board the senior class held a short business meeting last saturday noon in front of packer hall the purpose of the meeting was to fill the positions of class secretary and athletic representative the election resulted in e a clare being chosen secretary and h s carlson athletic representa tive an extension of time was given in which to pay class dues all dues must however be paid on or before april 1.9 notice sophomore ! the rt rev thomas j shahan d.d rector of the catholic uni versity of america has become a member of the advisory board of university presidents on the sum mer military training camps for university and college students and other citizens wiiich are to be held this summer the committee now consists of presidents of prince ton harvard yale the university of the state of new york the uni versities of michigan alabama california illinois cornell and vanderbilt ayilliams college the stevens institute of technology the catholic university of america lehigh university and the virginia military institute college lecture out of the seven candidates who reported for assistant manager of track three have dropped out be cause of other work more men are needed so if any wish to try for the position they are to report to butter-worth at the gymnasium on wednesday at four o'clock miners meet an illustrated lecture on ' ' camp life of a geologist in the rocky mountains will be given in the university chapel on friday morn ing april 7 at 11 o'clock by mr w t lee of the united states geological survey attendance of the students is required a meeting of the mining and geological society is scheduled to take place thursday evening april 13 in williams hall prof moore of pennsylvania state college will speak on ' ' the mining situation in india and australia g s bor den 17 will speak on the situa tion at grass valley california and ely nevada a business meeting will be held at this time when the officers for next year will be elected chemists meet professor franklin returned from florida last week to start on a lecture tour throughout the west while in the southland he visited the leading institutions and did some work as well as play he was in florida for two months in an interview with the brown and white staff man he described his vacation as an unbroken suc cession of beautiful temperate days his relation of experiences while there indicate that he did little resting he roamed ex plored fished hunted and while he did not discover a whiskered bird he discovered one of the finest of swimming pools in the course of his wanderings he met professor william b schober former head of the chem istry department who is now lo cated in cocoanut grove below miami where he is engaged in raising grape fruit speaking of his experiences he said that he hunted up a swimming pool the first thing and found the best ever to be the blue spring a pool in the jungle near the st johns river two miles from town where 140,000,000 gallons of crystal clear 73 f salty sulphur water boils out of the ground every twenty-four hours he talked to his orange city neighbors so much about the condition of the pool that a clean up picnic was organized fifteen strong including three negro helpers and two mules and they cleaned out that spring they did ! negro ben got into the water once all over with his clothes on ; but our benny being the only water rat in the party was in the water for four hours in two ' ' heats ' ' diving and roping sunken logs and snags ; and he cooked a big chowder for the bunch after a recipe of his uncle's in kansas and it was fine and that same even ing he says he attended a card party with the orange city folks feeling only pleasantly tired when he first rowed up the stream from the st johns river to the blue spring pool he was wildly excited over the great numbers of fish to be seen in the clear water and only a few days ago he bor rowed about thirty feet of chicken fence and persuaded a neighbor to go with him they tied a brail to each end of the fence but his friend wouldn't go into the water so all that benny could do w t as to let his friend stand on shore holding one end of the seine while he swung out and around with his end — and scared the fish he couldn't catch since leaving lehigh he has _ in addition to his numerous activities been doing much writing in co operation with professor macnutt he has almost completed a single continued on second page professor franklin has planned a visiting and lecturing tour of the western states which starts this week he will spend one week at the university of illinois where he is to deliver eight lectures three days will be spent at the state uni versities of lowa nebraska south dakota missouri and kansas continued on second page the first speaker called upon was dr 11 . s drinker he said that he had come to lehigh to be near the student body and ; that he would always be glad to be of service to anyone he reviewed the part taken by our own university in questions of an extra mural nature lehigh is recognized as leader in the student summer camp move ment now allied with the camps for the business men this move ment is growing stronger year by year and is the only method by which a federal army can be raised and trained president drinker then called attention to the inner conditions of the university and especially the honor system he keep the class in good spirits throughout the entire evening president p s haiiway as toast master of the occasion read a tele gram from r c good former president of the class the favors of the evening were neat card and bill cases of gray leather which contained the menu and list of speeches an excellent menu and snappy talks served to the class of 1917 held its third annual banquet last friday even ing in the hotel allen allentown the affair was marked by the inter esting and amusing talks given by the speakers of the occasion as well as by the spirit and enthusiasm of the eighty-four members of the class present before the largest soccer audi ence in its history and in the final game of the season the brown and white soccer team went down to defeat before the university of pennsylvania aggregation by the score of four goals to none this victory gave pennsylvania the championship of the new pennsyl vania college soccer league and was the deciding factor in the triple tie which had hung over since last december in addition to the title perm was also awarded the 100 trophy cup put up by douglas stewart and morris john son of philadelphia and major b desaulles and h e lewis of bethlehem to capture the flag perm sent up practically her varsity