state presents strong eleven severe workouts coupled with return of veterans has strengthened team evenly matched lehigh however lacks the service of several veterans lehigh will meet the strong perm state team tomorrow on taylor field in the first big home game of the season the contest will be keenly fought and a very close struggle should ensue neither team will be in top-notch shape as the early season games for both teams have played havoc with the squads both the brown and white and the up-state eleven have men out of the game with in juries both teams are anxious for a victory because in the last two years each team has won a game in 1914 lehigh won the result be ing 20-7 ; while last year perm state won 7-0 ' perm state's record is no mean one andi lehigh will have to show a lot of pep to come out on the long end of the score the state team has rolled up a grand total of 398 points to her opponents 25 they have lost only one game and that to pennsylvania this shows that the team has a powerful scor ing factor in it we shall see how strong it is however tomorrow when it runs up against the won derful defense of the lehigh team tom keady the lehigh mentor has had his troubles this week the muhlenberg game was disastrous in so far that it disabled several play ers who will not be able to resume their places by tomorrow added to this good the veteran tackle on the team was suddenly called home and it is doubtful whether he will be back tomorrow the team has been going good all week and ought io show up at its best tom keady will not be able to use halsted mac donald or aa 7 ysoeki in the game but he intends to win the struggle and is not going to save any men coach harlow has been giving his pupils severe workouts all week he too has been severely handi capped in developing his team as he has had to continually shift his line-up all the season higgens ege and captain clark all got back into logs this week and have great ly strengthened the team ewing has been playing quarter and the signals have been going off without a hitch without doubt the game will be a tight to the finish and will be a fit ting ending to the dedication of the new stadium cheering section seats it is probable that the cheering section seats for the lafayette-le high game will be on sale next wednesday november 15 at 1.30 p.m at the gymnasium entrance m.e and bus ad trip about thirty members of the in dustrial management class for senior m.e and b.s bus made ?, trip of inspection through the gal lia silk co of south bethlehem last wednesday afternoon the men went through the entire mill and were enabled to trace the pro cess of cloth making from the time the silk is received in skeins until the finished product is produced ready for shipment discussion groups begin for year enthusiasm for service is theme of speakers at initial meeting the first series of the wednesday evening discussion group meetings was observed on november 8 in the various fraternity houses dormi tory sections leonard hall and drown hall the different leaders according to a pre-arranged schedule of dis cussion subjects presented in the various groups to which they were assigned the material dealing with the subject enthusiasm for ser ! vice the leaders cited as an example of the text the case of a young englishman arthur jackson by name who after graduation from a medical school devoted his life to the helping of others serving in the capacity of a medical missionary in northern china until his death at the early age of twenty-six young jackson was always a leader among his fellows and was distinguished by his self-sacrificing tendencies as well as by his superi : ority as a man jackson was a hard and consistent student a well rounded athlete of considerable prowess and a man of firm religi ous convictions he was an all roundl man he fairly bubbled over with enthusiasm not the boister ous type but the kind that aims to help one's fellowmen in his work in china he was tire less he devoted his body and soul to the furthering of true christi anity and to the bettering of the living conditions of the people with whom he was associated during the prevalence of the plague and in the course of his efforts to assist in its suppression jackson was stricken with the fatal disease and died a martyr to the cause of helping your fellowman your brother his life is a lesson to the college student as well as to any normal young man : be an all-round man ; deveilop a strong character a trained and a willing mind and a healthy body and he enthusiastic for service be a big brother to somebody ! lively and interesting discus sions on the general topic by the various groups brought forth many helpful and practical thoughts re lating to enthusiastic service camp tohicken reunion a delegation of men from the student body will attend the annual reunion of camp tohickon to be held this week in philadelphia at the central branch of the y m c a lehigh s activity in summer camp lines is a growing one and each summer finds a few more of each summer finds a few more as sociation men acting ts leaders in structors or managers in the camps held in different sections of the country chapel attendance the attendance of students at chapel exercises and college lectures from october 5 to 31 is now r posted on the main bulletin board in pack er hall all corrections must be reported at the office of the register within ten days or these records will stand chapel and college lecture at