resolved that we the members of the lehigh university press club do hereby thank dr wil liams for his greatly appreciated and valued assistance and be it further resolved that the secretary of the club deliver a copy of these resolutions to dr williams and se cure their publication by the col lege and local papers b p i club the regular wednesday after noon rehearsal of the minstrel show saw an increased number of candidates reporting for the various parts several new songs were tried while the old ones were thoroughly practiced after the chorus was dismissed the end men were given a semi-final trial which resulted in the selection of eight men from fifteen candidates as be ing the best a later trial will be held when the final selection will be made for the six men who will crac the jokes in the show this was the last rehearsal be fore the thanksgiving holidays the chorus will be picked on wed nesday december 5 which will be the first rehearsal after the thanks giving vacation the candidates seem to be very good while every indication points to a great show on december 15 alumni proceedings continued on page three the proceedings of the alumni association of lehigh university for the year from june 1905 to june 1906 has just been published it contains the usual lists of alumni arranged alphabetically according to classes and occupations and geo graphically ; the reports of the ath letic committee and various alumni committees ; the proceedings at the meeting held last june ; the alumni address delivered at the com mencement exercises last june by s d warriner 90 the constitu tion of the association and a list of non graduate students who en tered the university prior to june 1902 under the heading general remarks the athletic committee had this to say which is of interest to the student body : the available graded portion of our athletic field at present de voted to various sports is not suffi ciently large to accommodate all the students who wish to take part in outdoor athletics we need an other one for the use of class fra ternity and faculty teams for practice and match games these games are now played in various places this field can be provided by grading the south side of our grounds but will require the ex penditure of considerable money as the surface is quite steep and rocky ; however it should be done as soon as the funds will permit the treasurer's report dated august 6 1906 shows balances in the general and field funds of 530.95 and 956.53 as compared with 2539.37 and 789.91 on july 1 1905 basket ball was the only self-supporting branch of athletics the net gain for the season beine 223.92 the net losses in other sports were football 156 base ball 580 lacrosse 188 gym nasium 60 ; track and field 150 of a total of 1593 gradu ates 1494 are living the list of non-graduate students numbers from 1400 to 1500 little is known concerning most of these men and all information will be gladly re ceived by the secretary the officers of the alumni asso ciation for the present year are as follows : while not as largely attended as it might have been the meeting of the mechanical engineering soci ety on wednesday night was one of the best held for some time swope 07 called the meeting to order and layman 07 read the minutes of the last meeting which were approved the treasurer was next called on and his report show ed 27.92 on hand after a discussion it was decided to hold the meeting on tuesday night instead of wednesday the seniors and juniors favor tuesday night as they have very little work to prepare for wednesday while the sophomores have only one les son to prepare the first paper of the evening was by steele 07 on the general arrangement of the pennsylvania railroad repair shops at olean n y steele has worked there for two summers and is well in formed on the plans of the work the shops repair and turn out from thirty-five to forty engines a month while there is room for sixteen en gines at one time in the erecting de partment it is not the custom for the railroads to build their own shops but the pennsylvania erected these throughout with the excep tion of the masonry work all of the large machines aie run directly by motors while the smaller machines are run in 50 and 25 horse power groups most ot the larger mach ines have air hoists to handle the work and tools steele drew a diagram on the board illustrating the exact location of the different departments of the work and showed the convenience of having each where it is these included the machine and erecting shops round house smith shop power house store hov e boiler shop tool rooms and offices next on the program was a dis cussion by utley 07 on " the use of small size anthracite coal for power plants first he showed the advantages of using the small size coal the principal one of which was from a standpoint of cost comparing the number of heat units gotten out of $ 1 00 worth of coal of the different sizes it was shown that ( continued on third page ) on wednesday night of last week twelve men from baltimore poly technic institute met in the room of de baufre 07 and organized a a club to be known as the balti more polytechnic institute club of lehigh the object of the club is to promote the interests of lehigh in baltimore and to increase the dele gation from that place president de baufre 07 ;