team which finished second in the inter collegiate league last december the contest was snappy from whistle to whistle but the clever toe artists of the red and blue had odds which lehigh could not over come perm's forward line worked finely and her defense was almost impregnable lehigh worked hard against her great odds and showed occasional good spurts only three times was she successful in storm ing her opponents defense but at each opportunity lacked the punch to produce results three-fourths of the playing was done in brown and white territory and had it not been for the fine defensive work of shock ley coffin and lees the score would have been much higher these men did yeoman work and their aid together with half a dozen wonderful saves by rau the elon gated brown and white goal kept the score down the weather was ideal with no wind of any account the field was in good shape in marked con trast to its condition two weeks ago in the game with lafayette when the game was played on a snow and ice-covered field and toward the end in the face of a driving damp snow perm opened with a rush and got the jump on her opponents then followed a series of vicious attacks with gains through the brown and white defense before there was time for recovery baron got the ball and with no one to stop him drove a wicked one past rau shortly after webster broke through in a scrimmage and stretched the net again for perm's second goal lehigh s backs now recovered their form took a brace and got into the fray with greater determination with the result that the philadelphians were kept busy in their own territory the rest of the half the second half progressed some time before the red and blue players scored their third goal in a scrimmage to one side of the net clothier with a strong drive and from a hard angle booted the ball into the netting taking rau by surprise continued on fifth page the goal by baron in this half which proved the final one was still more spectacular being shot from a distance of thirty yards the monthly meeting 1 of the chemical society will be held at eight o'clock thursday evening april the sixth in saucon hall the speakers will be w it koch and l g mudge west point chapla n to speak members are asked to note that the next meeting of st paul's so ciety scheduled on the 1 program for thursday april 13 is changed to monday april 17 this change has been made in order to accom modate the speaker the rev h p silver chaplain of the united states military academy at west point who will be making the noon-day addresses at the garrick theatre philadelphia during holy week the usual notices will be printed and posted defacto government financiers should aid since u s recognized mexico coach keady has kept the squad in motion every minute and the game tomorrow is expected to be the first of a successful season the game tomorrow will open the baseball season for both nines and consequently little can be deter mined by strength comparisons even the lehigh line-up due to lack of real practice is only a prob able one the infield will be chosen fr le following candidates : qi phenoweth fishburn wynne yap and achorn lees will probably catch and the pitcher's box will be filled by either twombly or rawle the outfield positions will possibly be chosen from tw^ombly maginnes connell buxton and winterhalter with albright college at 3 p m on taylor field the first scheduled game was to have been played last saturday with new york university but because of the poor condition of the field the game was cancelled however the team has been practicing almost a week on the lower field and the grounds have improved to such an extent that the game tomorrow is a cer tainty there was some discussion as to the location of the new dia mond inasmuch as the regular field is at present covered with the con structing of the new stands it has been decided finally to erect a tem porary diamond at the northwest corner of the football field the first baseball game of the season will be plavecl tomorrow an interesting and instructive lecture was given in packer me morial chapel last friday morning by prof leo s rowe of the uni versity of pennsylvania prof rowe occupies the chair of politi cal science at that institution dr drinker in his introduction spoke of the speaker's remarkable career as an educator and also as a diplomat prof rowe said in part : :': ' the international problems which face the present administra tion are very weighty ones unless we assume higher standards re garding these affairs we have failed in our attempt in making interna tional law binding we deserve to disappear the idea that the united states is esteemed by all countries is erroneous no one wants to see us advance unless we contribute our part to the world at large the national thought of our people cannot keep pace with the matters of today we were the iso lated power of the nineteenth cen tury and not until we change from this mistaken idea can we expect to go ahead what has this to do with the mexican situation we deal with this question in terms of certain personalities such as diaz carran za huerta villa etc instead of analyzing the conditions which ex ist there ' ' let us look a little into the his tory of mexico from 1810 to 1879 when diaz came into power the country was upset with civil strife and anarchy our country during this time forged ahead building up the great country we have while poor mexico remained stag nant political revolutions were to blame for this long period of strife which naturally prevented the de velopment of the national resources and government in 1857 a very poor constitu tion was adopted the country was not adapted for a constitution of this kind and matters were still unsettled there is only one way to overcome this strife and that is to set up a unified central govern ment to curb any uprisings diaz has been severely criti cised for his political policy he disregarded the constitution of 1857 and took for his cardinal prin ciple the thought that mexico needed development of her national resources the minds of the people were turned to this need let us look at the people of mexico they are essentially an in dian nation not less than ninety per cent have indian blood in their veins the foreign element is very small numbering only about 57 000 as compared with a total popu lation of sixteen million between 1880 and 1910 diaz who had a deep sympathy for the mass of peo ple did much for the uplift of the ignorant but he fell into a big error a few were becoming very wealthy while most of his people were existing in poverty the
