senior class book committee begins work of editing lehigh loses to muhlenberg in sixteenth grid battle true lehigh spirit shown dad's on annual visit sat dads day entertainment beginning with friday's smoker and ending with the football game was decided success allentown gridders after being held on even terms thruout the first half score winning touchdowns in second period year book seniors assessed fourteen dollars for space in lehigh yearlings handed 19-0 defeat by allen town invaders many mothers also attend zahnow stars for lehigh pratt kicks well pictures planned though perhaps not many more than two hundred dads saw their sons at lehigh sat urday this number took back home with them a truly glori fied idea of the university ev erything that met their eyes told them of the worth of the training that their sons are now undergoing though they did not see their sons under the unnatural enthusiasm that is borne of victory the dads wit nessed pep and spirit even in the face of defeat they saw ly in his 67 yard run for a touchdown but in his fine of fensive and defensive work throughout the game jack levitz backed up the line won derfully well hand also made some pretty runs and showed admirable generalship con on page 3 col 3 lehigh first kicked off the red team brought the ball back to mid-field the first three at tempts at line plunging and off tackle plays went for naught the big brown line proved im pi delta epsilon plans activities many routes for bucknell journey good highways lead to lewisburg over moun tainous trail bob harrier gives re port of annual conven tion of society banquet planned rail connections lehigh complimented lehigh was recently paid a very high tribute by ed thorpe one of the ablest football officials in the coun try who officiated at the princeton - lehigh game thorpe made a statement which very clearly summar ized the lehigh spirit here was an eleven said thorpe which had made only six points against opponents up to the tiger game and who came to the jungle so much the under dog that everyone expected the bethlehem team to be be snowed under by a top heavy score but when they romped out on the princeton field they were nothing less than eleven devils no outfit in the country could have held that lehigh eleven that day they were supermen and ev eryone of them crazy as a loon it was a great game clean as a whistle that is the lehigh spirit and invariably expresses the sentiment of all those who saw the game with that spirit and determination the big brown team should fin ish the season in a very suc cessful manner sword & crescent pledges two men their sons stand up and fight when victory was denied them the revelation of this accom plishment started with the smo ker on friday evening this af fair bristled with the pep and enthusiam of the student body and the speakers rising with the heavy smoke clouds was the demand for victory and the assertion that lehigh is never beaten no matter how the score looks the dads enjoyed that and they too fell in with the spirit of their sons and cheered lehigh to new endeavors on saturday morning the dads had the opportunity of seeing a part of the scholastic routine of the lehigh students although it was the wish of the students to have been free that morning they entered upon their work in the manner that is an absolute necessity for the high standards of lehigh con on page 4 col 6 the luncheon in the cafeteria was not attended by so very many fathers but there were sufficient there to form an ex cellent audience for the words of the two important speakers president richards addressed n r castor and i w lit tell chosen by honor ary saturday last saturday lehigh bowed o muhlenberg 32-6 before he largest crowd of spectators hat has graced taylor stadium to witness a game this season it was a decisive vic tory for the allentown gridders who rolled up the largest score yet inflicted on a brown and white team in their sixteen years of relationship the le high team started the game with the vigor and vim that was characteristic of their mor al victory over princeton last week their defense was su perb and their offense effec tive but towards the end of the second quarter something happened some unseen force descended upon the home team and demoralized it from that time on it was a mere matter of trying in vain to check the fast and tricky muhlenberg backfield borelli and greenberg out shone the rest of their team with their brilliant end runs line smashes and forward passes a deceptive lateral pass proved to be their most effec tive weapon zahnow starred for the lehigh gridders not on muhlenberg smoker enjoyed by dads vacancies filled dr rau tells 0f local history at the meeting of the senior class held last thursday morn ing at eleven o'clock in coppee hall many important phases of the work to be done by the seniors for their record in the epitome were decided upon the most important step taken was the adoption of a national photographer to do the work for the year book instead of having each member of the sen ior class going to his own per sonal photographer after the meeting was open ed tfye president of the class read a letter from the board of publications recommending the adoption of a national pho tographer to handle all the senior work john cox chair man of the senior class book committee was then called up on to explain the reasons for this innovation con on page 3 col i ) of the various offers submit ted for national photographic work the white studios of new york city gave the best proposition all the seniors will pay 1.50 to a white stu dio representative at the time of their sitting entitling them not only to their sitting but also to a picture in the year book this amount will be credited to anyone who later or ders pictures from the white studio any men who are dis history of moravians and founding of bethlehem traced by speaker after holding the strong rut gers frosh eleven to a score less tie last week the lehigh yearling team proved some what of a disappointment to its followers by lowering its colors to the muhlenberg first-year gridders 19-0 in a preliminary game to the varsity engage ment on saturday but the de feat was not a disgraceful one for the allentown aggregation established a fine reputation by routing the perkiomen forces 46-0 while the best the local collegians did was to garner a 7-6 victory over the same team the visitors presented a fast