playing with an offensive at tack such as this college has rarely seen and with a defen sive spirit t>at was strongest in the pinches lehigh came thru a gruelling test saturday after noon by defeating west virgin w r okeson courtesy of bethlehem globe yell the first time when he was cheered playing football for lehigh against princeton and con on page 3 col 4 prior's injury charlie prior star quar terback who was injured in the last quarter of saturday's game is confined to st luke's hospital where an examina tion disclosed a fracture of the sixth cervical vertabra of the spinal column his limbs and the lower part of his body are paralyzed but he is conscious although the injury is of a serious nature dr w l estes sr who is a specialist on cases of this kind stated yesterday that there are good prospects for prior's com plete recovery okeson honored at college meeting new developments have turn ed up concerning house party due to the untiring efforts of the committee in charge of ar rangements it was believed until this time that in the deed of gift of the taylor gymna sium there was a stipulation that this building could not be used for social affairs for this reason the committee had plan ned to use the commons and drown hall for the dances but investigation through the ad ministration office has revealed that the deed included no such statement con on page 4 col 5 through the efforts of dr carothers dean mcconn and vice-president emery permis sion was granted to the commit tee to hold the dance in taylor gymnasium this building will naturally accommodate the mer ry-makers more comfortably than either of the other build ings the gymnasium of course contributes a more dig nified atmosphere to an affair record crowd at okeson day game exceedinly rough game put up by wesleyan eleven ia wesleyan by the score of 3-0 the weather was real football weather although a little windy at times and as a result a gbod sized crowd watched the match this game was one of the im portant interactional games of the day for the wesleyan taam came here with a formidable name which was gained last year when they bea the navy and dealt syracuse its only de feat of the season add to this the fact that practically all of the members of the wesleyan team are veterans and have seen service last year and the result would seem to spell defeat for lehigh such was not the case however for the brilliant work of le high's backfield and the power of its line turned back the wes leyanites several times when a touchdown or a field goal seem ed certain lewin scored a field goal early in the first quarter the only score of the game thereafter it was anybody's game although in the last half wesleyan threatened to score several times the game was hard fought throughout and the teams were con on page 2 col 3 bond taps loyal alumnus to omicron delta kappa okeson day was celebrated saturday oct 17th by the stu dents alumni and friends of lehigh university the celebra tion marked the fiftieth birth day of the man who as le high's greatest booster has accomplished as much if not more for the good of lehigh than any other one man there is no doubt but that saturday was completely okey's day from the time that he walked into his office saturday morning to find a huge basket of flowers on his desk and the office gayly decorated until late in the evening there was nothing to be heard on the campus except talk of okey during the morning many re turning alumni stopped at the memorial building to congratu late mr okeson these scran ton and wilkes-barre alumni arrived in a body about eleven thirty a m and under cad walader evans 01 marched to the office where okey was con gratulated the students then paraded to the memorial build ing and escorted okey to the flagpole where the whole uni versity was congregated to cheer and sing okey's fame in a short speech mr okeson cotillion elects year's officers c e meet proves a great success much pep injuries fatal freshmen elect class officers policy of society outlined for the college year — frosh welcomed princeton was added to le high's soccer schedule for this year at very short notice the game was played on thursday at princeton and opened the schedule of the latter institu tion with a 3-0 win over the brown and white warriors the playing field and weather conditions were perfect and the crowd was the largest that at tended a game thus far this year it was hoped that the game might be started early to enable the lehigh team to re turn home to bethlehem in the early part of the evening but proposal that ah unlimit ed number of men be permitted to run coach kanaly wished to give the men who were un able to be out for the tryout which was held some time ago a chance to make the team two of the most prominent of these were chickering and aitken both of whom proved themselves worthy of varsity berth and will run with the team next week at the crack of the gun the runners were off they kept fairly well together for the first mile or so but gradually the bet ter runners forged ahead at numerous times one runner would pass another but for the greater part of the way the ul timate winners were in the lead con on page 4 col 4 aitken of lemgh was the first man to finish but did not figure in the scoring as he was not considered as a member of the varsity he covered the course in lehigh varsity football team travels to rutgers to en gag-e in what is expected to be one of the hardest games of the season interest in the contest is at white heat due to the fact that the game last year resulted in a 13-13 tie some students are bemoaning the fact that the game is away and that they will be unable to cheer the brown and white on to victory but to dispell these gloom clouds comes the news that the trip may be made in mack deluxe speed busses these luxurious air cushioned conveyances are brought all the way from phil adelphia and are bonded against accident busses leave coppee hall at 9 10 11 and 12 o'clock and go direct to rutgers sta dium only 25 persons are to be accommodated in each one and the price of the round trip is 4.25 if the demand war rants it canvass chairs will be con on page 4 col 4 confer with students con on page 3 col 2 lehigh was forced to accept defeat at the hands of swarth more in the first league soccer game of the season to the tune of 3-2 a strong wind blew over the upper field during the entire game giving one team a decided advantage the ball being in play at the east end of the field during the greater part of the contest the game was started early and a large crowd took advantage of this to see the game or part of it before the gridiron representatives of the brown and white went into action on the lower field swarthmore put a snappy fight ing aggregation on the field which had previously been de feated 4 goals to 1 by the hav erford varsity team the sec ond team of haverford is in the same league with swarthmore and lehigh and some idea may be had of the power of lehigh's the first meeting of the me chanical engineering society at lehigh will be held thursday evening october 29 at eight p m in the physics building the meeting will be in charge of president reynolds and the principal speaker will be mr con on page 2 col 2 on friday morning october the 18th president richards an nounced in chapel that five men were pledged to tau beta pi they were v g mcgurl j h schmidt w c widdowfield r c linck and leroy a brown president richards ex plained that this engineering so ciety had originated at lehigh university and had now after many years spread throughout the country into almost every technical university these chapters have conformed to the teociety's standards which are based on scholastic and social activities at eleven o'clock thursday morning there was a college lecture in the lehigh orpheum theatre the subject was per sonal hygiene movies illustrat ing the common social diseases were shown these motion pic tures demonstrated to the stu dent body how the personal care con on page 4 col 3 motion pictures are to be em ployed as an adjunct to the reg ular course in the metallurgy of iron and steel and other metals in the department of metallur gy at lehigh university ' the motion picture machine and can vas was bought this summer by the university the films used are those of the united states bureau of mines those produc ed by various states and those obtained from various steel com panies all dealing with one or more phases of the steel indus try the use of these films date
