in most impressive game in four years — highest score within undergraduate memory powerful machine developed at last tremendous addition to athletic facilities authorized by trustees — field has all modern equipment and plant and spacious ground future plans to be decided soon savoy theatre opened friday intramural trial decides c c team lehigh's new athletic field swordandcrescent holds fall tap difficulty in handling the ball the line easily held the drexel backs helpless and few plays fil tered through for the backfield to stop drexel was not given opportunity to show real power two weeks ago they held the powerful georgetown eleven to ascore of 22-0 due to the high wind neither team was able to use any aerial work to advan tage and kicking was extremely difficult drexey opened the game by kicking off to lehigh after an exchange of punts o'callahan made a 20-yard gain by recover ing a fumble and placed the ball on the 20-yard line mellinger then swept around left end and con on page 4 col 2 negotiations were recently undertaken by lehigh univer sity with the bethlehem steel corporation to determine wheth er the university might acquire the bethlehem steel athletic field for the use of certain of its intercollegiate sports and for the proper maintenance of its intramural athletic activities as a result of this discussion the university is happy to an nounce that at a meeting of the board of trustees held on foun der's day wednesday october 7 1925 authorization was given for the purchase of the bethle hem steel corporation's athletic field and the contiguous prop erty of the bethlehem steel cor poration at a figure which was fixed by the corporation the bethlehem steel company in seven men picked after grueling run over slip pery course fine decorations inspiring speeches mark first evening performance senior honorary society com posed of men active in various forms of cam pus leadership new bond plan for additional seats drexel game had unusual co=events laudig is captain last saturday proved to be a stormy day and especially stor my for the drexel university football team when they were swept aside to an easy victory by lehigh playing its first home game of the season the brown and white men keeping the play constantly in the zone of the drexel goal had their oppon ents continually under control and scored freely winning by a score of 38-0 using nothing but straight football lehigh ex hibited a strong attack on the offensive despite the fact that three veteran backfield men hess hayes and stephens were out of the lineup many new men were tried out and it re vealed that there is a plentiful source of material on which to base lehigh teams in the next few years o'callahan playing his sec ond game for the varsity had a big day and was a consistent ground gainer at halfback prior also played a good offensive game although he experienced weinstein elected similar idea successfully worked out by u of pitts burg and also yale interesting happenings made saturday afternoon a busy one making this sale has reserved the right for the bethlehem steel soccer team to use the field and play its full schedule for the present season it has further reserved the right for its employees to have free use of the tennis courts for two years the acquisition of this prop erty by the university affords the best and most immediate so lution of one of its most pe plexing problems the new fieid is of ample size to develop two football gridirons ; it is at pres ent superbly equipped for base ball and it has a fine brick concrete and steel stand the seating capacity of which is up wards of 4000 together with bleachers seating an additional thousand or two the perma nent stadium has been erected so that it contains a well-appointed gymnasium floor available for handball basketball and other indoor sports and it is well pro vided with lockers shower baths and other toilet facilities there are also a considerable number of basketball team con on page 2 col 5 the city of bethlehem wel comed a new motion picture theatre last friday night when the savoy on broad street was opened with appropriate cere monies the speakers were in troduced by mr howard leh man a well-kncmn bethlehem lawyer mr louis berman president of the independent pictures corporation spoke briefly on the fine points of the new thea tre and presented it to the city mayor yeakle accepted the thea tre in the name of the city congressman coyle spoke of the historical background of the site an which the theatre stands he told of how it had been used during the war for liberty loan con on page 3 col 3 the first intramural tryout for the lehigh cross country team was held on friday on the woodland farm course the team selected will meet lafay ette this friday afternoon at four thirty o'clock on the same course which is lehigh's home course at the crack of the gun at about 4 30 the runners were off and they remained buched for about the first mile and a half at the long hill behind the reser voir experience began to tell and the new men gradually fell behind however there was much passing among the run ners on the hill but the posi tions stadium and after a gruelling hour of fierce battling the lehigh frosh team emerged from the strife on the short end of a 15 to 0 score in the third quarter the lehigh yearlings had a splendid chance to score but their backfield seemed to lack the power neces sary to drive through the stiff opposition offered by the rut gers line when a touchdown on the evening of october 9 the frosh class held their first smoker of the collegiate year in drown hall the meeting was called by hebbard presi dent pro-tempore of the fresh man class the primary pur pose of the meeting was to hold elections for the coming year there was a huge gathering of the new men and sentiment seemed to be running pretty high in fact one of the notice able things of this year's fresh man class is the fine