pho tographs of organizations and the winter sports pictures these must absolutely be taken before march 15th in order that the book will be sure to get out on time the copy is almost entirely written up and as soon as the senior class book section is turned over to the board the first installment of the book will be sent in to the printers snapshots for the book have been very slow in coming in and the boaird would certainly appreciate it if some more were turned in in teresting snaps portraying college life would certainly add a great deal to the attractiveness of the book and should in future years bring back pleasant memories to many of us continued on page four the subscription competition for the 1924 epitome is not turning out so well ; as yet the competitors have the last home game of the bas ketball season will be played to morrow night in taylor gymnasi um against franklin and marshall and from all reports this < hould be a good one last weeks showing was not par ticularly good since the exhibit a gainst albright was not up to par and the syracuse game proved to be a decided bump however the brown and white five will again be whetting its appetite for lafayette goats dulring this week and in all probability should make f and m suffer as a matter of preliminary training up to this time lehigh is slightly on the sunny side when the won and lost column is figured up hav ing won a little more than half their games ; two more wins out of two more chances will pull up the final percentage a considerable am ount all that is necessary is a sec ond half as well played and rich in scoring as the average first halves have been tank teams meet at swarthmore runners to enter indoor contests harmon and cbilds are expected to come through in their respective events lehigh team to participate in phila track meet held by the wanamaker club close match expected many colleges compete the lehigh baseball season opens on april 4th when the university of vermont diamond artists jour ney to bethlehem on their annual southern trip the battery men are already hard at work to get in shape in time fon this game and are work ing out every day in camp coppee it will be impossible to start real practice for several weeks until the ground dries up and is in a playable condition as soon as the ground is in condition coach baldwin will issue the call for diamond candi dates and according to present in dications his call for men will be answered by a larger number of men than has been the case for the past several yeairs the call for battery men issued last wednesday was not very well responded to and it is to be hoped that more men will report in the near future there are three var sity pitchers from last year's team still in college they are j l lees who bore the brunt of last year's twirling a c dv bois and r b adams from these three men and any new mem that may turn out le high will have a very capable twirl ing staff in the matter of catchers the brown and white team is also well fortified having at its call j m read who did the backstopping for lehigh the greater part of last season and w g harwi first string catcher last yealr until he left college lehigh will have last year's out field practically intact with the ex ception of paul larkin who was lost through graduation rogers hess and adams last year's star outfield will be hard to be improv ed on so that the outfield positions are sure to be capably filled continued on page four the infield bids fair to give the new coach the most trouble cap tain rote at shortstop will be great ly missed as well as his running mate donovan at second ; the wotrk of these two was mighty fine last year and many were the thrilling plays engineered by this pair last bible class discusses every day problems the intercollegiates of the east ern collegiate swimming associa tion will be held this year atswarth more college on saturday march 10th this meet is to decide indi vidual championships and not team championships the lehigh men who are expected to place in the different events are harmon in the 220-yard dash and chi ids in the dives harmon has been showing up wonderfully well in all of le high's meets and last year he won the 220-yard championship break ing the eastern collegiate record he has annexed more first places than any man on the brown and white team and stands a very good chance to take the event by storm jimmy quids lehigh's star di ver is also one of the favorites picked in the dives and has made a very good showing all year his form has improved a great deal due to the efforts of coach lukens the other men have been entered and their success is hoped for also captain underwood will plunge for the brown and white and the rest of the men will be named later in the week by coach lukens it is hoped that lehigh will pull through in good shape a>nd annex a few honors for lehigh university notice seniors perm state's new aggregation of mat stairs pulled the unexpected last saturday afternoon and handed coach sheridan's athletes a 14 to 8 mauling at the centre county ins titution the meet was extremely close throughout and it was not un til emory of state thoroughly out wrestled carlisle in the heavyweight class that the nittany team was able to pull out a