track practice soon to be in full sway varsity to meet vermont in opener vol xxvii no 44 maryland club gives smoker penn state wins championship price flve cents members observe founder's day dr emery delivers address constant attention and good weather has put track in shape muhlenberg meet april 17 first round games bring forth several hard=fought tussles eminent educator and author presents to faculty and students a vivid picture of palestine burlington collegians on way home from successful southern trip last year's title holders again out run field lehigh ties for fourth lehigh nine ready bob good champion last few days of outdoor practice has whipped lehigh team in shape lehigh's 175 pounder outclasses all opponents and takes final with fall for the past week considerable work has been done on the upper field in view of getting track prac tice under way the board track has been removed and the cinder track entirely resurfaced and put into excellent condition the last call for candidates for the team and candidates for the position of assistant manager was made by manager mercer b tate at a meeting held in the trophy room of the gymnasium monday afternoon the inter-class track meet will be held saturday afternoon april 10 for the purpose of taking time trials and picking men for the muhlenberg meet to be held april 17 the weather condidtions have been very favorable of late and with a continuance of the same the team will be rapidly whipped into shape by coach kanaly educational committee meets in new york d u team succumbs to siqma nus fighting hard for every point the sigma nu basketball team finally won out over the delta up silon team on thursday afternoon by the score of 10-8 the game was hard fought throughout and al though the delta upsilon quintet led at the end of the first half sigma nu evened the count and forged far enough ehead to lead by two points when the final whistle sounded field goals were few each side only getting three and it was through the foul shooting of melville and shaw that sigma nu won out sigr delta upsilon position melville f rice shaw . . f doan darsie c sharp stanier g mccarthy knerr ...... g ill field goals doan 2 melville shaw knerr morris foul goals melville 3 out of 5 shaw 1 out of 2 ; rice 2 out of 4 •< we fit end of fl»t lialf . delta upsilon 6 sigma nu 5 final score : sigma nu 10 ; delta up silon 8 substitutions : morris for sharp referee : boquel continued on third page in one of the best and hardest contested meets in intercollegiate wrestling the lehigh team was forced to accept a tie for the fourth place with yale and princeton al though the brown and white mat men fought their best the odds were too heavy against them and entering the finals with only two men they did not have a very big chance then too the fact that capt booth who was the favorite of the heavyweight class failed to retain his championship caused the last hope of lehigh to dwindle booth fought a magnificient bout with gait of yale and lost to a rival who had many pounds of weight above his own as one newspaper says a gridiron at mosphere surrounded the classic bout of the heavyweight class captain booth with all the aggres siveness known to him on the le , u j feragm d^p^^+ply against gait yale's all american tackle and four sport man the yale athlete possessed a consider able weight advantage this quotation shows just how splendid founder's day is celebrated annually in the state of maryland and the lehigh maryland club ob served this year's holiday by hold ing a smoker at moose hall thurs day evening a j sakievich 21 presided and opened the affair with a short talk he gave a brief his torical sketch of maryland and traced the history of the club dr natt emery was then introduced as the next speaker he spoke of the advantages which a college edu cation affords a young man and the position of lehigh among promin ent institutions of the country his talk was convincing and well received after dr emery's ad dress several interesting piano solos were played by b ettleman 21 captain lang had previously been announced as one of the speakers but he was unable to at tend on account of illness in his family a number of popular songs were then rendered by f w w;wm 22 sad a j ?~ i - \ 21 both members of the glee club and the smoker was brought to a close by the singing of ' ' maryland my maryland followed by the alma mater good cheer was prevalent throughout the smoker and it was pronounced successful f a oehm 21 who arranged the smoker desires all members to keep in touch with him in regard to the forthcoming box party at the lyric theatre sophomores elect epitome editors coach w t o'neil takes hold of lacrosse squad dr john h finley eminent educator and author on friday morning presented a vivid picture of palestine from which he has recently returned before an audi ence of lehigh students faculty and townspeople in packer mem orial church lehigh university by the spoken word and by stere opticon view he showed conditions in the holy land as they were dur ing the dramatic days when gen eral allenby's british force won jerusalem from the turkish army — a battle without blood in introducing dr finley presi dent drinker referred to his work as president of the university of the state of new york and to his service in the preparedness move ment as a member of the advisory committee of college presidents on the summer military training camps dr finley responded with this tribute to dr drinker i come to lehigh today out of regard and esteem and affection for dr drinker i pay homage to him as author of the plattsburg idea he has performed a notable service to this country of which lelr'gh may well be proud ' ' then in a delightfully discur sive and humorous style dr finley outlined the trip to the holy land which he made as an informal rep resentative of this country he told of an airplane flight he took across from egypt to palestine in which the pilot covered in two hours and thirty-five minutes one sunday morning the distance over which the children of israel spent forty years in their wanderings he gave numerous word pictures of scenes among ' ' the bare stark hills of the promised land where for months not a drop of rain fell at present methods of agriculture there are as primitive as they were three thousand years ago lantern views were shown upon the screen tracing the course of dr finley s travels through ser bia macedonia egypt and the holy land of great interest to his hearers was dr finley s reciting of the epitaph he wrote for the young british soldiers who gave their lives just outside jerusalem a fine specimen of his power as a poet — beyond the holy city lies these never saw its glory with their eyes they never reached the crest ;
