before a large attendance at new york university on friday even ing lehigh suffered defeat at the hands of the new york team in the annual indoor gymnastic con test new york winning by a score of 51 to 21 points in the preliminary practice lau benstein 01 fell from the horizontal bar and was so badly injured that he could not continue in the con test belcher 00 did the best all around work for new york and reamer for lehigh the student is he who loves knowledge more than facts who strives for truth for its own sake who aspires to manhood rather than to success he sets before himself no mean standard of attain ment he goes to college to find not a nursery but a workshop he finds his inspiration not outside of himself merely but within himself and with high-minded unflagging zeal he employs his every energy to become first of all a man the contest was not as one sided as the score might lead one to be lieve and most of the events were hotly contested after the contest the members of the team and visiting lehigh men were royally entertained by new york at a dance given in the gym nasium the summary of the different events were as follows : horizontal bar — won by belcher n y u ; tie for second place between m l berrey n y u and j j reamer lehigh won by reamer on a second trial fence vault won by w t drake lehigh s s jones n y u and c e meder lehigh tie for second and third places ; height 6 feet 10 inches parallel bars wfcm by f j belcher n y u j c herrmann n y u and j j reamer lehigh third high jump — won by s s jones n y u ; 5 feet 7 inches w f irwin n y u 5 feet 4 inches second and w t drake lehigh third 5 feet flying rings — won by f j belcher n y u ; a j keene n y u second f w parsons lehigh third club swinging — won by h n me cracken n y u ; t m bedwin n y u being no quorum at the meeting of the electrical engineer ing society thursday night those present adjourned for two weeks when the paper mr tiehe was to have presented will be read paul m paine 91 c e is now associate editor of the syracuse post standard during the late war he was ist sergeant of co a 23rd n y v he was engaged from 91 to 94 on the engineer corps of the philadelphia division pennsylvania railroad and since that time has been engaged in newspaper work on the philadel phia press as reporter and the syracuse post as exchange and associate editor w c shoemmaker 90 is now assistant superintendent of the cincinnati hamilton and dayton railroad at lima ohio where he has been since 95 he has been with that road since 1892 as assist ant engineer of surveys in the maintenance of way department in the transportation department and as chief clerk in the office of which he now is assistant superintendent the work of lehigh's dramatic club is now well under way and there is every indication that their thirteenth annual performance will be a success efforts are being made to secure a trio of attractions at the time of the production and it is probable that a cotillion dance baseball game and the performance will be given during the week fol lowing easter the management regrets that it has been impossible to secure the services of mr r c chamberlin the popular coach for the productions of the past two years mr james l daly the coach for several productions of the mustard and cheese in former years and mr george h trader stage director for a m palmer are among those being considered for the position the play a three-act farce-com edy by a w frazier entitled a modern ananias is a combination of humorous situations and witty conversations and is considered far ahead of anything in this line ever before undertaken the cast num bers eight four of which are female characters and is composed mostly of new men there being but three mustard and cheese members who contemplate taking part the lead ing female part will be well por trayed by the former " gutta percha girl mr johns mr roebling president of the organization will have a part that is quite a contrast to his last year's character of the mother-in-law it is possible that mr whitridge the musical director of the organization will participate under a feminine role the work of the new men is very satisfactory and stage manager girdler has ex pressed an opinion that the produc tion will be far in advance of prev ious ones the mustard and cheese is an old organization and has al ways succeeded in putting on a creditable production whether in farce-comedy or dramatics on a large scale and with the support of the present undergraduates the play can be made a success in every way there will be a special advance sale of tickets for the con venience of students at the university of california the electives are divided into groups and the student choosing an elective must the pittsburg bridge company for the central states has occupied his present position since 97 previous to that time from the date of his graduation he was engaged in various lines of bridge and construction work throughout the united states and canada ralph p barnard 89 of the law firm of barnard & johnson of washington d c after graduating from lehigh was engaged for some time at washington under the u s geological survey he studie law at georgetown and graduated in 1892 he was admitted to the bar the next year in 1898 he was appointed paymaster in the army and was stationed in new york city in november 99 he entered into a law partnership with guy a johnson of washington d c the eighth annual contest of the pennsylvania intercollegiate oratorical union was held in bom berger memorial hall at ursinus college on friday evening lehigh was represented by charles w startsman 01 who notwithstand ing the fact that he was not awarded a prize did excellent work and delivered one
