and tru shel struck up hail to lehigh and the seniors piled into an ex cellent dinner all the lehigh songs on the list were sung with a will be tween the soup and demi-tasse in addition to a few that don't appear in the song book the banquet was strictly a closed af fair and was entirely informal there being no speaker's table nor any guests alumni see frosh track squad to meet n y u frosh class have nominations for new officers lehigh-lafayette frosh meet called off — relay arrang ed with new york retary okeson and assistant secretary buchanan were the only two present who were not members of the graduating class after the meal had been dis patched the tables were cleared away and the crowd gathered around a semi-circle to watch some feats of legerdemain by harry su assisted by buck okey was then called on for a few remarks and the seniors were pleasantly surprised to find that they were not called together to undergo a touch for pledges to the endowment fund etc but simply to assem ble for the last time around the festive board to enjoy them selves and to learn something of the organization of the class ne cessary for the proper conduct of their activities in the future as alumni okey's talk was inspiring and unique in that he succeeded to a remarkable ex tent in putting into words the intangible sentiment that we con on page 3 col 4 by playing errorless baseball while facing the ursinus team last wednesday afternoon le high was able to roll up an ov erwhelming 11-1 score though the brown and white players demonstrated their superiority in every trip to bat it was the ragged fielding and five errors of the ursinus team which con tributed materially to the size of the score during the seven innings in which he held the mound walk er had no trouble in keeping the visitors away from a score in fact moyer's scratch single in the fourth inning was the only hit of the first seven rounds in the first third fifth sixth seventh and eighth innings only three visiting bats men faced the brown and white hurlers it was only in the sec ond and ninth when watson was twirling that ursinus was able to put a man on second or advance one beyond that point until they staged a spirited try outs held plan to have athletic repre resentative a non-athlete regardless of custom racquet wielders to meet george washington today lehigh nine to cross bats again with lafayette elections today - journey to rutgers for inter collegiate tournament the next day adams and dv bois both out but first victory is expected bright outlook game away '■in bringing back the old cal culus cremations the sopho more class is renewing an an nual event which in former years was one of the most pop ular and entertaining occur rences of the year the crema tions were once so popular that they were attended by crowds of several thousand people the event is run in connection with the alumni festivities when the grads are happily reminded of their struggles with calculus and remember the professors who are being impersonated con on page 4 col 2 the cremation takes the form of a trial in which calculus is tried and found undeniably guilty and burned at the stake the trial takes place at night on lower field which is flooded with arc lights the characters ap pear one by one from all corn ers of the field and when they have all appeared the stage is converted into a courtroom in which all of the court officials witnesses and attorneys are gathered the trial proceeds and in the course of time cal culus is convicted and the action is then carried to upper field where his effigy is burned the participants in the trial are largely the impersonators of the well-known professors about college and the mannerisms and habits of those men are clever ly played upon by the actors - the cremation this year is to take place at 10 p m of the night of june fifth following the alumni banquet even though plans are rapidly nearing completion for the great bach festival to be held in the le high packer chapel may 29 and 30 this year possibly owing to the fact that the festi val was not held last year be cause of dr wolle's illness there has been a greater de mand than ever before for tick ets only a few days after the sale of seats was thrown open to the public they were all sold the management regrets very much that it could not acco modate all who wished to come to the festival but the seating capacity of the chapel reached its limit when 1250 tickets were sold however tickets may be had for the grand rehearsal with the members of the phil adelphia symphony orchestra on may 28 these may be ob tained after may 19 at the of fice of h j schneller secre tary of the bach association in the wilbur trust building for one dollar con on page 4 col 2 as the b minor mass was re hearsed so much for the wash ington international conference on peace through music the choir has been devoting its attention is called to the fol lowing notice of mrs catherine drinker bowen's history of lehigh university which was published first in serial num bers in the alumni bulletin and then as a book by the bul letin copies can be had at the university t supply bureau or at the alumni rooms in alumni memorial hall and it would be wise to secure a copy before the edition is exhausted the book is sold at cost 1 per copy and every lehigh man should have it with its cers of next year's sophomore class took place wednesday of this week the thirteenth in the chapel the election will be held today con on page 4 col 4 before the nominations be gan koegler addressed the class for a few minutes concern ing the election of athletic rep resentatives the custom in the past has been usually to put an athlete in that position but that plan has many disadvantages the representatives are often pi delta epsilon pledges new men lacrossers to meet mt washington high honorary journalistic society initiation next week brown and white team to have full strength with exception of morgan active on campus at baltimore two lecture sermons to be given by british statesman honorable p w wilson cambridge graduate statesman author editor and mathema tician to deliver lectures to student body after successfully defeating the lacrosse team from swarth more last saturday afternoon the lehigh stick wielders are all set for another victory this coming saturday when they meet the strong mount wash ington club aggregation at bal timore this team has played some of the best twelves in the country and only recently de feated princeton by the score of 4-2 due to his injury received in the swarthmore game si mor gan will probably not be able to start in the contest but with this exception it is expected that the brown and white team will have its full strength a victory at this time of the sea con on page 4 col 5 to-day the netmen from george washington will invade south mountain in an endeavor to avenge their defeat of last week at the hands of the brown and white racquet wielders though they were overwhelmed by an bto 1 score last friday they are coming up here brimful of confidence and with a team rejuvenated by their splendid showing in the southern divi sion of the middle atlantic in tercollegiate tournament baum of george washington who was defeated by lawall last week won the individual champion ship and the entire team seem ed to display a different brand of tennis that shown the lehigh team the team that will represent lehigh on the courts this fri day will be composed of cap tain lawall koegler miller hagenbuch liversidge and doty these men are all in the best of condition and feel sure of repeating their victory the afternoon should bring out some very interesting matches par ticularly the one between la wall and baum con on page 4 col 2 on saturday the team will go down to rutgers to play through the first round of the northern division of the middle atlantic intercollegiate tourna ment this tournament was won last year by the lehigh netmen fritz mercur won the individual after successfully defeating ursinus in a very well played game at taylor stadium last wednesday afternoon the brown and white baseball nine is busy preparing to meet their ancient rivals lafayette at easton this saturday the team is out to avenge the de feat handed them by the ma roon in last saturday's fracas at bethlehem and according to the improvement shown in the ursinus game the lehigh nine will offer the stiffest of opposi tion it is expected that dixie walker who pitched so well in the ursinus game will assume the hurling duties for the brown and white as pete dv bois and captain bob adams have been on the sick list for the past week honey lewin is back in the game again altho he is still somewhat handicap ped by his injured finger yeisley will probably again do the hurling for lafayette with captain ernst at the re ceiving end . the probable line-up is as follows : lehigh lafayette hayes rf mcgarvey rf adams cf halstead ed the house of commons as a member of parliament for a london constituency he has written several books on religious subjects and has been thanked by the heads of nations for his services in pro moting good relations between the old world and the new matics was also the editor of the granta the cambridge under - graduate paper and should prove an interesting speaker to the student body of lehigh he joined the staff of the london daily news of which paper he was successively as sistant editor parliamentary correspondent and special cor on thursday the lehigh chapter of pi delta epsilon na tional journalistic and literary fraternity pledged their pros pective new material for the homing initiation which will in all probability he held thurs day of next week the men pledged are juniors and seniors who for eligibility for member ship in pi delt have been suc cessful in journalistic work on the college publications and in other college activities the pledging was done during
