bethlehem maroon has won twelve more games than the brown and white the lafayette team which will invade taylor field this saturday has a good season's record to its credit the mar oon and white grid warriors have played in eight games this fall out of which they have gained the victory in five games have been tied in two artd van quished in one the eastonians began their season on september 29 when they administered their annual beating to muhlenberg this year to the tune of 20 to 0 all three of lafayette's touchdowns were made on straight football in the first half and seeing victory as sured coach sutherland put in a number of second string men jvtuhlenberg exhibiting great gameness uncorked a daring aerial attack that very nearly scored on lafayette and made the rest of the game a battle for the maroon and white on the following saturday coach sutherland's men met the strong pitt team in pittsburgh p.nd though defeated there 7 to continued on page 4 column t as the time approaches for the annual lehigh-lafayette football classic it is interesting to know the past comparative records of these two rivals prob ably the oldest and most persist ent rivals in all football history lafayette has the edge in having thirty-three victories to its credit against lehigh's twenty one while tie games only num ber two last year was the fourth con seeutiye victory for the maroon i continued on pwje !/. column i the lehigh season thus far has been very good although the brown and white team have not proven themselves won ders they have given a very good account of themselves throughout nearly every game considering the season thus far as a whole the lehigh offensive has been one of the strong points and no opposing team has scored more than ten points against the lehigh team this season the brown and white warriors have proven particular ly strong in defense when their goal line was in danger a short resume of the lehigh season thus far is appended the gettysburg game on tay lor field was the first turnout of the schedule lehigh played straight football throughout the game the chief feature of the game were the off-tackle plays with fullback greer plunging thru centre lehigh's offensive was particularly good and line attacks were noticably good ground-gainers fourteen first downs were made in line at tacks the final score found le continued on page 2 column .%) the pep fight and enthusiasm to beat lafayette which has been gathering about the lehigh camp since the opening of col lege will reach a climax at the smoker in taylor gymnasium friday evening in the midst of the blue haze from the tradition al corncob pipes lehigh men alumni and students will come together for that feast of spirit which is always associated with the night before the fafayette game music athletic contests and speakers will constitute a stir ring program arranged by head v-ynttntiei on page 3 column t the rival coaches the rival captains captain springsteen captain deible the kick-off at two o'clock tomorrow on taylor field will commence the fifty-seventh meeting on the gridiron between lehigh and lafayette the meeting of these traditional rivals has become a classic which in the east ranks close to the big-three and army-navy contest in general interest and importance this year finds the maroon team endeavoring to complete a string of five straight victories while the brown and white is determined to break the jinx which has followed them for the last four years the opposing lines are much the same as those which battled to a 3-0 score last year but the backfield combinations of both teams are new lafayette is minus its two stars gazella and brunner whose trained toe accounted for lafayette's only score in last season's thrilling contest but in millman they have a flashy back whom lehigh found hard to stop the veteran lafayette line is considered one of the strong est in the east and around this powerful wall coach sutherland has developed a smashing attack which makes use of well perfected double and trible passes besides millman the maroon has in gebhardt fullback kirkleski and chicknoski halfbacks and ford quarter back four men of more then average ability since the injury to ernst in the perm game chicknoski has been calling the signals from his halfback position with ford who has had previous experience in the line and as substi tute fullback adding his weight to the back field combination with the exception of cusick and hoffman lehigh enters the game with the same line that fought lafayette to a standstill last year with storer in the line-up this year the lehigh back field combination should prove much stronger than last season for this triple threat man has been the sensation of the lehigh attack jacobs freshman halfback makes his debut in the lehigh-lafayette contest but according to previous showing his end runs should cause trouble to the lafayette forwards greer vet eran fullback can be counted on for his usual en all previous records for a lehigh-lafayette steady playing the work of lingle against alfred marks his return to the form which made him a sensation at harrisburg tech and in his first two years at lehigh hess stevens and pryor are able backs who have proved their worth in the earlier games of the season in lewin coach baldwin has a man with an edu cated toe and enough experience this year to make his kicks good when they are needed he is also a fast man at running the ball last year lehigh showed a wonderful defense but little or no offense this year with much the same line she presents a really formidable array of backs the demand for tickets this year has brok game to accommodate the crowds extra stands have been erected encircling the playing field and rising to the south above the perman weight of the line or backfield of both teams where the poundage does differ it is of such trivial concern totaling not more than a couple of pounds ent stands last year's close score the record ojj lehigh so far this season and the present endowment campaign have all contributed to arousing interest unusual even for this con test alumni of both colleges are pouring in fjhom all sections of the country the advance ale of tickets shows that the crowd of specta tors will probably pass the 20,000 mark it is interesting to note that from the sta tistics given and the probable lineup that there will be very little difference in the average the average weight of both the lehigh and lafayette backfield will be 177 pounds on the line it is noted that there is but two pounds dif ference the weight of lafayette line averages 185 pounds and the lehigh line 183 pounds the latter is boosted materially by inclusion of yeager the 210 guard and incidentally the heaviest man on the brown and white squad johnny budd tipping the beam at 225 pounds holds the distinction of being the biggest in dividual on the maroon eleven these averages and weights are taken from the following line-up and statistics william springsteen 24 bet ter known as bill is