class of 1921 banquets varsity shuts out villanova price five cents seventy=five second year men compose best attended banquet so far frosh twirlers win from high school boys constitution for interfrat council vol xxvi no 48 tuesday's game results in 6=5 score remainder of season outlined is last of intercollegiate lacrosse games and decides second place game postponed on account of rain to start 4:15 rain checks of may 24 good for any game first game in three weeks shows lehigh nine to be much improved purposes of the council outlined university's welfare included semi-monthly meetings score 9-0 clause prohibits discussion or action on rushing before april 1920 tuesday was a banner day for the freshman baseball team when they resumed their playing sched ule by trimming the south side high school boys the freshmen played superior ball throughout the game and would have had it put on ice in the fourth had not pfeiffer dropped a deep drive to center by schraeder in the sixth with the bases full coffin desch van billiard and schraeder scor continued on third page ing desch brought in the other run in the fourth inning after knocking a clean three-bagger to left field and coming in on kresge s single the high school boys re ceived but one clean hit from toll in in three innings and four from boltz in four innings the third inning proved the undoing of the packer avenue team when parker started off with a clean single and was brought home on tollin's long triple to center tollin was brought in on a double by kozy who in turn completed the circuit on a double by lerch carey seemed to be under the spell of a jinx fanning out three times in succession but his clever work in the field made up for this loss m and c banquet the last lacrosse game of the season will be played on taylor field saturday afternoon may 31 at 3 00 p.m when the brown and white squad meets the red and blue lacrosse team from the uni versity of pennsylvania this is the last of the intercollegiate games and decides who will hold second place lehigh having lost her place in the championship race when she lost to hopkins two weeks ago in a well contested match on a very muddy field with all the odds against her this should be a mighty interest ing game with the odds with us only by inches and with the hard playing w r hich always accompanys the red and blue teams we should see some of the playing which we all hoped to see in the hopkins game perm has been beaten both by hopkins and swarthmore w r e lost to hopkins and won from swarthmore only by a very small margin perm also giving them a hard game coach hunter has been drilling the men ever since the hopkins game and jermess and davidson are showing good form in their new positions at attack mitman is still holding down the position at goal as parker has not been able to come out since breaking his nose in practice before the hopkins game gilman is holding jenness place at 3rd defense the line-up will be as follows mitman goal wilson point straub cover point enslin ist defense wey 2nd defense gil man 3rd defense haussmann center lauder ist attack rey nolds 2nd attack nesselbush 3rd attack jenness captain out home davidson in-home the mustard and cheese club will hold its annual banquet at the kurtz restaurant on wednesday june 4 at 7 o0 p.m the subscrip tion is 2.50 and it is very urgent that all those intending to go notify the committee immediately or at the latest by monday noon those on the committee are : e w estes g l childs and j r farrington tennis with penn all around test planned the second step towards the or ganization of an interfraternity council at lehigh w t as taken last wednesday night at a meeting in drown hall attended by the dele gates from the different fratern ities at the meeting a constitution was presented which had been drawn up by a committee elected at the previous meeting consisting of j m howard r honeyman r bellman m tate and j j shipherd chairman and the vari ous articles discussed and changed to meet the d'-mands of the dele gates the purpose of the council as stated in the present constitution is fourfold 1 to promote a more intimate friendship between the fraternities and the student body generally 2 to develop a closer relationship among the fraternities at lehigh by means of interfra ternity athletics and social affairs 3 to lend a wider support to all jtniversity activities and 4 to promote the welfare of the uni versity in general the meetings of the council are according to the proposed constitu tion to be held every second mon day in the college year in drown hall and each fraternity is entitled to one delegate and one alternate in regards to the question of a rushing agreement the constitu tion contains a clause which pro hibits the discussion or action con cerning rushing in any form before april 1 1920 except by the unani mous consent of all members of the council copies of the present proposed constitution will be sent to all fraternities at lehigh to be ratified by them in order that the perman ent council may be organized be fore the close of the present col lege year electricals on trip the annual banquet of the class of 1921 was held last wednesday night at the allen hotel allen town about seventy-five of the second year men participated in tlie festivities this gathering is pronounced by far the most suc cessful banquet this year from the standpoint of attendance and pep the dinner was served in the lower grill of the allen and the menu was replete with everything in the way of food that dis tinguishes a banquet from an or dinary meal a very useful little article was given as a favor a com bination bill fold and cigarette case mr archibald johnston mayor of bethlehem was listed as one of the speakers but owing to business matters was detained in new york however four entertaining and instructive men dr drinker prof reiter mr j e gheen secretary of the bethlehem chamber of commerce and president bevier of the senior class delivered speeches dr drinker as first speaker of the evening told the sophomores of lehigh when he was in college at that time christmas kaii served as chapel recitation rooms and dormitory the president then went on to speak of the rather dif ficult year that had just passed and congradulated the men on the ad mirable manner in which they went through it the doctor closed his speech by wishing the 1921 men all luck as upper classmen and he expressed his opinion that from their previous training and con duct they would be good ones prof bosey reiter as usual tried to impress the gathering with the need of good physical educa tion and the advantages of asso ciations with other men to make an all-round liberal education kipling and other fight poets for whom he is the lehigh valley exponent were duly referred to and even the waiters suspended their duties in order that they could follow his train of thought mr bevier addressed the crowd on the waining spirit of lehigh and the need for cooperation and team work in the studuent body as well as the teams in order to de feat our rival lafayette or any other team for that matter he also gave a brief of a man s college career and laid emphasis on the fact that the sophomore class was in a transitory period and would soon emerge as upper classmen and that this should be borne in mind that