bethleijbm pa friday october 26 1923 intra-mural met for the lehigh harriers lehigh booters to meet navy price five cents brown and white soccer squad hope to defeat middies this year michelena in the line-up reserves given practice annual clash with muhlenberg promises to be hard fought struggle this meeting is principally a reception for the freshmen and will give all the new men a chance to get acquainted the club is planning many interest ing meetings for the year and the support of the students is de sired to make the meeting a success the idea is to alternate the meetings one meeting will be for student speakers and student discussion while the next will have an outside speak er as the attraction the club hopes to secure prominent speakers from neighboring col leges to enliven the meetings an invitation is extended to all men interested to attend this meeting a good snappy time is assured with smokes and eats to be provided by the club a meeting of the arts and science club is called for this evening at 7.30 o'clock prof p m palmer will be the speaker his subject will be ideals of the arts college w w kommerer 24 secretary of the club will also deliver a historical sketch entitled wedding parties of two centuries ago ideals historical sketch by secretary professor palmer to talk on vol xxxi no 10 cardinal color here tomorrow arts and science club meets tonight printed and mailed at dojdeatown pa university in triangular run first seven men will represent the artriual meet of cross country candidates will be run friday over the st luke's course the first seven men to place will be selected to repre sent lehigh and will accompany the football team to carnegie tech where a triangular meet with carnegie tech and uni versity of cincinnati will be run siegmund porter max well croll barba ridsdale raine and platt have been show ing up well in practice and it is expected that • the competition between them will be keen the idea of holding intramu ral meets originated with coach kanaly and as a further incen tive to competition he is offer ing three medals bearing a fig ure of a runner and signifying track competition the medals will be awarded as follows first place gold medal ; second place silver medal and third place bronze medal that the idea of intramural meets is popular is proven by the large number of candidates who turn out for practice and it is expected that thirty men will toe the mark when the starting gun is fired charge of capt harry l siegmund of harrisburg pa who is a member of the junior class and who during his first two years at lehigh has es i tablished an enviable record at in tercohegiate meets in new york and philadelphia and at dual meets with pennsylvania colleges the task proved an excellent test of the stay ing qualities of the dozen runners participating i preparing for lafayette game country records were smashed by the brown and white runners the post ing of the signs was accomplished according to schedule eventually there will be 200 signs lining the highways between bethle hem and each of the following cities new york philadelphia reading harrisburg and mauch chunk the team started out on its mission iv the environs of bethlehem in cross country team of lehigh university starting jut from stadium with road signs showing distance to campus insert at left capt siegmund pa volunteered their services as sign posters when the committee in charge of the 4,000,000 greater leh'igh fund campaign decided to place road signs on all of the main high ways leading into the home city of the university while no cross hard day for our opponents wooden stands now in position reserved seat applications november i bethlehem to raise 100,000 city started on tuesday on drive j . for lehigh four-million dollar fund ' this saturday the lehigh soc cer team will be the guests of the united states naval aca demy at annapolis the brown and white hooters will leavo friday afternoon on the 3.20 due to the fact that the navy plays princeton in football sat urday afternoon the soccer game will take place in the morning at 10 o'clock last year the middies took lehigh s team into camp by the score of 2 to 0 but this year the brown and white intends to turn the tables the best thing that could have happened to the team is the return of michelena to the fold mich has been out to practice the pas^t week and is showing his same form as he displayed last year it has been said that michelena was the strongest single point in le high's defense and with his re turn to the game the tomorrow gives promise of being the second best of the season considering the lafay ette game the first muhlenberg is primed for the affair as much as lehigh will be for the game of games the twenty-fourth of november tjfcis evening a huge smoker is taking place with a spirit second only to our own the whole college will invade taylor field tomorrow with the set determination to fight and fight hard coach woods of muhlenberg formerly of illinois has primed his men for a hard game and the defenders of the cardinal and gray will give every ounce to down coach baldwin's men muhlenberg has won but one game to date lafayette down ed the allentown eleven with a score of 20-0 but the latter held the eastonites scoreless in the last half of the game muh lenberg launched her brilliant aerial attack in the last quarter but to no avail delaware state then defeated them by a score of 6-0 luck turned however when muhlenberg met dickin son and the cardinal and gray eleven won with a score of 13 0 the gettysburg contest was bitter and the score is a small indication of the battle which took place although lehigh cleaned up on the battlefield men the gettysburg team im game two years ago the allentown team defeated the superior brown and white team partly because of the stronger deter mination of , the allentown eleven and partly because of the semi-indifferent attitude of continued on page 2 column 2 more support needed for self-aid bureau house party plans for november event four tickets each limit preparations for the lafay ette game are nearing comple tion improved wooden