defeated them by a mar gin of 35 to 0 at the victor's field wilson scored the first touch down for lafayette by plowing his way through the lehigh in terference for ninety-eight yards from where he received the kickoff lehigh imme diately tightened and fought with every means of offense to keep the rivals within their lim its but were unable to block them from scoring twenty-two points in the first period con on page 4 col 5 during the second period le high showed perfect form by holding lafayette without a last tuesday at the r o t fc drill scabbard and blade the honorary military frater nity here at lehigh pledged five cadet officers captains r a shoup c l wright j e bev an and lieutenants r e free man and h m shipley scabbard and blade was founded by a member of cadet officers at the university of wisconsin in the year of 1905 and chapters were formed at some of the state universities having cadet corps the so ciety lay dormant during the world war as practically all of its members were in the service since the war it has grown very fast due to the interest in mili tary training manifested by students the society was formed due con on page 2 col 4 definite announcement was made last thursday that the la fayette squad would leave eas ton next wednesday to com plete its training for the annual battle with lehigh at strouds burg monroe county approx imately twenty-five men will be taken to the mountains where the finishing touches will be put on prior to the last engagement of the season for the maroon with little concern felt over the susquehanna game last satur day coach maccracken drilled the squad all last week with the lehigh struggle in view and le high plays have been reviewed in every practice rain fell during the practices last week but it did not interrupt the drill unless casualties make an unexpected appearance every con on page 3 col 6 alfred univ wins middle atlantic cross=country run booters take win from university of pennsylvania physics journal club addressed by mr palmer small score but fast game and snappy toe work by both teams describes research in radio field — working models shown starting as a dark horse orange-clad harriers run to decisive victory last-minute rally lehigh was sixth lively debate at the second regular college lecture held in the south side high school auditorium mr john mills of the american tel ephone and telegraph company was the speaker and his topic was choosing a vocation his speech dealt with the various types of pesonalities and tem peraments found in human na ture and brought out the fact that all men are not alike for this reason there are men to fill every type of position and the best means of finding work for which one is suited is self-analy zation there are several motives for success and these to a certain extent determine the type in which the individual belongs these motives are self expres con on page 3 col 6 having been introduced by professor stoughton the speak er gained the approbation of the entire audience by saying that he hoped lehigh would be suc cessful in the encounter with lafayette next saturday the speech began with the remark that no man can do any sort of work well unless he is interest ed in the work at hand or has a great liking for that work for this reason any man who finds his work distasteful should cast about for a change both for his own benefit and the good of his employer the second meet of the chem ical society of lehigh was held in the chemistry lecture room on thursday evening november 12 the meeting was opened at 7:30 with a short address by hartland law president of the society dr ullmann faculty counselor for the society then gave a few words of introduc tion and presented the speaker of the evening dr miner of the welsbach gas mantle co dr miner has spoken at lehigh many times in the past and speaks before the chemical so ciety every third year accord ing to the present program of the society con on page s col 2 dr miner spoke on the rare earth metals but he prefaced the main part of his address by saying that he had been in the first class at lehigh to use the present chemical laboratory he also spoke with interest of the fact that he had seen the first lehigh-lafayette football game held in 1884 and said that he had made it a point to see as many as possible of the annual clashes between the two rival schools since that time in his introduction dr miner gave a brief history of the dis coveries of the rare earth met als he had with him speci mens of practically every rare earth metal of some of which he is the only possessor in the frosh football team to meet muhlenberg results of james of two remaining lehigh opponents postponed game to be played tomorrow on muhlenberg field lafayette wins easily but carnegie tech loses to notre dame one of the most important meetings of the physics journal club this year was held thurs day evening november 12 in the physics lecture room the meeting was started promptly at 7:30 when dr elias klein presented the speaker of the evening mr harris c palmer mr palmer gave a very inter esting talk on the piezo-elec trical effects in crystals even though the subject was a very technical one con on page 3 col 3 he started off by saying that there is a certain family of crys tals which includes such sub stances as quartz and rochelle salts that have a peculiar prop erty of oscillation which has proven of great value to the ra dio industry when theses crys tals are cut down to a certain phila lehigh club to hold pep meet plan to have special train for phila alumni to come to game although fighting with the old lehigh fighting spirit which has been noticeably lacking at the last few games lehigh was nev ertheless forced to taste its third consecutive defeat of the season last saturday when vil lanova scored a touchdown and at the same time prevented le high from scoring the final score was 6-0 an indication of the fact that the game was un usually hard-fought from start to finish villanova has a team this year that has been greatly un der-rated by most critics coach stuhldreher notre dame all american quarterback last year has developed a team that has just the proper speed punch and co-ordination and in addi tion he has given them a set of plays that are as deceptive as they are snappy it was a patch ed up lehigh team that bucked up against this well-oiled villa nova machine and came away with a 6-0 defeat after they had failed by inches to score a touchdown in the first quarter ; the defeat was far from being an overwhelming defeat for le high when the brown and white trotted on the field captain merrill won the toss and elect ed to defend the east goal and to kick off to villanova for the first few minutes neither side seemed to have any advan tage until after an exchange of punts in which lehigh had the decided advantage with the wind at their backs the brown and white began a