powerful team with a diversi fied attack and a strong de fense their off-tackle drives were consistent ground-gain ers their passing game was well-developed and proved to be a fine asset outweighed the lehigh forwards were out played and the backfield did not cooperate sufficiently to vacancies in the membership made by covert and lewis now out of college called for the election of two new men the sword and cres cent last week held a meeting at the chi psi house and there after hearing of the investiga tion of the standing of the various active seniors these men were decided upon as be ing most worthy of the honor the sword and crescent is a strictly honorary society with eligibility based mainly upon the degree in which a man is active in the extra curricula work of the university the records of littell and castor show that they have done a great deal for lehigh lit tell captain of the football team has held a position on the team in each of his four con on page 2 col 7 the lehigh chapter of the pi delta epsilon the national senior honorary publication so ciety held its first meeting of the year last thursday eve ning in drown hall the first business to be at tended to after president chas k zug called the meeting to order was the election of a vice president to succeed j a cov ert who unfortunately failed to return to college this year her bert w mccord was elected to fill this vacancy he with robert a harrier treasurer and william f wilmurt secre tary compose the remainder of the executives of the society who under the capable leader ship of president zug are for mulating plans to make this year the most successful in the history of the lehigh chapter several men whose namos will be announced at a later date were deemed worthy to be elected to membership in the society only men who have done outstanding work upon student publications are con sidered for membership in pi delta epsilon and it is an hon or which few men attain con on page 3 col 2 the concensus of opinion fav ored having an initiation ban quet this year these banquets which were formerly the cus tom have not been in vogue for six or eight years and it is the purpose of the present ad ministration to make this one of the many improvements in the society during the ensuing year a committee was ap pointed to look into the matter and a definite announcement as lehigh university calendar senior notice it is necessary that every senior cooperates with the senior class book commit tee in having his picture taken by the white studio representative at the time for which they will be sche duled since the class unan imously approved white studio to take all the senior pictures only those pictures taken by white will be plac ed in the senior section last wednesday the lehigh booters made the trip to west point and returned with a hard earned victory listed to their credit the cadets put their inevitable strong team into ac tion and this 2-0 victory is a good indication of the manner in which the brown and white soccer men are rounding into rnidseason form the men from up the hudson were heavy and well coached and it took out standing playing by phyfe ne vins and beck combined with excellent cooperation from the entire team to finally bring about their defeat the future generals were unwilling to take a beating and although the fighting lehigh warriors with their fast footwork and heady playing finally chalked up a win it wasn't clinched until the final whistle awoke the echoes of the palisades lubberman the army goal was the outstanding player for the opponents but in spite of his yeoman work both beck and nevins succeeded in putting the ball between the goal-posts thus scoring the second lehigh con on page 4 col 3 while interested spectators students and guests witnessed the fine gridiron spectacle sat urday and contributed to the enthusiasm which prevailed in taylor stadium there was little thought of but the immediate present until a cannon was fir ed five times before the var sity game commenced and the rendering of taps and the singing of america took place between the halves through the medium of this simple but solemn ceremony several thou sand people received an addi tional thrill not bargained for when they purchased their pasteboards it was the reali zation which seldom comes to one that had it not been for the creative genius of one walter camp football games would not be in existence con on page 3 col 1 it was a brilliant idea that encouraged walter camp's fel low associates and survivors to endeavor to preserve the great sportsman's memory forever the manner in which they de cided to accomplish this pur pose is highly commendable the officials of the national collegiate athletic association and of yale univ agreed to perpetuate the memory of the the second big smoker of the year was held in the lower gym last fri day night short speeches were made by bosey reiter dr richards and bucky mc donald that furnished the stimulus for an encouraging display of pep from all who were present a tumbling ex hibition was given along with band music yells and songs that made the gathering enjoy able to everyone every man who came to the gym was supplied with the old standby corn-cob and a little picnic twist the room was soon filled with the aroma of to bacco smoke while everyone puffed on his newly begotten pipe bud nutting presided over the meeting and opened it with the song hail the col lege after which he introduc ed bucky mcdonald to the dads especially and bucky gave a talk for several minutes this speech was followed by applause and then by the touchdown song the band then rendered a selection and miller 30 and burke 30 gave an exhibition of their tumbling ability bosey reiter was in troduced and was received with a storm of applause he open ed his talk with a poem the sportsman's dean of mora vian college talk on begin nings of old bethlehem be fore introducing the speaker dr gipson of the history de partment chairman of the lec ture committee promised better facilities for the next lecture at the same time stating that a very interesting lecture pro gram was being planned with the help of several upper class men dr rau began his talk by saying that the average student who came to bethlehem knew little more about the town oth er than it was the home of le high university and that while he learned more about the town the longer he was in it certain very interesting
