thus only by so i doing can each of us attain to the j dignity of our citizenship to the full consciousness of duty done and to the security of individual rights and | blessed liberty the more nearly i the individual can conform his will and purpose to the will and purpose of the whole in its highest estate and ideals the greater his power for the common benefit and paradoxi cally enough the greater his inde pendence and his power to secure for himself his private rights " so fast are we fettered by the bonds of service to the one or the other of the national parties that we can determine state elections and affairs and issues that directly concern separate states only by motives and predelections and feel ings and arguments which do not belong to the issue in question and which tend to confuse it this is deplorably true in municipal affairs the misgovernment of our great cities is largely due to the fact that r&en are chosen to office and measures are adopted through the intervention of party organizations intended primarily and only rightly for national purposes citizenship consents to be shorn of its strength because of a misplaced passion for party name what true patriotic looker-on does not know from repeated experience that if the pending struggle in yonder me tropolis shall issue in the triumph of wrong it will be because despite all effort to exercise it the demon of party spirit will have held fast by clutching or cajoling them enough of men and no doubt alas ! of honest purpose to give the victory to the powers of evil the paramount question before the american people today is that which is variously designated as that of ' expansion ' imperialism or ' colonial policy ' three years ago which man of us would have said that the acquiring and con quering and governing of extra continental colonies was a fulfill ment of the purposes expresses in the preamble of the constitution ? and certainly the forces set in ption have brought results far ond our conception at that time the scope of the constitutional purpose would such a policy have then been considered as the purpose to form a more perfect union to establish justice to secure domestic tranquility ? to provide for the common defence to promote general welfare ? or to establish the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity i cannot find in all the purposes ofj the constitution that such a course of empire was intended by those who formed the great law for the | people and their posterity but i must recognize that it was their in tention and has ever been the intention of the american people to regard or to make their consti tution adequate to all exigencies " in profession and i feel sure in deepest purpose america has hitherto tenaciously clung to the doctrine that the moral condition of nations was not that of war and in our relations of peace with nations are we to be sure that a bargain is always onesided if the men of america are deeply imbued with the motives which led to the ordaining of their constitution will they not resolve to adopt in all foreign relations the code of ethics which controls the mutual conduct of honorable men " if as in hooker's eulogy the seat of law is the bosom of god " the absence of law or anarchy must find its source in the lowest depths and the spirit there bred is horrid it moves the stealthy as sassin it infuriates the lynching mob the briber and the bribed obey its whisperings and the man who lightly treats the oath with which he entered upon public ser vice — these one and all are child " weightier burdens than these surely have never before been laid upon a nation but the going century has left us many besides — the problem of organized labor in the modern industrial structure of city government which the publicist gneist once prophesied would destroy our republic questions of party organization so necessary but so fraught with danger when led by craft or self-seeking ; of differences of race ; of the wise use of individual and national prosperity of the perfecting of a simple money system to meet complex needs ; of the yoking of crudeness and culture and of rich and poor continued on third page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday october 11 1901 vol ix founder's day founder's day sports sophomores victorious winning base ball and foot ball games calendar saturday oct 12 — foot ball le high vs princeton at princeton foot ball lehigh scrub vs hill school at pottstown at 7.30 p.m v m c a re ception to freshmen in christmas hall sunday oct 13 — at 9.30 a.m bible study class in christmas hall . at 2.30 p.m — meeting of min strel association at theta delta chi house at 6.15 p.m meeting of chris tian association in christmas hall monday oct 14 at 4.00 p.m foot ball practice notice notices the interclass handicap track and field meet has been postponed from oct 19 to oct 23 no 5
