department of eng lish will assume his new role in the college of arts and sciences effect ive immediately president martin d whitaker announced monday dean christensen has served as a member of the faculty since 1939 he also directs the work of the university's committee of the college of arts and science filling the capacity of chairman in an interview dean christensen summarized his outlook toward the future of the arts college as one of promoting increased strength and growth in an attempt to maintain its standards with the sound basis which the college possesses there is certainly no reason why the future should not be a bright one dean christensen said the purpose of the college of arts and science is twofold stated the new associate dean any arts school seeks to provide the best possible educational experiences in the liberal arts for its own students secondly here at lehigh we try to provide the best possible courses in all departments for the students in business administration and in en gineering according to dean christen sen the college of arts and sci ence is trying to broaden its scope of contacts with prospect ive applicants of high caliber at the present time working along with the public relations depart ment however there are certain prob lems that must be solved in order to accomplish this plan there is the difficulty in reaching a wider au dience the institution of several changes is being contemplated in the educational program in order to attract the student interested in ri gorous independent training dean christensen said that the committee of the college of arts and science has been striving to accom plish certain ends to better the school among the achievements see new arts page 6 poor election interest forces petition extension arcadia has extended the deadline for petitions until tuesday after a report at their wednesday meeting revealed that only 16 of the 25 peti tions taken had been returned all interested students were seriously urged by arcadia to file peti tions before the new deadline arcadia feels that the 16 petitions are not indicative of the true student interest and that more students will apply a candidate's meeting will be held tuesday in drown hall at 4 p.m immediately after the petitioning period ends the purpose of this meet ing will be to fully acquaint the candidates with the campaign rules campaigning will officially begin tuesday at 8 p.m elections originally scheduled for march 4 5 and 7r7 r will take place on march 7 and 8 arcadia has requested a sum of 4,500 from the student club fi nance committee for their operating expenditures in the coming year the largest portion of this money will be used for office sup plies publicity salaries of office help elections freshman handbook and campus chest according to the annual treasurer's report arca dia's expected expenditures are 100 less than last year after a minimum of debate a motion to take action on wlrn's pres ent condition was tabled dravo will become an all-fresh man residence hall and drinker an all-upperclass house it was decided at the first rhc meeting tuesday night the upperclassmen presently living in dravo and those freshmen in dravo who do not pledge fra ternities will be moved to drinker house next year the plan of action was ap proved by the residence hall council and philip b wood roofe director of residence halls if now accepted by the administration it will become effective for the fall 55 semes ter initial action for dravo and drinker will begin this month the method of moving men into drink er will probably be as follows next year's upperclassmen will choose their locations and submit their preferences to woodroofe this must be done to the satisfaction of every one concerned disputes will be ar bitrated by the rhc appeals com mittee and the decision of that committee will be binding after all the upperclassmen are housed the prospective sophomores will be placed according to a com posite precedence list containing the names of all the present freshmen in dravo and drinker who wish to return to the upperclass residence halls available space in drinker house will then be assigned in accordance with location on the precedence list again disputes will be settled by the appeals committee no men other than dravo and drinker men may apply for lo cations in symphony under the talented baton of howard mitchell will feature the concert-lecture series presentation tonight in grace hall at 8 p.m the ensemble will offer the roman carnival overture by berlioz peller and melisande suite by debussy and the 7th symphony by beethoven among other selections known to many as the orchestra of presidents because of the com mand performances it has played before franklin roosevelt the national symphony gained much of its recognition before 1948 in the washington area only since howard mitchell took over seven years ago the activities and as a result the fame of the group has sky-rocketed to the point where it is considered today as one of the finest symphonies in the country the ambitious 44-year-old mitch ell is currently taking the ensemble on an extended tour of the eastern seaboard many of the performances of the group can be heard on westminster records set chapel world service replacing the 11 a.m chapel serv ice the annual world day of pray er service will be held at 7:30 p.m sunday with chaplain r e fuessle officiating rev gayraud s wil more jr will speak students from lehigh lafayette muhlenberg cedar crest moravian kutztown and of students byron c hayes in a letter to the b&w dated february 16 hayes advised all frosh to avoid fraternities with a below 2.00 average and which did serve beer and alcohol at their rushing parties because these houses stated hayes would not long maintain good relations with the adminsitra tion the full text of hayes letter to the b&w follows to the brown and white at least a dozen times during the past three days i have been asked what action will be taken against fraternities which held illegal part ies this past friday saturday and sunday under the head of illegal parties are those parties which were held without benefit of an approved petition and any parties at which beer or other alcoholic beveraewas consumed because the question and the answer are of vital interest and concern to all of us — and par ticularly to the 300 frosh who will be pledged to the 30 frater nities — i feel that i should make a public statement the committee on student acti vities will recall my report on fri day feb 11 that several fraternities had arranged illegal social affairs for that evening — and that for the next evening certain fraternities had made either no arrangement for social affairs or had made arrange ments for illegal affairs on the side at the same meeting i reported that ifc had accepted responsibili ty for enforcing the prohibition in beer and alcoholic beverages during the rushing period and that primary responsibility for enforcing this pro hibition was to be left in their hands as matters developed cer tain fraternities altered their plans — others did not it is my understanding that a number of these violations have been brought to the attention of the ifc and its judiciary committee and to date i have received no word that ifc will not handle these