march tow ard the goal line starting on the villanova twenty-five yard line the brown and white drove through the line and a forward pass from o'callahan to cannon brought the ball to the villanova ten yard line and after three more line bucks the ball was on the one-yard line with one down to put it over con on page 2 col 4 stephens went back for a des perate plunge through the line and the ball was over the referee signalled a touchdown and the lehigh stands were ju bilant but upon discussion the referee reversed his decision the calm and serenity of old south mountain was rudely broken by a huge gathering of loyal sons of lehigh last friday evening shadowy figures mov ing here and there steadily in creasing in number till by 7:30 the greater part of the student body was assembled around the flagpole the air was charged with that peculiar static known as college spirit head cheerleader winchester then started things going by leading a rousing cheer for that team which was given with such a vigor as to cause the window panes of packer hall to rattle then the band struck up the strains of every body takes their hat off to le high after this the band led the march to the upper field which was illuminated by the lurid glare of a huge bonfire the materials for said bonfire were furnished by the members of the class of 29 the side of the bank overlooking the soccer field was dotted with myriads of human figures it was indeed an inspiring sight to see this vast mass of humanity outlined in the firelight more cheering was then in or der and the rocks of old south mountain fairly rang with the echoes the band then played hail to lehigh the words be ing carried by hundreds of voic es next came sons of lehigh there was lots of pep and spir it in evidence but it was obvi ous that the men did not know the words so well it is to be hoped that this fault will be remedied by the night of the la fayette smoker then came a short but inspir ing address from pat paz zetti given with that intense feeling characteristic of all pat's speeches he said that the eleven or twenty-two men on the football squad can't beat lafayette alone it is only by the support of the entire student body that a victory will be pos sible it is up to them to con vince the team that they are with them to the finish judg ing from the response given pat when he asked if we were con on page 4 col 6 notice seniors m & c practice mustard & cheese competi tors for cast and chorus and assistant managers will meet in drown hall wednesday the 18th at 7 30 p m rehearsal ! instead of ending their season as was originally intended with last saturday's game with la fayette the frosh have still one more game before them this game is with the muhlenberg frosh and will be played wed nesday afternoon november 18 on the muhlenberg college ath letic field this game was orig inally scheduled for october 31 as a preliminary to the lehigh muhlenberg varsity game but due to the soggy condition of the turf it was thought advis able to postpone the game to a later date so as to keep the field in the best shape possible for the varsity contest con on page 4 col 3 the muhlenberg contest gives the brown and white year lings one more chance to win a game this season saturday's 35-0 defeat at the hands of the lafayette frosh marked their fourth straight reverse this sea son however coach cusick has certainly developed a fight ing team a team that may be on saturday the lehigh soc cer team travelled to philadel phia and defeated the univer sity of perm junior varsity by a score of 1-0 very few spec tators were on hand to see the contest because of the other ac tivities going on at the same time the football team of un iversity of pennsylvania was playing an important game and the varsity soccer team was in action on the lower soccer field this did not prevent the players from exhibiting some of the prettiest snappiest toe work seen this season lehigh won the toss and took advantage of a strong wind blowing from the west by means of short fast passes the red and blue boot ers were able to keep the ball in brown and white territory for a large portion of the first quar ter the lehigh backfield was impregnable and although the ball was sifted through it a few times the stellar work of haw kins at goal prevented a score after the first quarter the le high eleven reversed the tables and kept the ball in motion dan gerously near to the enemy goal posts several shots at goal were missed by a large margin at times with no one but the goal keeper to prevent a possible marker the lehigh line faltered and the crisis was averted the brown and white fullbacks dix on and collins put up a stone wall defense and their long straight boots gave back the ball to the line almost as soon as they had lost possession of it the teamwork of both elev con on page 4 col 4 con on page 3 col 4 a beat lafayette meeting will be held by the philadelphia lehigh club on thursday eve ning november 19th at 6:30 p m at boothby's restaurant in that city at the meeting will be walter okeson treasur er of lehigh university h r bosey reiter physical direc tor ; percy assessment does include the cost of the book itself that is all seniors whose write-up appears in the senior section of the epitome receive a copy of the book without further payment for the second consecutive year a new entry won the mid dle atlantic cross country championship run when the orange clad runners of alfred university romped away with the team honors in the annual run over the vancortlandt park course qn saturday last year the garnet clad harriers of un ion carried off the honors but this year they finished a poor second to the strong alfred team the latter having the rath er remarkable score of 37 points while union had 59 counters the other teams finished in the following order rutgers third with 91 ; lafayette fourth with 94 ; n y u fifth with 108 ; le high sixth with 117 and dick inson last with 124 alfred entered the race as a dark horse and fully deserved the title as they placed five men among the first fifteen the in dividual title was also won by a wearer of the orange herrick completed the six and a fraction mile grind in the fast time of 31.29 outrunning several favor ites totten of union who fin ished second was one of these favorites for the individual title but the alfred runner crossed the finish with consid erable to spare lewis the rangy swarthmore harrier who was the individual title-holder from last year was the fav orite to repeat his feat of the previous year but the best he could do was to finish in eighth place arthur west the tall la , fayette captain was the third con on page 2 col 6 there are but two remaining games on lehigh's football sche dule for this year the annual lafayette game on saturday november 21st and the carne gie tech game on november 28th last saturday lafayette gained a rather one-sided vic tory
