notice to seniors the alumni association has de cided to make special effoits to in terest the graduating classes im mediately upon graduation to this end a local committee has been appointed to arouse interest on the part of ninety-six in the exercises of alumni day the local com mittee desires to have the name of each man who will attend all who expect to attend the banquet in the gymnasium are requested to so inform either george a jen kins 70 of south bethlehem or j w thurston of the class either personally or by card but imme diately r e lara my president wilkes-barre trip on saturday the junior civils under professor merriman and in structor hoffman visited the filter plant erected by the morison jewell filtration company for the wilkes barre water company the plant is situated about six miles northeast of the city the supply is drawn by gravity from a 2,000*000,000 gallon reservoir cov ering 100 acres owing to the condition of the water due in part to the surface soil not having been removed the company was com pelled by city legislation to filter the supply the unfiltered water is strained before entering the settling tanks in the latter vessels the coagulant basic sulphate of alumina is added the water then passes through the filter tanks and is collected in a reservoir below the plant the plant is provided with four settling tanks and 20 filter tanks with a daily capacity of 10,000,000 gallons the members of the party are under many obligations for the courteous attention tendered them by general manager lance 72 and to superintendent roger mc garry who accompanied them to the plant and fully explained its details resolutions at a meeting of the senior class of the lehigh university held may 30 1896 to take action on the death of arthur y shepherd the following resolutions were unani mously adopted : resolved that in the death of ar thur yeager shepherd the univer sity has lost a conscientious worker and we the members of the senior class a true friend and classmate whose sudden death we most sin cerely mourn resolved that we appreciating the great loss to his family do ex tend to them our most heartfelt sympathy resolved that these resolutions be published in the college papers and that a copy be engrossed and delivered to his family george a buvinger hasell w baldwin j gordon mason homer a reed henry shriver jr committee arthur yeager shepherd of the mechanical engineering section of the class of 96 died of pneumonia in st luke's hospital at 9.25 o'clock friday night aged 21 years 9 months and ly days the de ceased had been ill only since last sunday he was the son of mr and mrs william ii shepherd of wilkes-barre who were present together with his brothers and sis ters at his bedside mr and mrs shepherd were on a trip through the far west and were in denver col when the news of their son's illness reached them the body was shipped to wilkes-barre on the 10.45 lehigh valley train on sat urday morning and funeral services will be held at 8.80 o'clock this afternoon in that city baseball lehigh 4 lafayette 5 lafayette men are great believers in lehigh luck in order to provide for this contingency they secured the services of an umpire who most effectually eliminated the fac tor of luck from the saturday game while no one believes that lafayette had anything to do with the umpire's decisions yet it would be well if they would exercise more care in their choice of that functionary lehigh may have the satisfaction of knowing that after being badly beaten in the first two games she was able to put into the field a team which was more than a match for the lafayette athletes from a spectator's standpoint the game was the most exciting one of the season lafayette started by making one run on rothermel's hit a base on balls and an error lehigh scored three runs in her half on a base on balls an error and two pretty singles goose eggs were the order of the game after this until the seventh when lafayette secured one unearned run the excitement began in the ninth driesbaclu flied out to senior rothermel followed with a hit to senior who retired him in short order at first things began to look bright and the crowd looked toward the exit but sigman raised the drooping hearts of the kastonians by a single and a minute after barclay sent them up with a bound by a three bagger which brought in sigman wallbridge filed out to carman leaving the score tied lehigh again failed to score in came lafayette resolved to do or die lauer went cheerfully to base on balls reese hit to grace who retired him by a brilliant stop clark here made his first hit at a most opportune moment for lauer who had gotten to third came home saxton struck out but dreisbach with a pretty single brought in clark rothermel hit to gannon and was retired at first carman then went to bat for lehigh and hit for one base sny der bunted beautifully and reached first all right for dreisbach threw clear over lauer's head and car man scored snyder going to third e grace flied out to barclay senior hit to rothermel and sny der came home but the umpire called him out w grace was re tired on a hit to wallbridge the
