the meeting of the y m c a sunday afternoon in the chapei was addressed by bishop talbor the subject being the common place things of life the discussion was based on the sth chapter of 2 kings in which the story is told of the cleansing of naaman one of the best lessons to be drawn from this instance is maaman's tendency to utterly dis regard common place things the despising of the ordinary in life is a wide spread and universal fault it crops out in every condi tion of hie and is evident in all men for example in reading a newspaper we are too often unsat isfied unless we read some news which is exciting we seem to desire something tragic and of extraordinary bril lancy and for that reason regard the common place as valueless unless life presents something ex citing and histrionic we are apt to regard it as useless like naaman we start out on our life's journey with visions of splendor and we feel that our service to the world cannot be overestimated years pass our dreams are unrealized and we see ourselves ordinary men enjoying ordinary pleasures and weeping over ordinary sor rows we often get tired of life because it is so commonplace and ordinary in a way we are like the savages who demand flashy colors and stirring deeds if life does not have a touch of the heroic we de clare it unfruitful in the christian's experience this same element is met we come to christ because w r e are as naaman spotted with disease but we come expecting to be dealt with in a tragic way we would have all bad habits removed all remains of sin blotted out and be made saints in the twinkling of an eye not so for the christian religion is not a mere display of the heroic religion is not foreign ; it is fundamental it does not perpetuate extraneous and outside notions ; it furnishes the most complete satisfaction of the soul's aspirations when christ asks a man to be religious he asks him to stand fast for manhood courage and nobility and to spurn all influences tending toward their opposites there are several reasons why the common place is to be re spected in the first place the greater part of one's daily life is passed in performing acts which are in themselves ordinary the ordinary day is a day of routine with ordinary tasks there is more 1 downright happiness and brightness in the common and or dinary things of life than the ex traordinary can even dream
