action of ath letic committee any organization may get per mission to play on field at a meeting of the athletic committee it was decided that the base ball diamond could be used by the students of the university for any inter-class course society section or fraternity base ball games provided times could be selected which would not interfere in any way with the work of the varsity or scrub teams the idea of using the university diamond for such games has been talked of for the past few years by the students but it was only this spring that the right kind of men took hold of the project and brought it before the athletic commiteee in such form as to meet with its hearty approval the rhole student body is under obli gations to those who have perfected the arrangements for giving this opportunity which can be enjoyed by all and greatly appreciates the liberal action of the athletic com mittee in this case for use of the men playing in these games the committee has purchased a catcher's mask glove and chest protector a first base man's glove and three bats it is required that all men playing on the diamond wear either tennis or low-heeled shoes dates for games are to be handed in to the secretary of the athletic committee who will reserve the right to use the diamond at a given time for the first organization requesting it to secure the proper return of such paraphernalia as the committee lends someone must sign as being i responsible during the game in which they are used b h s l c meeting tuesday april 19 all men interested in track are to meet on the field at i p m wedn esd a y apr i l 20 — brown and white board meeting in drown hall at 12 o'clock freshman class meeting at 12 o'clock in saucon mall tennis match lehigh vs laf ayette on the home courts thursday april 21 — arts and science club meeting bacteri oology laboratory williams hall 7.30 p m chemical society meeting in saucon hall at 8 p m friday april 22 — college meeting in packer hall at 11 o'clock base ball game lehigh vs tufts on lehigh field at 3 p m „» c c n y cancels the lacrosse game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon against c c n y has been cancelled it is understood that the new yorkers have not a representative team this year an effort was made to have cornell come down to ill the given date but the faculty at cornell would not allow the members of the team to take the necessary cuts lehigh loses in practice game last saturday afternoon the base ball team played a practice game against the bethlehem preparatory school nine on the latter's diamond in west bethlehem the final score was 2 ! in favor of the prep team the loss of the game was due to bilheimer's wild pitching throughout the game numerous substitutions were made in the le high team almost every man who has been out this spring was given a chance to play only three men played the entire nine innings kempsmith catcher fisher 3rd base and anderson 2nd base the score by innings was as follows — lehigh o o t o o o o o 6—l6 — i b p s o o o o i o o o ii — 2 battery for lehigh bilheimer and over p kempsmith c b p s siring and schellenberger p farber and creenhalgh c j j schultz 09 is spending several days in town lehigh defeats columbia 8-1 continued on third page lacrosse team fulfills predic tions and swamps columbia the first home lacrosse game of this season was played on lehigh field on saturday with columbia as our opponents and resulted in an easy victory for lehigh by the score of 8-1 the game played by our men gave excellent indications of a good team this season and bright prospects for the championship the stick work and passing by lehigh was very good and the game as a whole was unattended by particular roughness usually evident in lacrosse our attack showed up well and the defense showed itself equal to the occasion at the rare times they were called upon on the other hand colum bia's team with the exception of macintosh the goal was weak on defense and not any better on attack . lehigh's first goal was shot after the lirst five minutes of play by mccoy on the next face-off niesen secured the ball and with nice running passed to dunn who shot the second goal within less than a minute of play this whirl wind of attack by lehigh com pletely took columbia off her feet and three goals were shot by bowan in succession in rapid time one more goal was shot in the first half after which columbia tighten ed up and prevented further scoring the score first half 60 in the second half k williams took schaffner's place and the game was continued in the same lightning manner as the first half rowan scored one more goal for lehigh in quick order columbia braced at this point and fought hard le high s defense was equal to the occasion but after a hard tussle a lucky shot by pitts gave columbia her first and only score a number of substitutions were made by lehigh after columbia's goal and all of the new men put in showed iip well and gave good assurance of able substitutes in case of injury to the varsity men the game slowed up a little and the last and final score was made by dunn for lehigh all of the men showed up well and it would be unfair to comment the bethlehem high school le high club held its regular monthly meeting on thursday night the committee solt mo and solomon ml provided a fried oyster feed the following officers were elected for the ensuing year — president c e bilheimer m 0 vice-president it i king 12 secretary j a solomon m treasurer r fatzinger ml and sth member executive committee r p more mo important matters decided at recent meetings at the regular meeting of the athletic committee on april 7th the following action was taken — a lacrosse game with navy at annapolis on april 23rd was j approved . r v l c s.—concern5 .— concern ing scrub team numerals was amended so as to allow the award of numerals not to exceed 15 in foot ball the following numerals in foot ball were awarded for faithful attendance at practices in the fall of 1909 upon recommendation of i the captain of the team — 1 910 moncrieff livesay strauch ; and parker 1911 o h smith rehfus 1912 franklin fuller cann 1913 wilson rooney ackerly price siegel schmidt a plan for encouraging inter course class fraternity and sec tion base ball games was approved the following were awarded the basket ball insigna for the 1909 season cook merkel muthart butler lawson the following were awarded the basket ball monogram l u b b t rebert sindel the following schedule for the scrub base ball team was approved april 27th bethlehem prep at bethlehem may 16 th nazareth hall at nazareth . may 25th allentown prep at a lien town a base ball game with lebanon valley at home was approved for april 29th the request of the tennis associ ation to play matches on wednes day and saturday afternoons was granted for this year only in order to try out the experiment on april 16th a special meeting was called and the following action was taken tennis schedule approved — april 20 lafayette at home may 7 rutgers at new bruns wick n j may 11 haverford at haver ford may 1.8 lafayette at easton may 28 swarthmore at home additions to track schedule approved — april 30 it pa relay races may 11 inter-class meet the brown and white calendar lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday april 19 1910 vol xvii use of diamond is granted no 46
