sophomore class saw three of its four officers win their battle for re-election only bill wash burn this year's vice-president failed in his campaign to gain of fice again in the presidential race carl schier won re-election by a land slide as he picked up 147 original first place votes to his nearest com petitor's 62 schier gained office on the third ballot ed hamer eastern intercolle giate 157-pound wrestling king dethroned washburn for the vice presidency hamer beat out joe montville even though the latter had more original first ballot votes reapportionment of the votes of lower candidates turned the tide for hamer dave walton this year's secre tary was sent back into office on the second ballot his nearest com petitor in the three-man race was dave springman george jennings also named to a second term in the position of trea surer was the only candidate for any class office to gain the win on see new page 10 will class gifts set a record more than 330 seniors have al ready pledged 100,800 to the class gift plan the number representing 61 per cent of the class of 57 is only 5 per cent short of the record set by the class of 53 charles strauch chairman of the gifts committee announced that 200 men have not yet been contacted he added that only 28 people are needed to set the record dr hayden criticizes u.s middle east policy class presidents charies tillinghast 58 center carl schier 59 left and thomas gilhool 60 tillinghast schier gilhool presidents charles tillinghast carl schier and tom gilhool were elected to top positions in their various classes in elections held monday tuesday and wednesday of all the newly elected prexies tillinghast had the hardest time being elected the hotly contested election for the senior class presi dency saw five ballots before the arcadian came out on top of the heap jack hobby who battled him right to the wire was named to vice-presidency tillinghast had 94 original first place ballots while hobby pulled 87 first places in the final count after the votes of all the other candidates had been reappointed tillinghast had 151 to hobby's 123 bob harris and bill helfrish also staged a nip and tuck battle for senior secretary with helfrich finally coming out in the top posi tion bill scarlet who was elected treasurer on the third ballot had the easiest time of all candidates for class of 58 offices his closest competitor was ed hummers united states policy in the middle east was blasted last night in pack ard laboratory auditorium by dr sherman hayden professor of in ternational relations at clark festival's presentation of finian's rainbow a giant extravaganza and a sunday afternoon brass woodwind ensemble concert tickets will be on sale at the door tonight and tomorrow as long as they last finian's will be repeated tomorrow at 4:30 p.m preceded and followed by the extravaganza at 1:30 and 8:30 p.m respectively choreography by james fender musical direction by profs william schempf and robert cutler and technical advising by prof albert rights complement the otherwise all-student production coordinators bob croneberger 58 and bill murray 57 directed technical workers and the business staff in producing this year's show and at last report all of the saturday shows were nearly sold out dance tickets now on sale for houseparty fred jillson 59 plays the title role of finian in tonight's and tomorrow's production of finian's rainbow bill murray plays the lead opposite doris adams of bethlehem well known soloist with the mora vian central church choir dick fastiggi 58 adds the real irish spice to the musical comedy with his portrayal of og the lepre chaun his dancing partner judy sindel of bethlehem will be the other principal in the show the extravaganza will be pre sented in two parts both utilizing color effect and projection to carry out the musical themes a mammoth projection screen backs the stage and will be used for slide projection to give a wide screen effect the festival version of cinerama uses four projectors instead of holly wood's three camera miracle part i of the extravaganza will include excerpts from porgy and bess a rodgers and hart medley the jericho rhapsody and other see parents page 3 swarms of ticket sellers raided living groups this week in prelim inary ticket sales for the house party dance as added incentive for living group members to grab up the ducats ticket chairman bill helfrich 58 has announced that the living group with the highest percentage of its members buy ing tickets will be awarded first choice of seats for the annual pops concert the last week in may selling the stubs at five dollars each junior class cabinet members are expecting an unusually large ticket demand this year because of the popularity of the two house party bands tickets for the affair have already been distributed to representatives see top page 10 necessary percentage backs rosy proposal next year arcadia will be oper ating under a revised system of elections based on the rosenberg proposal which was approved over whelmingly by the student body during elections which ended wed nesday a total of 81.8 per cent of stu dents voting approved the pro posal out of a total enrollment of 2,542 voters totalled 1,337 or 52.6 per cent of the student body to pass the referendum over 50 per cent of the student body had to vote and two thirds had to vote affirmatively under the terms of this refer endum proposed by arnie rosen berg 57 the constitution of ar cadia will be amended and the by laws changed to allow for the selection of eight arcadians from student groups as before there will be seven men selected from the student body the men from the student groups will be from 1.f.c r.h.c t.c publications musical groups drama and debating religious groups 0.d.x cyanide a.p.0 and brown key they will be named by the groups with the approval of the groups faculty advisors present arcadians had given their approval to the plan scl to combine culture comedy bach mark twain and boogie the next student concerts lectures series presentation has been sched uled as an hour and a half of enter tainment preceding the houseparty formal friday april 26 the program will feature hal holbrook renowned im personator of mark twain and daphne hellman harpist who plays bach and boogie the scl committee has booked the program for the spring weekend following the success of cornelia otis skinner lehigh university brown and white chapel lists service communion for sunday palm sunday services will be held in packer memorial chapel this sunday holy communion will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m the regular service at 11:00 a.m a special feature of the 11:00 a.m service will be the commemoration of the death of james charles gravany 52
