general electric co patents and the elements of pat ent law discussed by the speaker visit many places in new york and general electric co in schenectady university dance the senior mechanical class took their annual inspection trip to new york at the close of the christmas recess the headquarters for the trip was at the marlborough-blenheim hotel the students met at city hall park at 10.15 on monday january sth 1914 where prof p b deschweinitz took charge of the party a great many places of in terest were visited the students were cordially received at the plants and guides were furnished who ex plained the systems used the most important of the places visited in new york and vicinity are woolworth building ham burg-american line steamer am erika new york herald building crocker wheeler electric compa ny high-pressure pumping plant fire service interborough pow er house babcock and wilcox co american society of mechanical engineers edison waterside sta tion de la vergne machine co tiffany garage and ruppirt's brewery the following were on the trip : backes bickley burdick brooke degler bowman bland chun ka vanaugh leonard nachman ow en wright cook sellers galloway richardson van sickle murphy green quast nordenholt galaine na and mcconnor meeting wednesday for the organization of a soccer league here wednesday at three o'clock in the field house there will be a meet ing of all interested in the organi zation of a soccer association in this university the purpose of the association is to promote a gen eral interest in the game and fre quent contests between different parts of the university classes sec tions etc it is hoped also at an early date to form a team which may represent the university a gainst haverford villa nova and other colleges professor reiter is in hearty sympathy with the pur poses of the association and the department of physical education will cooperate so far as possible in providing a place to play and facil ities for training players soccer football is probably the oldest and the most widely-played of all the sports of the modern world there are many who think it is far the best game in existence for the average college student the man who needs to get fast snappy exercise for an hour every day and who also wants to train himself in endurance and activity and physical alertness moreover all a ho have come out to the games declare it is the best fun going soccer is played every day at three o'clock a second game is played from four to five if there are enough to make sides if you have not tried the game come out the first chance you get and have the best fun you ever had weight and strength are not required nor is previous knowledge of the game necessary as large numbers are already coming out at three o'clock it is suggested that those who would like to join the ranks arrange to come at four in case they find the ground too crowded at three everyone interested in the game should attend the organization meeting at 3 p m this wednes day january 14th in the field house the meeting will take but a short time so that the regular game for the afternoon may then be played dr rau to speak the seyfert making their headquarters at the hotel victoria the first place visited was the pier of the compagnie generale trans lantic where they inspected the ocean liner la france from there the class went to the wool worth building where they were met by mr c e knox the design er of the entire electrical equip ment of the building the follow ing day was spent in the edison new york waterside plant and the buildings of the american tel ephone and telegraph and west ern union telegraph companies on wednesday morning the class visited the 53rd street subway sta tion and power house of the inter borough rapid transit co which supplies all the power for the sub way and elevated lines as well as for a number of the surface car systems the afternoon of the same day was spent in the grand central station and train shed which is the largest and best equip ped railway station in the country at six p m the class accompanied by prof esty left for schenectady wireless society while in schenectady the party made its headquarters at the new vendome hotel the principle place of interest visited being the works of the general electric co the class was the guest of this company for lunch and in the evening was entertained at dinner at the mo hawk golf club by the lehigh university alumni club of north ern new york on friday morn ing the works of the general elec tric co were again visited and at 2 p m the class left for new york where the evening was spent in at tending the monthly meeting of the a i e e saturday and sunday the class returned to south beth lehem the students taking the trip were : aungst baldwin church danner flick forster gemmel griffith poust schoolbred todd wang williamson and ych all senior class ballots must be in by january 15th the pictures must be taken by february ist at mccaa's studio chemical society there will be a meeting of the chemical society in saucon hall thursday at 8.00 p m the first of a series of univer sity dances will be held in the audi torium of drown memorial hall on saturday evening january 17th arthur smith's orchestra of eas ton seven pieces will furnish the music tickets will be 50c each these dances are being arranged by a committee of ladies of the faculty assisted by a committee from the student-body a cordial invitation