win this marks the second reversal of the year for the wrestling team and the first set back handed them by a member of the intercollegiate wrestling asso ciation the brown and white matmeri ruled slight favorites be fore the meet but the long trip and fatigueing traveling conditions ex perienced no doubt had its telling effect on the lehigh huskies captain schwarzbach is still phy sically incapfcci tated in the 115 pound class and reynolds again took the mat for lehigh in this bout he was opposed by carey of perm state who proved to be a bit too clever for the brown and white entrant and managed to eas ily garneir the decision with nearly six minutes time advantage it is being voiced about the campus that captain schwarzbach will be unable to don togs for the remainder of the season so reynolds in all prob ability will continue to fill this berth for the rest of the year he is a fast aggressive wrestler and lacks only the experience to make him of championship calibre dcx warriner of lehigh proved too strong for his state op ponent and emerged victor over richards with a substantial time ad vantage at the beginning of the bout his opponent had him in sev eral bad holds but after successful ly wrigglinig out of these he had no trouble in remaining on top for the remaining minutes of the match state's new japanese star nailo obtained a bailriine decision from gihon lehigh's 135-pound ace the match was a see-saw affair through out and referee bennet adjudged nailo victor oni aggressiveness captain evans proved to far out class rogers in the 145-pound bout and the shoulders of the scrappy brown and white entrant were forced to the mat after four and a half minutes of wrestling continued on page three acting-captain coxe kept his slate of victories clean for the year by easily garndring a fall from da vidson of perm state with a crotch hold in little over three minutes of mat work the feast was all the more remarkable when taking into account that he had wrestled four times in new york in the amateur wrestling tourney the same week the match this saturday in tay lor gymnasium between coxe and captain johnson of columbia the present intercollegiate champion should be a bout well worth com ing miles to see fiwood of state gathered much glory for himself by being the first on saturday evening the brown and white eourtmen journeyed to syracuse and returned on the short end of a2b to 16 score the or ange basketeers proved to be an ex tfremely formidable aggregation having battled princeton on the ti gers home floor almost to a draw losing only by a 28 to 25 score and beating pitt this was the first time that the two teams have en countered each other and it is hoped that the relation may be kept up most of the time the game was slow and pretty rough the referee was lax and allowed svxacuse to slip over a good many fouls that another would have called syra cuse's flooir was larger than the brown and white has been used to being ninety feet long all of which contributed to a rather poor game cdplaiu i/isii'd ctind giccve vveiv the orange's star players the two guards scored continuously in the latter part of the first and in the second halves fisher putting in foufr and greeve five double-deck ers taylor was not so good and mendelssohn was substituted for him early in the game gallivan's foul shooting was very poor the forward only finding the basket four times out of a possible twelve macßae was no match for johnny lees the big lehigh center out jumping him every time the ball was thlrown and tapping it to one of his team-mates on the brown and white's side lees and lingle were undoubtedly the outstanding players lingle was clever at getting the ball out of his opponent's hands and rushing it down the floor to the lehigh bas ket while he was in the game lingle put through two field goals one a pretty shot from almost the center of the floor and shot five out of nine single-pointers but about the middle of the first half the snap py forward was banished from the game because of personal fouls and merrill substituted it was then that syracuse began her scoring it seemed as though the captain's loss encouraged the orange players to fight harder merrill played an ex cellent game although it was the first time he had played for over a month it was merrill who scored la beautiful long shot in the last ten seconds of play for lehigh's last scare lees gave a wonderful ex hibition saturday evening lees followed the ball closely and prevented a good bit of scoring hartung played his usual stellar game at guard breaking up numer ous tries for the basket by the new yorkers weinstein seemed rather off color not exhibiting his usual fast brand of basketball continued on page four syracuse led from the start of the game and was never in danger of being beaten the majority of the brown and white's scoring was done beyond the fifteen-foot mark the score at the end of the first half stood at 12 to 8 after the f h leister 23 treasurer of the senior class urges that all se niors pay up all dues within the next two weeks all men not be ing paid up within this time can not have their names on the grad uation programs or the tablet in the chapel be sure to get dues in mr leister's hands within this time he is available