bethlehem pa friday june 5 1925 price ten cents large number of grads return for annual alumni festivities largest graduating class in history to receive degrees vol xxxii no 59 baseball team again wins maroon series lacrosse team has successful season defeats were by close scores and victories one-sided defeats lafayette in deciding game by close score on taylor field notice seniors all seniors are requested to get their tickets for admis sion of friends and families to graduation exercises at the supply bureau as soon as possible many coming from distant places to join in class reunions two full days of activity in store for returning sons toronto here today approximately two hundred to be conferred at exercises on tuesday morning — class day ceremonies monday afternoon review of the season new honorary frat installed here complete program for commencement xi chapter of omicron delta kappa is established at lehigh has two-fold purpose class of 75 will be guests of honor alumni day this year will be featured by the of 13 classes ranging ffom the class of 1875 to the class of 1924 the former will hold its 50 year reunion and of the six surviving members four are ex pected to return to the campus for their golden anniversary celebration prominent among them is professor e h wil liams who for many years after his graduation at lehigh was professor of mining engineer ing and geology here another george f koegler tablet ora tion by allen c dußois last roll call by laurence b king ham and ivy oration by allison l bayles the singing of the alma mater will mark the close of these exercises the band will render various marches during the afternoon con on page 2 col 6 at 8 p m the president will give a formal reception to the members of the graduating class and their families the trustees alumni faculty and instructions for formal exercises sword and crescent elects new members fifteen juniors who have shown most interest in lehigh chosen 1 monies all important details for sun day's and tuesday's cere activities listed ticket regulations prominent figure in the 75 del egation is commander clement biddle of the u s navy the others from whom acceptances have been received are j h evans of philadelphia and j pollock of new york city the class of 75 will be the guests of honor at the alumni banquet which will open the alumni fes tivities for the week-end at the hotel bethlehem tonight at 7.00 the dinner will be entirely in formal members of the faculty and members of the graduating class are invited to attend tick ets may be purchased at the desk at the hotel bethlehem just prior to the dinner con on page 4 col 4 of the other classes which will hold reunions this year probably the most elaborate will be those of the classes of 95 10 15 and 20 the 30 year class has reserved the northampton country club as their headquarters and are planning to assemble there for a golf tournament friday morning the outstanding fea ture of the 95 reunion is the 1 unusual number of men who are traveling considerable dis tances to be present some are coming from england one from porto rico one from canada one from alaska and one from texas a total of 24,000 miles which will be covered by these men to participate in their 30 year celebration the reunion of the class of 1910 has been arranged by mr caleb kenney of bethlehem and the details have been well mapped out the class will appear in elab orate costumes and will present a stunt at the dinner on fri iday night that should be a calculus cremation to be held again ! at the final college meeting of the year held on friday may 22 the annual tapping of the new members of the sword and crescent society took place each year this society selects fifteen men from the junior class who have been the most active in their first three years in college and who have done the most for lehigh election to this society is considered one of the highest honors that a man can receive at lehigh and i its members are the leaders in | practically all the activities on the campus a new method of tapping the candidates was adopted when the entire junior ! class was arranged in a single line forming a two years lapse this tradi tional lehigh event will take place on lower field this eve ning at 10 o'clock and all indi cations are that it will be a note worthy event the calculus cremation com mittee composed of r a har rier j j frey and j e shurt leff are laboring under some what of a handicap insofar as they have never witnessed a calculus cremation at lehigh however plans have been laid according to the hand-me-down order of things at cremation to gether with several innovations and a distinctly new wrinkle as far as the actual plot is con cerned this plot deals with a current } phase of lehigh that is sure to con on page 3 col 5 con on page 2 col 5 for the second consecutive year the brown and white dia mond artists emerged victorious in the annual series with the rivals from down the river this year the maroon batsmen won the first game six to four ion taylor field but lost the sec ond battle on their own diamond by a nine to five score the de ciding game was played here and the final figures read six to five in favor of the home nine the first two games of the series were more or less one sided and uneventful but this third game was a true thriller from the very start lafayette was the first to en ter the scoring columns when berry hit a long fly over the fence with ernst on first as the result of a pass the latter scored lafayette's third run when he pasted the ball over the fence for the second home run of the game while all this was going on lehigh had men on bases in every inning but was unable to score the big sixth inning was the turning point ol the game the home aggregation scoring five counters in this frame hess started the fun when con on page 3 col 2 con on page 4 col 6 sunday may 24 marked the installation of a new honorary fraternity at lehigh when the xi chapter of omicron delta kappa a national honorary fra ternity was established the purpose of this fraternity is two-fold first it serves as a reward for a man who has done outstanding work and proved himself a leader in one of the five branches of collegiate acti vity — scholarship athletics so cial leadership i*on-athletic ac tivities other than publications and publications the second purpose is to serve as a connect ing link between students alum ni and faculty the constitu tion provides for this latter pur pose since its membership in cludes a maximum of four fac even though lehigh did not annex any championship honors in the old indian game the sea son can be considered one which was fairly successful the team was handicapped by a poorly ar ranged schedule which did not give them an opportunity for playing on the home loam for over a month in midseason a brief summary of the season shows close defeats at the hands of syracuse hopkins maryland and mt washington the vic tories were garnered over stev ens swarthmore and perm all by substantial margins it was planned to open the season with yale but the latter cancelled the game because they had not had sufficient practice this made the lid-lifter with syracuse international cham pions of the previous year and with virtually the same team this year they had also seen action in two previous contests in spite of this the final score was only 4-2 against the brown and white the first half score was even at two goals apiece but the visitors forged ahead in the second half stevens was the first league opponent and the home team came through with flying colors con on page 3 col 3 at the fifty-seventh com mencement exercises which take place from sunday until tuesday inclusive the largest graduating class in the history of lehigh will receive degrees the exercises will be formally opened with an academic pro cession from the alumni mem orial building to the packer memorial chapel on sunday morning at 10:45 the bac calaureate sermon will be deliv ered in the chapel by the rt rev thomas campbell darst of east carolina in the afternoon an innova tion will take place in the form of an informal gathering in the faculty room of the alumni memorial building where the students and their parents will have an opportunity to meet the members of the faculty and their wives in addition this affair will permit the students and visitors to enjoy the exhibi tion of paintings on display in this room this exhibition in cludes works of many of the best known artists of the pres ent day and was made possible through the efforts of mr emil gelhaar formerly of the facul ty of lehigh and mr howard leach librarian on monday afternoon the class day exercises take place on the campus these exer cises will be opened with a march by the university band the order of events on the pro gram for these ceremonies are president's salutatory by e l kirchner president of the grad uating class ; class poem by les lie c wolcott class prophecy by frederick b dorton and important business transacted by b of c awards in spring sports and several appointments are made other matters acted upon formations the teaching staff and mem bers of the graduating class will meet on the plaza west of memorial hall at 10:30 a m on sunday and tuesday with caps gowns and hoods properly adjusted in case of heavy rain assemble in the chapel how academic costume is worn 1 degree gowns are not to be closed in front they are kept in place by the tie strings which are brought forward over the shoulders carried back under the respective arms and tied in jthe back without crossing in front the hooks in the back of men's gowns are intended to catch over the collar of the coat 2 caps are worn by candi dates for degree's with the tas sel at the right by holders with the tassel at the left caps are removed during prayer 3 the cord on the neck strap of the hood is intended to fas ten to a button on the waistcoat the middle cord in the lining is then looped over the buttons formation for procession baccalaureate sunday faculty members and candi dates for degrees will find mark ers
