igoi vs 1902 the deciding game for the pos sesion of the inter-class baseball cup will be held wednesday after noon at 2.30 on lehigh field the economic society graduate coaches the first regular meeting of the economic society will be held in saucon hall at 7.30 p m on tuesday oct 81st instead of on the 24th instant prof stewart will speak on " england and the boers university lecture the second lecture in the series on social problems will be given on eriday morning in the physical laboratory at 11.30 o'clock w h tolman ph d of new york will deliver this one his subject being " practical philanthropy in new york mechanical engineering society new york university was clearly outclassed in saturday's game ; in fact their team made but two first-downs lehigh's eleven on the other hand had no dif ficulty in carrying the ball down the field scoring four touchdowns in the first half and five in the second lehigh's interference was good and her backs displayed great ability in gaining ground and running the ball up from kicks an account of the game follows : at the kick-off james sent the ball over the line and n y u kicked from their twenty five-yard line but chamberlain and eeese by successive runs worked . the ball to the eight-yard line where new york secured it on a fumble the ball was again fumbled van duyne fell on it on new york's twenty-five-yard line and on the next play james went around right end for a touchdown the kick out was blocked on tl c kick-off lindley ran the ball thirty yards chamberlain eeese and gledhill made five yards 1 ii and then by short gains the was brought to new york's en-yard line where it was lost on a tumble after new york had advanced the ball ten yards and had received ten yards for off side play lehigh got the ball for holding and chamberlain carried it over after runs by keese lindlev and gledhill the goal - missed on the line-up after the next kick-off lindley punted forty yards new york lost the ball on downs gledhill made fifteen yards and reese twelve the ball changed is twice on fumbles reese made fifteen yards on an end play and chamberlain plunged over line james failed to kick goal new york kicked off to chamberlain lindley punted thirty yards twidey fumbled the ball and bray fell on it reese made twenty yards gledhill three and reese eight more lindley then took it over and james kicked goal new york kicked off again and after an exchange of punts time was called with the ball in lehigh's possession on her fifty yard line score 21to 0 in the second half after the kick-off lindley made a long run van duyne blocked an attempt to return a punt and gledhill fell on the ball on the next line-up seese went around left end forty yards for a touchdown from which james kicked goal new york kicked oft again secured the ball on a blocked kick and tried a drop for goal but lindley the first regular meeting of the mechanical engineering society will be held in packer hall on friday nov 3 at 7 o'clock p m instructor trowbridge will present a paper upon " the supervision and management of marine boilers and engines the first meeting of the civil engineering society was held last thursday evening in packer hall and the interest manifested augurs well for the success oi the society during the ensuing year the society was called to order at 7.30 by shultz 00 and after the trans action of some routine business the chair announced professor merriman who gave a very inter esting talk on " the history and object of the society he said in part : • " upon coming here twenty-one years ago i inquired of the janitor the location of the civil engineer ing department and was shown two rooms — one of them oh the third floor prof williams present room and the other dr miller's room on the fourth floor in the latter i noticed a large stack of books and papers which upon in quiry i found belonged to the civil engineering society this was my first acquaintance with it it " r as founded in 1872 and had a very successful career for five years when interest relaxed and it was abolished its records books and papers being placed in the library nothing was done in regard to it during the next four years until 1881 when upon call ing the attention of the class of 82 to it the society was once more established but following the course of almost all college organizations five years later again found the society on the verge of disbandment due in a great mea ure to the formation of the chemical architectural min ing and other clubs previously all students met at the society's meetings but now there were only a few ; and to preserve the society it was decided to iorm a general engineering society composed of the civil and mechanical sections in this state it has existed ever since in 1885 the society decided to issue a publication in which all kinds of engineering topics were to be discussed and to this end " the engineering journal of lehigh university was established in it appeared the various papers read at the meetings articles from alumni reports upon recent engin eering constructions etc and altogether was a very successful paper in 1890 publication was suspended but during the next year " the lehigh quarterly " was founded to take its place this followed the fate of its pred ecessor in 1894 and nothing has since been done in this direction so much for the history ;
