bedlam follows lehigh freshman start to tug at the be ginning of the annual lafayette tug of war immediately after this picture was taken bedlam broke loose as both sides ran throughout the field destroying goalposts and flagpoles because of a wild free-for-all be tween lafayette and lehigh fresh men friday afternooa at lafayette's fisher field a lafayette dean has warned as far as we're concerned the tug of war between the fresh men of the two colleges will be discontinued the rope pull traditionally held during the halftime of the laf ayette-lehigh freshmen foot ball game was scheduled for friday afternoon it never ma terializedi instead a pitched battle between several hundred students erupted resulting in the complete destruction of both goal posts two flagpoles and a baseball scoreboard a crab apple fight as well as hand-to-hand combat were also a part of the halftime show most severe casualty of the after noon was david reimers a lafay ette freshman knocked down by a falling scoreboard and carried off the field on a stretcher by the eas ton emergency squad although he was in pain hospital x-rays indi cated that no bones had been broken dr gilbert hartoule assist ant dean of students at lafay ette who warned that the tug might be discontinued called the affair a disgraceful ex hibition he noted that mem bers of lafayette's sophomore honorary calumet were pres ent and felt that there should have been a similar supervisory group from lehigh cyanide present hartoule added that he was sure that after conferring with lehigh officials they will be in agree ment with our recommendation lehigh dean of students j d leith told the b&w that the incident had not been officially reported to him as of saturday and refused com ment the sequence of events at the half-time read like a comic opera at the start of the tug-of see leopard page 9 mozart's seraglio warmly received by william r brainerd the turnau opera company brought to the lehigh campus last friday an evening of fresh and exciting entertainment coming from new york the nine members of the troupe — six actors two stage man agers piano accompanist — were with the exception of the last all quite young their visit from radio interview to evening performance to re ception afterward was marked with an enthusiasm and cooperative ness which made hosting them ? pleasure for students die entfuhrung aus dem serail no matter how it is performed in some way manages to penetrate to the listener's ear with its excellence fortunately there were few obstacles in the path of acoreciatine the work friday evening in grace hall it was sung in english in language which was easy to follow and not like some editions of libretti which employ stilted phrases performing without an orchestra the artists were instead accom panied by pianist frederic popper director of an opera company of his own regretfully mozart tran arcadians schedule meeting for tomorrow arcadia will meet tomorrow night at 7:30 in the arcadia room of the university center the meeting is open to all interested students seven juniors — including one present member of arcadia — received appointments to the student council this week all of the exltra-curricular activity groups designated to appoint student legislators with the exception of residence halls council have submitted names of appointees arcadia elections chairman john roglieri 60 announced yesterday representing ifc will be robert paternoster town council morris kelsey music organizations joseph pittenger drama-debate orlin liv dahl philip mezey honorary organizations ed watters religious groups and alfred johanson publications rhc delinquent in its action will meet thursday evening to elect its arcadia representative its action will conclude the first phase of the selection of the new student coun cil to take office next semester pittenger is the only carry over from the current student council having served for the past several weeks replacing former arcadian william clarke an additional seven members of the 14th arcadia will be elected by student vote on december 7-9 pe titions for those interested in run ning in the general election are cur rently available at the student activities office they must be turned back to the office by friday at 4 p.m with the signatures of one per cent of the student body — 28 students — on them a meeting of all candidates will be held in the uni versity center at 4 p.m on friday b&w epitome cop first prizes the brown and white and epitome both copped first place awards in pi delta epsilon's publi cations contest in the university center over the weekend for both publications it was the second consecutive award the yearbook and newspaper were also first in their class two years ago at the last pi delt convention in the enrollment class of 2,500 see paper page 4 the rev joseph t clark will be guest speaker at the 17th confer ence on religion sponsored by the interfaith council father clark assistant professor of philosophy at canisius college will speak on darwin and theology monday nov 23 an ordained minister of the roman catholic church father clark is also accredited in the fields of science philosophy and business administration a luncheon of the interfaith council for father clark will ini tiate his tour of the campus on monday he will have dinner with phi kappa theta that evening at 8 p.m father clark's lecture on darwin and theology will be conducted in the osbourne room of the university center the topic of darwin was chosen in conjunction with the 100 th anniversary of his book on the origin of the spe cies an address to a faculty luncheon will start father clark's day on tuesday nov 24 at 4:10 p.m he will speak to the metallurgical engineer ing seniors in williams 102 see rev clark page 5 see audience page 6 by eugene goffin my present intentions are to continue as gov ernor stated gov robert b meyner of new jersey at the pi delta epsilon banquet on saturday night as guest speaker at the journalism honor ary's 50th anniversary convention meyner made a short speech and then submitted himself to question and answer periods during and after the banquet meyner both complimented the press and told what he thought was wrong with it during his speech he traced back his interest in journalism to his tenure as editor of the lafayette as an under graduate i'm indebted to the newspaper's help when i was running for governor he pointed out investi gations conducted by the press on past administra tions in new jersey as an example of his cooperation with the press two press conferences a week and a weekly television and radio program were given meyner said that it gives the people a good idea of what the state is doing gov meyner asks who believes eisenhower the governor also pointed out instances of abuse of the principle of freedom of the press the re porters are lazy and do not want to listen to the discussions they would rather get the press releases and handouts many papers are scoop happy commented the governor they do not want to print a story if an other paper has used it first meyner attributes this fact to the competition that used to be prevelant between newspapers television and radio have eliminated all use for this outlook finally i do believe there is a willingness to rely on rumor and build a story on sketchy material meyner believes the american people have a great respect for the printed word the press must check all the facts before it prints a story you can ruin a career with incor rect facts added the governor concluding his speech with a reminder about freedom of the press meyner stated if we abuse this priviledge it can be lost or abridged the comments of new jersey's
