section of the show will probably be worked out by decades starting in 1907 with the first band and picking up the beginning of music festival in 1947-48 when ralph g see smoker page 4 spit n drill hop n braid -- mil ball in an atmosphere of decorative parachutes placards polished brass and spit-shined shoes chuck gor don and his orchestra will provide dance tunes for more than 500 mil ball couples on the top floor of grace hall at nine o'clock tomorrow night performances by crack drill teams and the crowning of the queen by visiting generals will highlight the dance the affair which will be formal boasts the attendance of two gen eral officers as guests of honor maj gen and mrs alvin r luedecke usaf and brig gen and mrs archibald w stuart us army a reception for the visiting gen erals and their wives will be held at 9 p.m in grace hall faculty members and the student body are invited to the dance which will last until 1 a.m tickets are on sale at 2.50 per couple in lam berton hall and through cadet rep resentatives winter concert features handel see hungarian page 3 lajos szabo left lehigh wednes day morning but it was in a much less dramatic manner than he had arrived two weeks ago today lehigh's first hungarian stu dent embarked on a train at 10 a.m for new york to find his new sponsor the national cath olic welfare society he was accompanied to the train station by several members of the sigma chi fraternity at which he had been staying this was a far cry from his arrival when he made his way alone to the campus in a driving snow storm he was forced to leave lehigh when it was discovered that the school could do nothing to help him he was originally sent here because of a clerical error having mixed up his credentials with another lajos szabo which is a very common name in hungary the world university service sent him here believing that he was a civil engineer in his sophomore year of study after conferences with prof peter havas who speaks hungarian flu ently it was discovered that lajos music will not be as impressive as it was when it was first presented in 1749 the many long practice ses sions by the brown and white band in preparation for the fireworks feature seem indicative of a fine performance the fireworks composition was worked out by handel by order of king george ii of england in cele bration of the peace of aix la chapelle in 1749 and presented with live cannon and fireworks admission to the concert is free and it is open to students and the public bishop warnecke guest chapel speaker sunday the 50th anniversary of the brown and white band and the 10th an niversary of music festival will highlight the annual festival week end to be held april 12 through 14 this year student coordinators for this year's production will be wil liam murray 57 and robert croneberger 58 other top echelon students in the organ ization are business manager curtis shollenberger 58 and technical director john parker 57 faculty advisors for the festival will be profs william e schempf head of the department of music albert a rights department of english and robert b cutler head of the glee club a tentative budget is now being worked out and it should be in the neighborhood of 6000 according to rights who is consulting with sac on final financial arrangements plans for the first personnel smoker have been completed and it will be held next thurs day feb 21 in the east wing of drown hall at 8:15 displays of past festival produc tion plans free cigarettes and cokes will be available for interested men the three-day weekend show will include performances by the brown and white band the university glee club as well as a folk opera section the rt rev frederick j war necke episcopal bishop of the diocese of bethlehem will be the guest speaker at the chapel service on sunday at 11 a.m bishop warnecke became bishop of bethle hem in 1954 and has jurisdiction over the episcopal congregations in this diocese which includes the handel's royal fireworks music will be featured by the brown and white band when they present their 10th annual winter concert in grace hall sunday at 4 p.m the colorful fireworks is part of a program of lively musi cal selections the band will per form under the direction of prof waliam schempf at the same time sidney luken bach 60 will make his first appear ance with the band as a trumpet soloist lukenbach is said to be one of the promising members of the band in addition to fireworks the band will play a new ballet for young americans by ralph her mann two american folk songs in settings by siegmeister and marche troyenne by hector berlioz also to be performed are a suite from the opera comedy on the bridge by martinu and and several movements from music for a festival by gor don jacob which was written especially for the 1951 festival of great britani although the royal fireworks lehigh has increased its assets to more than 33,000,000 dr martin d whitaker president announced wednesday in presenting a report to the board of trustees for the 1955-56 fiscal year he pointed out that assets have more than doubled in the past decade dr whitaker reported that lehigh's assets on june 30 1946 were 16,403,081 as compared to 33,450,542 on june 30 1956 what has been accomplished in a financial way has been through the interest and activity of alumni throughout the country friends in bethlehem and elsewhere added to the growing gifts on the part of companies and parents dr whit aker stated where there is such interest and support the future of any private educational institution must be bright he continued dr whitaker reviewed the progress made in curriculum ad vancement in the past ten years at lehigh pointing out the ad dition of such programs as the college honors program which offers undergraduates of dem onstrated outstanding ability the opportunity to devote parts of their junior and senior years to independent study through a series of limited-enrollment sem inars and the preparation of a thesis he also noted the new foreign careers major the five-year com bined program in arts-engineering which has become increasingly pop ular in the last decade although it has been available at lehigh since 1896 the establishment of a divi sion of mechanics and other ad vancements in the graduate school and the institute of research dr whitaker pointed out in his report that in the past decade the annual budget for instruction has more than doubled 1,490,272 having been spent for this purpose in 1955 56 our major efforts must con tinue to be directed toward supplying increased opportuni ties to members of our faculty by so doing we repeat the pat tern of encouraging careers building scholastic reputation and training excellent students it is the formula which has worked so well for us in the past it is the basis on which we have made our current gains and it is our obligation to so ciety in the future he ex plained the report indicates that lehigh's endowment has jumped from 7,664 995 in 1946 to 13,047,637 the worth of the university's physical plant has grown from 7,236,293 to 18,299,519 in the past ten years northeastern area of pennsylvania bishop warnecke did his un dergraduate work at columbia university and completed his theological training receiving the degree of bachelor of divin ity from the virginia theological seminary at alexandria va and his master's degree in sacred theology from the general the ological seminary in new york city he holds honorary doctor ates from the virginia seminary and from the philadelphia di vinity school the bishop began his ministry in mountain missions in the vicinity of luray va later he served as rector of st clement's church hawthorne n.j and st mark's church rich mond va from 1949 until his elec tion as bishop coadjutor of beth lehem he served as dean of trinity cathedral newark n j bishop warnecke is very active in community affairs and serves as a trustee of st luke's hospital and the bach choir pro pressures off for two sections two living group sections have been taken off scholastic probation for the spring semester according to dean preston parr the two groups are new dorm 11-b which had its average raised from a 1.798 to 1.8013 and dravo b-11 which rose from a 1,796 to a 1.8047 a change in the average of a single man in each of the two groups facilitated the change rushing rites over at last by bob teufel the day of reckoning has come for those freshmen who have accepted a bid from one of lehigh's 30 fra terinties after tonight's pledging cere monies and parties comes the time when the frosh will realize that his days of being a much sought-after and prized rushee arc over and his responsibilities as a pledge begin the brothers who were always eager to give him a cigarette lend him a car and in some cases go so far as to lend him one of their girl friends will now scowl and tell him to shape up whenever he steps out of line he will be asked to add his funds to those of the men in the house to pull his house out of the red into which many fell during the expen sive two weeks of hectic and fren zied rushing now he will see what he has got himself into frosh averages influenced by cuts number of class absences of fresh men seems to have a definite bearing on their academic records accord ing to figures released recently by dean john d leith of the 692 freshmen those who had no absencse had an average of 2.17 while those who who had no absences had an 1.24 freshmen with none to four cuts averaged 2.07 those with from five to nine cuts 1.86 those with 10 to 14 1.61 those with 15 to 19 1.38 the median man in the class of 60 went through the fall semester with four class absences of all
