notices the university athletic commit tee will meet for organisation on saturday next at 2 p m at the office of eobert h sayre esq south bethlehem the presence of every member is earnestly de sired 11 s drinker secretary committee on college administration the preliminary contest to select a man to represent lehigh at the meeting of the state intercollegiate oratorical union at lancaster in march will be held on saturday feb 28 in the chapel the com mittee is : laramy 96 hess 96 and hood 97 the lehigh university glee and banjo clubs will give a concert saturday evening feb 2 at the fountain hill opera house tickets can be bought on and after wed nesday jan 23 from any member of the glee and banjo clubs the business manager and the assistant business manager these tickets will be redeemable for the regular seats at nickum's drugstore beth lehem and jacoby's drugstore south bethlehem on and after wednesday jan 30 prices 75 > 50 and 35 cents j w thurston manager supply bureau roster the hours at which the supply bureau will be open are : monday 9.30 to 10.30 11.30 to 12.45 tuesday 11.30 to 12.45 wednesday 11.30 to 12.45 thursday 8.30 to 10.30 friday 8.30 to 10.30 saturday 8.30 to , 9,30 open every day at 12.30 and from 1.30 to 2 p m mr coxe's lecture the first of the new course a e kennelly the honorable eckley b coxe a distinguished member of the board of trustees of the university and president of the american society of mechanical engineers will at the invitation of the faculty give the first of a course of lectures at 11.30 a m friday in the lecture room of the physical laboratory all members of the senior and junior classes are required to attend their other recitations for that hour being omitted a list of seate assigned to them is posted in packer hall the general public is invited to attend the lecture the subject will not be announced in advance it is not often that the college man has the opportunity of listen ing to two such eminent men as mr coxe and mr kennelly each is in his own profession an author ity mr coxe is too well know about the university to require any particular mention ; he will with out doubt be listened to eagerly mr a b kennelly is not so well known here although in the elec trical world he is pre-eminent he is an authority on alternating cur rents and stands in the foremost rank of electrical scientists he has had a wide experience includ ing almost all branches of electrical engineering last march mr ken nelly left the edison laboratory where he had been chief electrician to become junior member of the firm of houston & kennelly elec trical experts mr kennelly is vice president of the american institute of elec trical engineers before which he has read several very important papers he has also written two books — one practical notes for students and a later one the theoretical elements of electro dynamic machinery tjhe subject he has chosen for his lecture " alternate current motors synchronous and non-syiv chronous is one which is of im portance today to every engineer and is one which he is well pre pared to discuss the college men will find it to their interest to at tend a washington club organized the lehigh men from washing ton met in the kuglish room in packer hall on tuesday at 12.30 o'clock oallaghan as chairman stat ed that the object of the meeting was to form a washington club a committee was appointed to draft a constitution and the date of the next meeting was decided upon the meeting then adjourned + dr moyer 91 spent sunday in bethlehem engineering society the engineering society held its first meeting for the term monday evening in the examination hall physical laboratory owing to the absence of the editor-in-chief of the quarterly board the discussion of business relating to the proposed journal was postponed until thurs day evening january 31 the vacancy on the board due to the failure of beeler 96 to return to college will then be filled president keim then read before the meeting a letter from the com mittee having in charge the fitting up of the large room in christmas hall as a students gathering place the society was invited to aid in the work and was promised the use of the room for its meetings this would be once in two weeks and would not interfere with the other uses for which the room is intended a committee of three was appointed to look the matter up and report at the next regular meeting other new business trans acted was the election of ten new members cunningham 96 in a paper ex hibiting much care discussed the subject of mining and preparation of coal beginning with a des cription of a coal basin and classifi cation of coal he explained the different methods of prospecting laying special stress on the diamond drill methods of opening a vein and the means of ventilation and drainage of mines were fully dis cussed surface and underground mining were considered and the methods of hauling the coal to the bottom of the slope the different stages of preparation of the coal and the ways of sizing it were illus trated by diagrams and blue prints he pointed out many places where economy is necessary and also ex plained how automatic machinery is replacing hand labor through out the entire discussion much valuable data was supplied which together with the numerous sketches and specimens of rocks etc shown made the talk an instructive one after thanking mr cunningham for his paper the society adjourned ♦ james g beach formerly of le high university has entered the class of 96 as a student in archi tectural engineering — the illini university of illinois at its last meeting the sociedad ilispano americano de lehigh elected the following officers pre sident mora ; vice president le fevre ; secretary j obaldia ; treas urer mercenario ; assistant secre tary f gallardo ; assistant treas urer j galan electrical engineer ing society one of the best attended meet ings of the society was called to order last tuesday evening by president brown in the physical laboratory hall after roll call by the secretary the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved hall 96 flory 96 and trafton 96 were elected to full membership and clinton 97 jenks 97 mac knight 97 and yates 97 to associate membership a communication was read in regard to the furnishing of the room in christmas hall asking the aid of the society in this enter prise de huff 95 moved that a committee be appointed to look into the matter and report at the next meeting of the society carried the president appointed de huff 95 irvine 95 and adams 96 on the committee he then made a few remarks in regard to the lecture next saturday even ing at 8 p m by a e kennelly and urged all the members to be present at that time ;