stands have been added on the north and south sides bringing the total number of seats up to 16 000 the capacity of the wood en stands is 2,000 the temporary seats on the south side of the field have been built high enough for those on the front rows to see the entire field applications for reserved seats will be sent out to grad uates november first these applications must be returned by november 19th otherwise seats cannot be reserved tick ets will be mailed on the 15th to those whose applications are in at that time no one will be allowed more than four tickets first come first served the seats will be three dollars for reserved seats and one dollar fifty cents for students in the cheering section no student will be admitted to the cheering section without his athletic as sociation card the distribution of seats has not yet been determined it is probable that the alumni will be given the preference of seats this year the students had first choice in former years there has been some comment on this arrangement however this matter will be settled at the next meeting of the athletic committee lafayette will have the north and half of the west section this goes from section s announced to the brown and white by fred rogers 24 president of the inter-fraternity council festivities will reign from fri day the sixteenth of november to saturday night of the same week an inter-fraternity tea dance will be held following the alfred game on saturday there will be a dance at drown hall on friday and saturday even ings the first conducted by the inter-fraternity council and the second by the arcadia attend ance at either of these dances at drown hall is not restricted te fraternity men alone for all lehigh students are privileged to attend emphasis is placed on the fact that the dances are to be con ducted with necessary propriety for due to previous unfortunate occasions the deportment of a few of the students was such as to cause the faculty to frown up on house parties in general at lehigh the recent ruling of the arcadia that any student ob noxiously intoxicated at the af fairs will be summarily dealt with by that body will of course hold true this house party is in the form of more or less a trial and its success or failure will in all probabilities determine whether or not the other part ies of the year will be held here hence the necessity for a good , showing the city of bethlehem began the task on tuesday of raising the sum of 100,000 as its j share of the 4,000,000 new en } dowmenl now being collected for [ the university which has meant so much in putting the city on the educational map about two weeks ago a group of a dozen leading citizens of the city met at the hotel bethlehem to con sider means of presenting to the business men and the resi dents of the city an opportun ity to help in the worthy cause at this time an executive com mittee was formed with dr w p walker chief surgeon of st luke's hospital as chairman ; james e mathews of the beth lehem trust company vice chairman ; and a h buck se cretary of the chamber of com merce secretary a second meeting i was held last friday evening at which the executive committee discus sed further plans for the move ment and drew up lists of the various business and profession al activities of the city to be assigned to the workers the citizens canvass was formally inaugurated monday evening at a dinner and meeting of the executive committee and leading citizens who were invit ed to direct the work in the dif ferent lines of business dr walker presided and speeches were made by john a frick of the allentown-bethlehem gas company and chairman of the lehigh home club district of the fund walter r okeson alumni secretary and general manager of the campaign ; and mayor j m yeakle mr frick made a plea for the wholehearted support of the citizens of bethlehem and ex pressed his confidence in the successful outcome of the citi zens campaign mf okeson outlined in detail the close rela tionship between the university and the business life of the city and also the added glory to come to bethlehem through the cul mination of dr richards pro gram of development for lo cintinuei on page 9 column %) lehigh organization started with fifteen men to help athletics a few years ago there was started an organization at le high known as the students self aid bureau it consisted of about fifteen men all of which were athletically inclined this organization enabled these men to pay part of their ex penses through college thus al - lowing lehigh to gain a greater number of athletes at present it is hoped that at some time in the near future the association will be on such a plane that it can take care of not only men who are athletes but any man who is unable to stand the full expenses of college in this way they would be able to help fel lows who would be a value to the school other than in the line of athletics most of the money made by the students self aid is made in the fall during football sea • son the chief reason for this is at this time they publish the football programs besides this they are the agents of some of the stores and companies about town these are as follows parr brothers shoes zim mermans clothing lehigh steam laundry lehigh tailor worsley's gift shop these are the best compan ies in town in their respective lines and it is up to the student body to patronize them they pay a certain amount to the self aid for the privilege of having them as their agents and it is only fair to support them thus helping to keep some of the athletes in college there will be a meeting of the students self aid bureau next friday night at 7.00 o'clock . new directory on the press the work of compiling the names and addresses of the le high students for the annual di rectory has been concluded and the directory was sent to press last thursday the volume has entailed a great amount of time in arranging and will be most useful to all students as well as friends of the various students it includes the names and beth lehem addresses of 10go lehigh students and about 120 faculty members of the administrative