is extended to members of all four classes it is felt that these functions will add materially to the social life of the university the chaperones of this dance will be mrs albert ladd colby mrs natt m emery mrs eugene g grace mrs guy r johnson mrs preston a lambert mrs barry macnutt mrs benjamin smith esq m e 03 member of the new york bar de livered a lecture in the chapel fri day on patents — some essential facts for the engineer his ad dress embodied patents and the ele ments of patent law which are very essential and necessary to the engi neer because as he said our fac tories are making patented articles on patented machines to a great ex tent and you will be working in or for those factories trying to in crease production or get more busi ness or at least to make sure to keep your own jobs and get better ones perhaps he outlined vari ous instances wherein an engineer as a designer or experimenter could materially profit by his knowledge of patents and patent law the ex tent of this knowledge was grouped under four heads 1 what a patent is how it is obtained and what it purports to give you 2 how to determine the scope or value of a patent 3 when it is worth while to make an invention and se cure a patent on it and 4 how in a general way to make use of a patent to get value out of it in discussing the first division as given above mr smith said a patent is a grant in the nature of a contract between the united states and the inventor the gov ernment gives the inventor the ex clusive right for seventeen years to make to use and to sell what ever it is that is covered by the patent the inventor in return for this monopoly makes his invention public by clearly describing it in his patent the obtaining of a patent is a complicated procedure and often requires the advice and skill of a man a patent lawyer who is experienced in this particular line of business to get a patent mr smith says the application is pre pared and filed in the patent office together with a filing fee of 15 in this application is the appoint ment of an attorney the specifica tions describing the invention and having at the end a number of claims which show what is protect ed by the patent and an oath the application is sent to the one of the forty odd different divisions of the patent office which considers your class of invention after a thor ough investigation the examiner may allow the case and the patent is awarded in case two similar continued on second page the arts and science club will be the guests of the members of leonard hall this thursday even ing every year the warden gives the club a reception which is long remembered a very good speaker has been se cured in dr a g rau dean of moravian college dr rau has chosen as his subject early settlers in the bethlehems and no one is better able to talk on this matter the meeting will be called at 8.30 and the club extends an invitation to all in college to be present the january meeting of the wireless society will be held in the e e lecture room of the phys ics building on thursday january 15th at 7.30 p m work on the new station is going on and it will be soon finished provided more members of the society take inter est in it now the meetings of the society as well as membership are open to all men in college fordham to-morrow at 8.00 p m in the colosseum pittsburgh lehigh club the alumni holds an enthusiastic meeting in the university club one stadium section pittsburgh-lehigh club votes to give one concrete stadium section the pittsburgh-lehigh club at an enthusiastic mid-winter meeting and smoker held in the university club pittsburgh on saturday even ing unanimously voted to donate a section of the concrete stadium now being erected on taylor field the pittsburgh alumni thereby second ed the motion made by the north eastern pennsylvania club when at a recent meeting the northeastern club was the first alumni organiza tion to pledge a grandstand section it is understood that other clubs plan at gatherings this winter to keep rolling the ball of alumni sup port of the stadium the new york club already has a committee work ing on the matter at the pittsburgh club smoker on saturday evening the movement was launched by wm a cornelius m e 89 manager of the national tube co who made the motion to donate a section robert t mor row jr superintendent of the pittsburgh division of the pennsyl vania railroad who is president of the lehigh-pittsburgh club was in structed by the meeting to appoint a committee to take up the raising of funds mr cornelius who was made chairman of this committee quietly conferred during the even ing with a number of members and about one-third of the amount re quired 3,200 was forthwith pledged ten members of the club put their names down for 100 each a feature of the meeting — which was attended by about 100 persons — was the celebration by word pic ture and song of the donation to lehigh of the new gymnasium and swimming pool the gift of charles l taylor 76 in his speech president drinker who headed a delegation from the university said : we owe it to our honored alumnus charles l taylor of 76 that in our new gym nasium and athletic field — taylor field — where we are to have am ple space and facilities unsurpassed in any institution in the country to see to it that our young men have full opportunity for exercise and recreation stereoptican views depicting progress on taylor gymnasium and both
