solons seeking student sanction on referendum arcadia will submit to the student body a referendum which will be voted upon during the elections on march 7 and 8 one-half of the stu dent body must vote in the elections and a majority of those voting on the referendum is required to pass 1 chairman of arcadia commit tees do you favor the amendment of section 1 article iv of the by laws of the student body constitu tion which now reads in part ". . . with advice and consent of arcadia the student council the president of the council shall ap point all committees the chairman of which shall be a member of the council and the members of which may be chosen from the student body by addition of this sentence following the words student body council membership as a prerequisite for committee chairmanship may be waved in individual cases by a two-thirds 2/3 vote of council 2 codified motions do you ap prove of the following referendum the council may codify an enact ment whenever two-thirds of the members elected to the council deem it advisable and succeeding sessions be bound thereby and no succeed ing enactment may be altered or re pealed by an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members elected to any session revenuers raid chor ; students names taken a number of lehigh students were involved in a liquor control board raid at the beethoven maennerchor 127 vineyard it which occurred about 10:30 p.m friday the students many of them freshman rushees were required to fill out and sign lengthy and detailed statements concerning every thing from their mother's maiden name to the doctor that officiated at their birth the several agents who made the raid aided in filling out the forms when the raid occurred the agents swarmed in the front entrance and told everyone to stay where they were many under-age students how ever escaped in the confusion at least four fraternities with rushees were involved the agents then proceeded to ask for age identification cards preferably student identification cards those who could not prove they were over 21 or who readily admitted that they were not were required to fill out the forms upon arriving one agent who later said he had recently been a chaperone at kappa alpha fraternity made a comment that there were so many under-age students there that they would not all fit in the lcb car to be transported to an unidentified place included in the questionnaire were such queries as full name local address home address father's and mother's names how many times the person had visited that particular place whether age had been ques tioned by the bartender whether the person had paid for the beer or had gotten it through others and whether beer or liquor was consumed the question that most stumped the students was that concerning the doctor that officiated at their birth no students were taken from the maennerchor many under-age students continued to drink while signing the statements although originally shocked most students took the raid rather lightly assurances by the agents that they would not be fined pleased many of those present those who signed the papers may be subpoenaed to appear if action is taken against the operator by george l beezer superlatives have not yet been coined that could adequately de scribe the magnificent performance of the national symphony orches tra whose varied menu of music from beethoven to gershwin en chanted an audience of 700 music lovers last friday night in grace hall conducting the 86-piece en semble was howard mitchell who is now in his 22nd season as conductor of the 24-year-old musical organization his digni ty and perfection of direction contributed much to the bare setting of grace hall's lower floor starting the program on time with the rendition of berlioz roman carnival overture the orchestra immediately captivated the audi ence with its 1955 th concert since its founding unfortunately late comers destroyed the enchantment of the performance first at 8:17 when the berlioz piece was com pleted and again at 8:35 following faure's pelleas and melisande the second number presented consisted of four parts though the theme was generally sorrowful the muted tones and tingling harp ac companiment sent chills up and down the backs of the more intent listeners it was during this piece that the audience appeared rapt by musical hypnosis beethoven's symphony no 7 in a major in four parts was the next and longest piece this masterpiece so delighted the au dience that it drew four cur tain calls for the conductor fol lowed by encores of tschaikov sky's waltz from swan lake and sousa's stars and stripes forever in a personal interview with mr mitchell the b&w was given some interesting highlights of the organi zation's career the conductor him self a splendid personality described his musicians as the greatest and commented that they can play any thing just anything four-fifths of row for the orange who had met and lost to perm state pitt and lehigh all within the last week and a half lehigh who will now prepare for their own tussle with perm state away this saturday continued to reign along with navy as one of the top eastern wrestling trams ed eichelberger's match with the syracuse captain ed rooney was definitely the feature of the after noon ike pinned rooney 35 second nominating petitions to be turned in to the ar cadia office comparatviely few pe titions have been received until sunday only 18 petitions were re ceived by the office with seven still out these 18 petitions show only an increase of two since last tuesday the original deadline the deadline had been pushed ahead one week until today with the hope that more peti tions would be turned in a meeting of all candidates will be held at 4 p.m today in drown hall campaigning for the elections which are on march 7 and 8 instead of march 4 5 and 7 as originally planned will begin at 8 p.m tonight no new petitions have been pick ed up since last tuesday the two that have been turned in during the extended period were given out be fore the original deadline one peti tion was turned down when it was discovered that the student was on probation when the future arcadians began their campaigning last year 33 stu dents had enough interest in stu dent affairs to procure the necessary 30 signatures fifty petitions had been taken out as compared with the 25 this year the fact that 17 had failed to return their petitions was considered a poor indication wires sliced phone stolen missing one telephone from the math department math teachers came back to school last monday to find a phone missing from their pack er hall third floor offices the wires had been neatly sliced over the weekend by the tele phone-crook and no hints of the thief's whereabouts have yet turned up asked why anyone would want to make off with a telephone dr george e raynor head of the math department replied maybe