staff it will be on sale at the bursar's office about november the first aiid will be sold for cost vide a place to listen to jazz concerts but 1 rather to furnish a means of learning practical radio communication by experi 1 mentation some men have vol j unteered to lend apparatus to i the club and it is hoped that a transmitting set may be put in operation several men hold government radio operator's licenses at the present time and others hgwe held them in the past these men could operate a transmit ting station if one were instal led and could also give code in struction to members oi the club who wish to qualify for li censes temporary ' officers were elected and empowered to peti tion the faculty committee on student affairs to allow the formation of the club the of ficers of a club would meet the approbation of the faculty if it were undertak en seriously he also suggested affiliation with national organi zations such as the institute of radio engineers and the ameri can radio relay league he ex pressed his wflfi ngiless to help the club obtain speakers to give addresses at its meetings the club h*opes to obtain the use of a room in drown hall which is unused at men and the resi dents of the city an opportun ity to help in the worthy cause at this time an executive com mittee was formed with dr w p walker chief surgeon of st luke's hospital as chairman ; james e mathews of the beth lehem trust company vice chairman ; and a h buck se cretary of the chamber of com merce secretary a second meeting i was held last friday evening at which the executive committee discus sed further plans for the move ment and drew up lists of the various business and profession al activities of the city to be assigned to the workers the citizens canvass was formally inaugurated monday evening at a dinner and meeting of the executive committee and leading citizens who were invit ed to direct the work in the dif ferent lines of business dr walker presided and speeches were made by john a frick of the allentown-bethlehem gas company and chairman of the lehigh home club district of the fund walter r okeson alumni secretary and general manager of the campaign ; and mayor j m yeakle mr frick made a plea for the wholehearted support of the citizens of bethlehem and ex pressed his confidence in the successful outcome of the citi zens campaign mf okeson outlined in detail the close rela tionship between the university and the business life of the city and also the added glory to come to bethlehem through the cul mination of dr richards pro gram of development for lo cintinuei on page 9 column %) lehigh organization started with fifteen men to help athletics a few years ago there was started an organization at le high known as the students self aid bureau it consisted of about fifteen men all of which were athletically inclined this organization enabled these men to pay part of their ex penses through college thus al - lowing lehigh to gain a greater number of athletes at present it is hoped that at some time in the near future the association will be on such a plane that it can take care of not only men who are athletes but any man who is unable to stand the full expenses of college in this way they would be able to help fel lows who would be a value to the school other than in the line of athletics most of the money made by the students self aid is made in the fall during football sea • son the chief reason for this is at this time they publish the football programs besides this they are the agents of some of the stores and companies about town these are as follows parr brothers shoes zim mermans clothing lehigh steam laundry lehigh tailor worsley's gift shop these are the best compan ies in town in their respective lines and it is up to the student body to patronize them they pay a certain amount to the self aid for the privilege of having them as their agents and it is only fair to support them thus helping to keep some of the athletes in college there will be a meeting of the students self aid bureau next friday night at 7.00 o'clock . new directory on the press the work of compiling the names and addresses of the le high students for the annual di rectory has been concluded and the directory was sent to press last thursday the volume has entailed a great amount of time in arranging and will be most useful to all students as well as friends of the various students it includes the names and beth lehem addresses of 10go lehigh students and about 120 faculty members of the administrative staff it will be on sale at the bursar's office about november the first aiid will be sold for cost vide a place to listen to jazz concerts but 1 rather to furnish a means of learning practical radio communication by experi 1 mentation some men have vol j unteered to lend apparatus to i the club and it is hoped that a transmitting set may be put in operation several men hold government radio operator's licenses at the present time and others hgwe held them in the past these men could operate a transmit ting station if one were instal led and could also give code in struction to members oi the club who wish to qualify for li censes temporary ' officers were elected and empowered to peti tion the faculty committee on student affairs to allow the formation of the club the of ficers of a club would meet the approbation of the faculty if it were undertak en seriously he also suggested affiliation with national organi zations such as the institute of radio engineers and the ameri can radio relay league he ex pressed his wflfi ngiless to help the club obtain speakers to give addresses at its meetings the club h*opes to obtain the use of a room in drown hall which is unused at who feel the pangs of hunger jit a suitable hour the price of subscription has been placed at two dollars and the pleasure to be derived from the affair is well worth the price this dance will be a test dance for if the attendance is small it will be the last college dance of the year it behoves those who desire to see ' this function to continue in the fu ture to attend — and for those not so
