on the subject some prin ciples of mental hygiene the lecture was attended chiefly by the freshmen who were required to attend but some of the upperclass men were also present to hear prof hughes the address served to complete the subject introduced by prof hughes in his lecture of last fri day on mental adjustments on entering college and the two lectures taken together served to give the members of the incoming class a clear idea of the manner in which they must solve the mental problems which will confront them throughout their college course in his address this morning prof hughes said in part : it is only in recent times that even bodily diseases have been clearly defined and systematically named who can minister to a mind diseased says the poet we now have hospitals for the insane in which physicians deal with the sick in mind with the same patience and eagerness to learn as do the physicians of the body and the time has long gone by when educat ed men ridicule the insane or the feeble minded this study of the insane helps us to understand the mental ail ments of the normal man for we all have them the insane in one respect differ from the normal man only in the degree for the alienist frequently notes that the mental affliction of his patient is but the exaggeration of what he sees in himself and in his friends but in another respect it is a difference of kind and not of degree for the insane can not recognize or take steps to correct the disease except through the aid of another the man who says i must have been crazy when i did that of course proves by his remark that he is not and was not crazy it is not the disease which marks one as insane but the loss or absence of the intel ligence which can recognize and control the disease the willful man keeps to a cer tain form or type of action because he has initiated it and any resis tance thereto provokes at once an attempt on his part to repeat and enhance his performance the stere otypy of the willful the extreme sense of sin felt by john bunyan augustine or count tolstoi was for the same reason not insanity but in the depressed type of insan ity we see the same intense dread and doubt what to do or where to look the manic type of insanity serves to picture the essential char acter of that impatience and excit ability which marks so may people that are said to have tempera ment while the hebephrenic type of the insane with its character istic silliness and aimilessness points out the goal toward which travels the bark of the slack and flabby in dividual in so far as he indulges
