about 75 members attended the second annual banquet of the so phomore class held at the hotel wyandotte last friday night the affair was a marked success both as to the number present and the spirit displayed it was after nine o'clock before the festivities began so that the 1909 students were in a receptive mood for the tempting menu the table was arranged in the shape of an l with president g d spiers who acted in the capacity of toastmaster and the invited guests at the upper end neat souvenirs in the form of menus were given to each person present the guests of the evening included president carlock of the senior class president smith of the 1908 class coach garry of the base ball team and captain travis trout man and mcnally of the various college teams each of the guests made a short address after which toastmaster spiers called for the following toasts our future lehigh w r walters the honor system c u shank now and then w a drissler the ladies n wigton the class f h kaiser several mem bers also responded extempora neously the singing of the alma mater brougut the successful affair to a close the committee in charge was chairman a bellis j boyle h h ketcham f s kirk w g moore l c zol linger the alpha tau omega fraternity held its annual banquet at the sun inn hotel saturday night among those present were dr n wiley thomas of philadelphia ; h a fritch and dr mantz of bethlehem ; j e gomery ex-'95 ; w e ruhe 96 chas enzian 01 g s messinger 03 e r geisewite ex 06 j g stnull 06 c n underwood 06 h m burkey 06 and r a huyett ex-'cx basketball captain immediately after the manhattan game the members of the basket ball team held election for captain frank c anderson 08 was chosen anderson has been a member of the team for the last three years playing at forward for most of the time during the last seasoa he has averaged over five goals to a game lehigh ended a very successful basket ball season on saturday afternoon with a fast but decidedly onesided game with manhattan college the game was played on our own floor and lehigh was de termined to win from the boys who beat them in new york on febru ary 23rd from the very start lehigh had things her own way passing and shooting almost at will always keeping the ball at a safe distance from her opponents goal manhattan made about thirty five attempts at goals most of which were long chance shots and as a result only ten were success ful whereas out of lchigh's fifty five attempts forty were succecsful in the first half the men scored goals as follows keife five travis four troutman two anderson four porter two donovan three in the second half street replaced keife and goals were scored as fol lows travis two troutman eight anderson seven porter one street five manhattan scored seven goals travis threw three fouls for lehigh every man on the team played excellently keife an derson and troutmen doing excep tionally good work for manhat tan perhaps donovan played the best game a short summary of the results of games played this season is as follows out of twelve games play ed nine were won one forfeited — to pratt institute — and two lost — one to pennsylvania and one to man hattan total number of points scored lehigh 580 opponents 235 no games were lost on our own floor the team is certainiy to be congrat ulated upon their very excellent work the line-up lehigh positions manhattan keife f hanhran troutman anderson f o'hallarhan bolton continued on page three stanley zwiebel ex-ob was in town last week he is located at carbondale the illustrated lecture on the creation of a manufacturing plant by mr walter b snow last fri day was most interesting and in structive mr snow is manager of the advance department of the b f sturtevant co boston and has had extensive experience in the construction of his company's plant as was shown by his lecture in the absence of dr drinker and prof merriman prof klein as sen ior professor introduced mr snow after a few introductory words mr snow first told of the condi tions to be satisfied in selecting a site he said there were five con siderations namely : railroad facili ties quality of land for foundations of buildings water supply lack of hindrances to a manufacturing con cern and a space for dumping waste the site was also to be near the old plant if possible so as to retain the old employes the plans for the buildings were first given to architects and engin eers and bids were gotten for two buildings when the company de cided to make their own plans and do the work themselves this they did with a saving of twenty per cent in the cost of the build ings they effected this great sav ing by buying all materials direct from the manufacturer and elimi nating architect's and engineer's fees the heads of the several de partments gave the requirements of their departments allowing for fu ture growth the business was divided into three general groups with a build ing for each group the buildings were designed for a progression in the system of manufacture lan tern slides were shown of different arrangements of the buildings with best adapted for the future growth of the plant the buildings were made of brick with foundations of concrete at first it was thought best not to employ steel in the construction because of its weakness when sub jected to fire wood was used wherever possible wood floors g e chamberlain a c 93 was on the campus monday he is now manager of the glucose factory of the st louis syrup and preserving co continued on fourth at the wyandotte fri day night basket ball season ends with decisive de feat of manhattan 83-20 excellent concert held saturday * night the concert by the musical as sociation was given at the grand opera house saturday evening march 16 the concert was a very decided success this was the first public appearance of the com bined musical clubs this year there is quite a contrast for the better between the concert held this year and that held last year not only are the clubs much larger but the improvement in their work is very noticable the attendance though larger than last year was not as large as it should have been the audience was verp appreciative and the clubs were forced to give encores to every piece from start to finish it was highly enjoyed the mandolin club and glee club appeared upon the program three times and the enthusiastic applause they received each time was no more than they deserved the banjo club showed up par ticularly well in the two selections that they gave bason and thomas gave an instrumental duet that was greatly appreciated as was also the cavalier's song of bruce swope the alma mater given by the combined clubs was a fitting close to a mighty fine concert alpha tau omega banquet
