman who up to this time had held down the position of out-home was sent back to take parker's place david son took mitman s place and jen ness and gilman exchanged places making the line-up almost like a new team the game started with everyone at top-notch form and it looked as if lehigh had the advantage for a short time the ball was carried from one end of the field to the other until reynolds managed to break through the hopkins defense and score the first goal of the game for lehigh the ball was put into play again and this time hopkins tried for a goal but missed by a wild throw wey obtained the ball and showed his skill in dodging by carrying it all the way up the field within shooting distance but failed to register a goal five minutes later hopkins registered their first goal when silverstein scored mit man although quick and clever with the stick could not keep the hopkins attack from registering some goals from the great number of attempts at close quarters two minutes later stewart of hopkins after several shots managed to shove the ball in the goal from just outside the crease for same time the game continu ed without either side being able to score until jenness after some clever passing and dodging was able to register lehigh's second goal thus tieing the score hop kins tried again to get the lead but the shot was intercepted by enslin who carried the ball out of danger and passed to jenness jen ness tried for another goal but was intercepted and hopkins got the ball down the field again after another short tussle defandorf who was substituting for stewart rolled in their third goal just be fore the whistle blew for the end of the first half this left the score 3 to 2 in favor of the visitors continued on third page with the ball in play the second half bidded to become a hard struggle and for ten minutes neither side was able to score until defandorf hopkins slid through the brown and white defense and registered hopkins fourth goal and gave them a two point lead reyn olds then carried the ball up the friday may 23rd at 7:30 p.m the junior class will banquet at kurtz's restaurant dr drinker prof h r bosey reiter r w okeson and m b tate 20 will be the speakers of the evening as the banquet promises to be the best in the history of the class it is hoped that all members will try to be present the tickets cost 3.75 and may be procured from the following men : j m coleman e l forstall r h grubbs f a hall w j knerr and j b stewart despite torrents of rain which placed several portions of the track under fully six inches of water the middle states track and field championships were held at swarthmore on saturday the runners splashed through the pud dles on the heavy track each time the shot was put also considerable energy had to be exerted to dig it out the strong rutgers team won the meet with 48 points swarth more came second with 33 points followed by lafayette with 31 5-6 the other teams finished as fol lows : muhlenberg 10 ; stevens 8 1-3 ; delaware 8 1-3 ; n y u 7 ; gettysburg 4 1-5 and w & j 3 due to a misunderstanding about half of lehigh's team in cluding some of the sure point win ners did not arrive until after the semi-finals and consequently were not permitted into the finals le high got one point carr coming in fourth in the two-mile findley of new york univer sity took the quarter mile in 53 seconds chandler of swarthmore was first in the shotput while pratt of rutgers was a winner in the discus throw summaries : 100-yard dash — won by dewitt rutgers second klauder swarth more ; third kunkle lafayette ; fourth carter swarthmore time continued on third page the mechanical engineering so ciety held its final meeting of the year last thursday evening in the physics building the speaker of the evening was j e little 94 who gave a talk on the handling of ore mr little had many lan tern slides with which he illus trated his talk and showed the various phases of the subject which he described previous to the lecture the regu lar 1 business meeting of the society was held and officers were elected for next year the elections were as follows president j g berg doll secretary ij l greiger treasurer r c weishaupt li brarian w a carr commencing his talk mr little expressed the opinio'ui that the me chanical engineer was coming to the front more and more among men of the engineering professions mechanical engineers developed the lake superior ore district and it is the development of this dis trict which has made the success of the big steel companies possible furthermore modern steel com panies are themselves the work of mechanical engineers in the early days of the steel business the first ore was shipped from lake superior to pittsburgh at a cost of 200 a ton in 1914 the cost per ton amounted to 2.50 this great reduction was brought about solely through improved methods of handling and improve ment in railroading figures for 1916 show that 66 000,0()0 tons of ore were shipped from this lake superior district alone this figure is remarkable when it is considered that the boats are limited in size to 10,000 tons because of the soo locks and also the fact that in winter the ice makes shipping impossible unloading was probably the ele ment which contributed the most to the high cost of shipping in the early days 1 . the first improvement over ordinary hand labor was the development of a cable w t ay system then followed in rapid succession the grab bucket and jib crane and then the conveyor crane since the use of these there has been no radi cal change in the system but the size of the installations has in creased enormously and there have been numerous minor improve ments wooden docks for loading were first tried but these have been al most entirely replaced by rein forced concrete docks the ore is dumped into chutes on the docks and from there the boats are loaded in a few hours mr little then showed pictures of the modern unloading ma chinery and loading docks these were followed by views of the iron mines of cuba and the methods of loading the ore boats the baseball pame scheduled for last saturday between the fresh men and wyoming seminary was cancelled at the last minute due to the extremely heavy rain ar rangements are being made for a game for this saturday the team is now in the pink of condition and looks forward to bringing home the bacon from the remainder of the games to be played this season s c.mawbey manager will consider any chal lenge from a section or fraternity team for games to be played dur ing the week on monday evening the newly
