near the building as khrushchev drove to the en trance there was a small amount of subdued cheering from the crowd but most comment was restricted to oh there he is secret service library circulation up 27 reading rise noted successful — lehigh's successful approach to education remains unknown to students who continue to frequent the university center snack bar in favor of the library apparently unaware that classes have once again started substandard was the term usually ap plied to the university library in 1947 now twelve years and one million dollars later the library is operating at an effi ciency equal to the needs of the lehigh man one of the largest credits to the library is the increase in book circula tion while the student enrollment since 1947 has remained essentially the same the circulation of the library has more than doubled the increase from 1958 alone was nearly 30 per cent another branch of library growth has been the number of new books nearly 100,000 in 12 years new at the library this year is an as sociation with delft technological univer sity through this association it is now pos sible for the library to get microreproduc tions of any materials available anywhere in western europe the reason for this growth seems to be the pressure brought about by the growth of graduate enrollment the higher intellect ual capacity of the undergraduates and the vitality of the faculty another measure of the growth of the library is shown in the cost per student which has doubled to nearly 50 in the past 12 years the only part of the library that has failed to keep in step with the growth idea is the staff while the rest of the library was expanding the library staff increased only by three as a direct result of this it has been impossible to accomplish the rigorous schedule of supervision needed by the open stack system this is creating an increasing number of delays and incon veniences to both students and faculty in a recent report on library conditions it was stated that general work has begun to suf fer to remedy this situation the acquisi tion of five new staff members by 1962 has been suggested by james d mack librarian not yet