deter mined to lead his team to vic tory over the strong maroon eleven of lafayette in tomor row's annual classic as center and tackle he has starred in every game of the season his fight and fast playing making him a terror to the opposing of fensive and opening up large gaps in the opponent's line on offensive plays bill received his preliminary training at north western high school in detroit where he played for four years captaining the team in his senior year and rating as one of the best all scholastic linemen entering in the fall of 1920 he managed to land a varsity berth at tackle under coach tom keady and soon showed the lehigh fans the sort of scrappy linesman he was his brilliant playing in the lehigh perm state game won for him a name as a deadly tackier and a man to fill up holes in the line the next year under coach glick of princeton he was shift ed to center with the result that opponents plays thru center fell off for that season in his first year under coach baldwin from dartmouth he was again shifted to tackle and played the first few games of the season his old trouble with his knee again developed and he was sent out to bonesetter reese returning in good condi tion to play in the lafayette game with a result which every one knows who was fortunate enough to see the game so far this season bill has been a stellar player in every game strengthening the line and opening gaps in the oppos ing line on the offensive and great things are to be expected from him in the great battle with the maroon team from down the river the lafayette captain who will call the flip of the coin on november 24 is arthur deible known to his teammates and fellow students as art deible hailing from clinton ohio has quite a past as an athletic having begun his foot ball career at the clinton high school where he played for four years he was a snapper back during his high school days and it was in last year that he was elected to captain his team deible's playing during the four years was very brilliant and in fact the last three years he was honored with the critical laurel wreath as all-scholastic center of the state of ohio deible en tered lafayette college in 1920 and began playing football at center but was soon converted by coach sutherland to the tac kle position he has been play ing tackle during all of his col lege career and with his weight speed spirit and long experience he has developed terrific offens ive and defensive powers the maroon captain weighs 197 pounds and stands six feet three inches high being one of the mainstays of the lafayette line deible has an unique record in having played in every lafay ette football game for the past three years never having been out of the game due to injuries during the last two years he has been mentioned by several of the leading authorities as all american material and last year was given mention by walter camp as all-american deible is a member of the phi gamma delta fraternity at lafayette and has the honor of being vice president of the lafayette l club during his sophomore year he was presi dent of his class during his four years he has also served on many dance committees and by his earnest work he has done much to further the social ac tivities of his alma mater deible's scholastic record is only exceeded by his ability as a foot ball player and he stands at the top of his class coach baldwin saturday lehigh fighting eleven enters the anual grid iron struggle with lafayette under the able tutelage of coach jim baldwin this is big jim's second lafayette game last year his team by a superhuman effort due in part to the le high fight and his coaching held the powerful maroon team to a 3-0 score which was really a victory for the brown and white and baldwin defeated but unconquered was the in scription engraved on the gold footballs given the lehigh team last year this year after an other year's coaching and drill ing under coach baldwin's sys tem the brown and white eleven is going to prove the true worth of the baldwin system by turning the tables on lafayette after four years of defeat coach baldwin is the product of dartmouth college where he played two years as varsity tac kle and fullback one of these years dartmouth defeated her deadly rival iharvaild by the score of 22-0 his career as a football coach began at som merville high school 1908-09 where he turned out a champ ionship football team later at brockton he coach ed football and baseball and was also physical director again jim turned out champion ship teams from 13-15 mr baldwin was physical director of all the schools of passaic n j coaching football baseball and basketball besides here he won interscholastic champion ships in baseball and basketball in 1915 coach baldwin came into his own for he answered the call of rhode island state college and began his career as a college coach there he held the positions of director of phy sical education and coach of the football baseball and basktball teams in 1919 to 1920 coach baldwin was director of physical educa tion and coach of football and basketball at the university of maine while there maine won the new england state college championship and the state of maine championship for the two years coach sutherland coach j d sutherland affec tionately known to the follow ers of the maroon and white as dr jock is rounding out one of the most brilliant terms of office as football mentor that lafay ette has ever seen dr suther land has piloted his gridiron warriors through three strenu ous seasons and has seen them emerge with a goodly string of wins to their credit each year this is the lafayette coach's last season with the maroon and white as he is signed to suc ceed coach gleen warner in putting the pitt panther through its paces next fall dr suther land was due to leave the eas tonians last year but soon after the close of the season he was persuaded to remain for this year due to the unanimous in sistance of the college dr sutherland is a product of the university of pittsburgh from which he graduated in 1916 during his four years of football at pitt he made foot ball history for that institution member of the team through out his college course he gain ed the unsual honor of a place on the all-american eleven his last two years and captained the panthers his last year suth erland held down the position of tackle it is a coincidence that mclaren slated to take over sutherland's work at lafayette played in the backfield of the same panther team after graduating from pit jock sutherland joined th coaching staff of his school ! was while assistant coach a pittsburgh that he made a stud of the famous pittsburgh sys tern of coaching which in modified form has been i vogue at lafayette after fou years on the panther coaching staff dr sutherland accepted the position of coach at lafay dr sutherland is a fine ex ample of a man who is able to do two things well in addition to being a leader in athletic cir cles he is a practicing dentist in pittsburgh