spirit and enthusiasm that they have al ready shown at previous college functions con on page 4 col 4 the first speaker of the eve ning was hebbard who told the fellows briefly for what they were assembled in drown hall mustard and cheese to have ned wayburn y m c a membership drive launched have been received many bids to produce play down town men urged to join and can do so by see ing fred trafford the inadequate size of the taylor field stadium has long been the source of trouble and worry to those officials upon whom falls the task of accom modating the thousands who ap ply for seats for the big football games it is now and has been a big problem to those most con cerned something has to be done to remedy this that much is granted the question is what is to be done this plan has been offered by one interested in the vital ques tion it is a plan which has been successfully worked by the university of pittsburg in their new stadium and by yale with their famous bowl and also oth er schools two hundred thou sand dollars would increase the student capacity of taylor field by approximately five thousand seats all these extra seats are wanted and here is one way in which the additional accommo dations may be procured bonds selling at one hundred dollars and paying an annual in terest of three percent may be offered for sale to alumni and friends the three per cent yearly interest is to be paid to the landholders either in cash far in the form of a ticket to the le high-lafayette football game con on page 3 col 2 scenario started frosh do stunts a certain amount of snappy weather is ideal for football but for the second friday in october close-to-freezing temperatures are to say the least unexpected not to say unpleasant for every one but the players saturday's game was certainly one of the coldest experienced in several years certainly those among the spectators who were sport ing new fur coats were finding them useful as well as ornamen tal and those who had neglect ed to bring overcoats along were shivering and keeping warm or trying to by long continued cheering at the end of the first half of the frosh game air the fresh men were ordered upon the field they went through a snake dance much to the amusement of the upperclassmen it was a funny sight indeed to see the frosh running all over the field adorned in bathrobes and with towels over their heads finally after five or ten minutes of this wild celebration the freshmen broke and made a dash for their seats con on page 4 col 5 the cheering throughout the frosh game was predominated by the class of 29 the mem bers of the class did their best to cheer their team to victory but succumbed to a defeat be cause they had tackled too hard an adversary during the var sity 1 game the freshmen were drive ends thursday arrangements are in the pro cess of completion to secure ned wayburn one of america's mos famous dancing masters to coach the mustard and cheese club lehigh's dramatic organ ization for a production to be given some time in april con on page 3 col 1 mr wa^burn will appear in person to pick the participants of the production this year members of his staff are coach ing the musical clubs of perm the y m c a launched its 1925 drive for membership last thursday when conspicuous signs appeared on all the cam pus bulletin boards urging each student to join the organization the drive is scheduled to last one week ending thursday oc tober 15 as this goes to press very gratifying results have been re con on page 4 col 5 business competitors for the epitome the men competing for the business staff of the lehigh epitome will meet in the burr room at 4:00 p m fri day october 16 instead of friday october 23 remem ber it is absolutely necessary that all men be present at this meeting at 8 a m on september 9 the lehigh varsity soccer team em barked for perm state to play the team which has not tasted the dregs of defeat in six years the players stayed over night at varsity hall and the various fraternities at the college the day of the game was anything but ideal and a strong cold wind accompanied by frequent snow flurries gave promise of greatly hindering play the field was inspected by the team in the morning patches of filled in ground and dirt made the sur face rather uneven for play the game was called at 1 30 p.m and a small group of spec tators braved the elements to see state undertake to keep its soc cer slate clean an extremely fast light state team took the field against the lehigh eleven which was composed of green con on page 3 col 3 the civil engineering society will hold its first meeting for the year thursday evening in the fritz engineering laboratory all civils are invited to be pres ent at this first meeting the freshmen are especially urged to attend as they will undoubt edly receive valuable informa tion which will help them in their future work all who attend will be as sured of a pleasant evening as a number of interesting events have been planned there will be a trip through the entire lab oratory the material-testing machinery with test specimens in them and also the hydraulic machinery will be run profes sor fuller has something up his sleeve in the way of entertain ment con on page 3 col 2 then will follow the contests to estimate the stresses at which the department of mathemat ics and astronomy has adopted a new policy which will come as quite a surprise to not a few students under this new pol icy there will be no further ex emptions from final examina tions in any of the mathematical and astronomical courses the mathematics department has expanded to occupy the third and fourth floor of packer hall together with the assem bly room the additions of three new members to the staff makes a total of eleven men all of whom are accesible by phone for the first time in the history of the department the astronomical division of the mathematics department is being directed