tendance is counted in the general average of each student a grade of a in chapel is obtainable by be ing present at sixty per cent of the services . ■•,- seminar in coppee hall collection of works and studies of liberal nature include references of sciences accessible to students books for use every day but they must not be removed students interested in studies of a liberal nature will find in the seminar located on the third floor of coppee hall a collection of ex cellent reference books the refer ences cover the fields of latin and german literature psychology education philosophy and re ligion these volumes purchases of the language philosophical and educational departments sup plemented by contributions from the private libraries of professors and instructors in these depart ments made possible this oppor tunity for research work among the works of men who stand fore most in their various provinces the delphin classics comprise one hundred and fifty volumes of latin writings by the men famous in latin literature among them can be found the works of tacitus virgil terence plautus pliny ovid livy juvenal cicero mar tial cassar and lucretius in the collec+ion of german books the works of goethe and schiller find a prominent place lessing meyer keller heine storm raabe baker eggert hauptmann kleist franssen and hoffman all famous names in ger man literature are represented some by the complete sets of their works others by their best books and short stories a set of the well known " konversations lexikon " by brockhaus has been added the philology of german its syntax and grammar are explained in numerous philological books gram mars and dictionaries excellent english histories of german literature written by men such as robertson of colum bia coar of the university of strassburg and francke of har vard assist in a better appreciation of the various authors and their works the life of goethe is ad mirably handled in a two-volume german treatise by biebschowsky while minor is almost equally suc cessful in his handling of schiller and his works a clear understanding of what the drama is is given in brander matthews exposition entitled a study of the drama a small volume entitled the philosophy of the short-story by the same author and a famous book is also ! a part of the collection psychology in its elementary as pects psychological theory and its practical applications form im portant features of the collection the books of thorndike of colum bia ; matteson who will be the principal . speaker can arrange to be here at i that time the subject of the ad dress will be methods of oil pros ■pecting " watch bulletin boards for further notice y.m.c.a school big enrollment nearly one hundred fifty men wednesday signified intention of attending teachers needed to date thirty students have volunteered but corps is too small the prospects of the free even ing school conducted by the le high y m c a are very encour aging on wednesday evening the enrollment was the heaviest on record 147 men signifying their desire to attend the 147 men tioned do not include any of the 575 greeks and ruthanians en rolled to date but embrace about twenty other nationalities includ ing the italian portuguese french hungarian lettish rus sian slavish east indian spanish cuban and porto rican besides the classes for men there is also a class for young ladies being con ducted the free evening school is con ducted by the lehigh university y m c a with the cooperation of the bethlehem steel works the teachers are all lehigh uni versity men and are members of all four classes although the majority are upper classmen at present iisi&d are 30 men on the teaching staff and many more are needed mr frey secretary of the y m c a acts in the capacity of prin cipal the subjects taught are of an elementary nature and include english reading waiting ele ments of conversation and in the more advanced classes history and geography the school tries to meet the needs of the individual students and where the needs are so many and diversified the task is difficult some of the men on the roll can't speak a word of english in which case interpreters are em ployed where available other foreigners are able to speak the english language somewhat — in which case attention is paid to reading and writing the work being done by lehigh men in the evening school is worthy of real commendation it is altruistic and of great civic value tending to make good ameri can citizens out of the large foreign population besides being of value to the persons taught the work done with the foreign population makes big returns to the college student acting in the captcity of teacher he learns to know inti mately men of the laboring class and his familiarity with the ways of christian work as it is situated tremely handy in his profession of i engineering lehigh university has big opportunities in this field of christian work being situated so close to a number of foreign colonies and is so for as known the only university taking active interest in work of this nature mechanical meet the second monthly meeting of the mechanical engineering so ciety will be held thursday even ing november 16 at eight o'clock in williams hall the chief speaker will be prof j w rich ards head of the department of metallurgy who will speak on the naval advisory board g k bishop 17 will present a paper the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pa friday november 10 1916 vol xxiv no 10