they might conduct themselves as such the last speaker of the evening was mr gheen this man has had many experiences holding various positions that bring him before the people his supply of good rumor never seemed to end and in fact continued on fourth page the lehigh courtmen will meet those of the u of p in a tennis match saturday afternoon on the varsity courts the match will be run off while the lacrosse teams of the same institutions meet on taylor field the last time the brown and white team played was with la fayette but a heavy rain prevented the completion of the match up to the time play stopped lehigh was playing a wonderful brand of tennis which if repeated tomorrow should enable them to easily handle the philadelphia collegians practice has been going on every afternoon and a deffinite team has not as yet been picked but un doubtedly the brown and white will be represented by estes hall wilson and mercur an all around efficiency test with the idea of thoroughly developing the students is a plan arranged by assistant director bartlett which will be submitted to the athletic committee for their approval this novel plan should meet with immediate favor and will no doubt furnish excellent competition among a large class of students continued on fourth page director bartlett believes that an all around athletic development is to be desired and that there are certain things every man should be trained in with this in view he desires to give a test which can be taken by any man and if lie passes it he will be awarded a small l or other insignia or medal which shall show his merit by such a test which it is supposed can be passed by a man after three years of training for it under instruc tion a large class of men in the university who have no ability in any one sport will be attracted and a standard 1 of physique at le high will be raised to an indefi nitely higher by the awarding of a small l the merit of the man passing his test will be shown and this will be an added stimulus to draw candidates for the test the senior and junior electric al engineers accompanied by the faculty of the electrical engineer ing department made a trip to easton on wednesday to the plant of the pennsylvania utilities com pany this company supplies the dis trict of easton nazareth dela ware water gap and a few towns in new jersey with electric p«wer a miniature of the entire system was shown in the office of the com pany it showed the location of the principal generators sub-sta tions and consumers the main feature of their system is the auto matic switching of overhead relays by which any section that is short circuited is automatically discon nected without interference to the other lines afterwards an inspection was made of the ferry street sub-sta tion and the dock street generator plant savaria and winterhalter heav iest scorers for brown and white lohnson pitches tn the first game that the lehigh nine has played for over three weeks a shut-out was scored 1 over the fast villanova diamond artists with a good hot sunshiny day to back the already high spirits of the nine there was nothing in the world to stop them from winning johnson was back to his old form and sent man after maiii to the bench after three successive strikes the fielding work was particularly good and mathag and coffin show ed up well in this branch to both of these men may be accredited the honor of maintaining a zero on the visitor's tally sheet inning after inning the visitors retired without a run and generally with out a hit at the same time the brown and white batters were finding the ball for bases and in many cases for runs on an aver age one run per inning was the score made by the lehigh batters villanova s pitcher played a good game and with better support from the field might have held the brown and white to a few tallies he was not very well seconded in his efforts however and the result was a nine to nothing score for le high the game opened in the first in ning with the strike out of the vil lanova men savaria then advanc ed to bat for lehigh and knocked out the first hit of the game he was left ! on second after two strike outs murray popped out a little fly to mathag in the second and the other men failed to connect with the ball coffin came up for le high and soaked a safe fly to right field herrington then sacrificed to coffin and a few minutes later coffin scored on an overthrow from johnson's fly to center savaria then hit to left field and was out villanova opened up well in the third with a hot liner which how ever w t as recovered by johnson savaria then caught cronin's grounder while jones fouled to webb maginnes hit a safe single to right field and mathag walked webb popped a fly to pitcher and maginnes tried to steal home but was caught at the plate herring ton singled but mathag was put out at third in the fourth there was a chance that villanova might score robison grounded a hot one to right and stole second but was caught between savaria coffin and johnson while trying to steal third mcandrews singled and stole second mcgeehan then popped another fly to johnson and coffin caught mcandrews at second le high came to bat and retired in one two three order continued on third page murray opened the fifth with a safe hit to center hertzler follow ed with a grounder to webb and mcdermoth sacrificed smith then knocked a fly to savaria and cron in followed with one to maginnes lehigh now followed with savaria the first game in the annual series of three games between the lehigh and perm it should be in better shape to meet the club from down the river than it was last saturday when not a game had been played for three weeks the combination of a losing streak and bad weather both appear to have been broken and the outlook is good for the home team to come away with the large end of the score whs showing of the team in the villanova game was as good as it has been so far this season every man hit the ball hard and there were few strike-outs winterhalt er who returned to college recent ly showed up well in his first game this season he was a member of the team two years ago which won three straight from lafayette the other two members of the out field mathag and maginness have been playing a steady game be sides these three star outfield men tom keady has beck who was playing as a regular until he in jured his ankle but who is now in good shape again the line-up for tuesday's game will probably be the same as in the past two games johnson will un doubtedly be keady's selection for pitcher the lafayette team presents the same line-up as that which expect ed to play on the scheduled day the team is handicapped by the absence of anderson who has been out for several weeks with a broken ankle the rest of the team is in good shape martin who was in jured in the west point game is back in the line-up at second base his former position short stop be ing filled by bieber who was put in as a substitute when martin was hurt and has since retained the plafce moyer lafayette's star pitcher who twirled the no-hit no run game against syracuse will probably be the pitcher tuesday afternoon chilson has been show ing up well at first base the game will be called at 4:15 bain checks given out on saturday may 24 are good tuesday after noon or for any other