at all times at the theta xi fraternity the regular weekly bible class met in dtrown hall on sunday af ternoon to discuss the christ and his character as a man his life was discussed and many of the problems and temptations which he had to cope with were compared to some of the experiences in the life of a man to-day professor b l miller presided over the class and presented sev eral very interesting comments of writers and authorities on religion concerning the topic of discussion professor miller presented these comments supplanted by some ideas of his own on the subject in a way that made the class a very interest ing and instructive one a goodly number were present last sunday and it is hoped that \ even more of the student body will avail themselves of this splendid opportunity to enlighten oneself on imany of the practical phases of ! christianity the mechanical engineering so ciety held its regular meeting last thursday evening in the physics lecture room after a short busi ness meeting the speaker of the ev ening mr c r waller of the de lav-al steam turbine co was in troduced mir waller gave a very interest ing talk on steam turbines tracing their history back to the very be ginning and explaining why they could not compete successfully with the steam engine until about 1870 the poor grades of iron and steel first used would not withstand the great stresses due to the centrifugal force produced when rotating at high velocities so that most experi ments resulted in the explosion of the rotor the first successful tur bine was made in sweden by dr de laval and likewise the first tur bine used and exhibited at the chi cago exposition in 1894 turbines were the logical ma ( chines to look to when power was needed in large units where steam engines could not be made large enough and if made large enough took up too much room likewise in ships where size and reliability were essential the modern tur bine is practically fool-proof in some cases turbines have run con tinually for over three years with out being shut down the labor per horsepower is also reduced in the case of the turbine the necessity for high grade steel is very apparent in the case of the rotor of a steam turbine where stresses as great as 25,000 lbs per square inch with an average stress under normal running conditions of 18,000 lbs per square inch heat treated steel was imported from sweden at first but due to the cost and time element of shipping it was necessary to develop high grade steel in the united states high efficiencies are obtained at high speeds this has lead to the introduction of high-speed turbines with reduction gears speeds great er than 3,000 r p m must use reduction gears for amy type of ma chinery while double sets of reduc tion gears must be used for steam ships governing of the steam turbine was a continual source of trouble the impurities in the steam such as boiler compound lead to corro sion of the apparatus this has been overcome by the introduction of ball bearings in some places the old-time method of packing around movable rod's has been done away with and threaded spindles have been introduced in their place cair bon rings are sometimes used as packing monel metal or nickle bronze is used for the blades and continued on page four the preparatory schools will in clude b p 1 metrcersburg acad emy and the hill school together with all of the philadelphia high schools these schools have made names for themselves in every line of sport and represent the best in inter-academic sports and will no doubt offer as much entertainment as the college events the big feature of the meet will be the competing of the women track champions of the world practically all of the leading col leges of the east will be represent ed at this meet together with many of the leading preparatory schools the colleges represented will in clude yale harvard princeton al bright n y u fordham colby pennsylvania lafayette and le high the track teams of these institutions are among the best in the country and therefore the pros pect of a fast and snappy meet with much keen competition is very bright this will be the 11th annual car nival of the lub which is being re vived after four years rrior to this time the meadowbrook meets had been held every year but were discontinued due to the lack of a suitable building in which to hold them since then however the ice palace at 45th and market streets has been built and with a seating capacity of 5,000 offers an ideal building in which to hold a meet of this kind on saturday march 10th the lehigh trackmen will journey to philadelphia where they will parti cipate in an indoor track meet held under the auspices of the meadow brook club of the wannamaker stores buckets of the turbine thus reduc ing the wear and corrosion to a minimum the largest units now in use are at the queen lane pumping sta tion philadelphia these units drive pumps with a capacity of 40 million gallons per day and super cede large vertical reciprocating steam engines lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday the leading col leges of the east will be represent ed at this meet together with many of the leading preparatory schools the colleges represented will in clude yale harvard princeton al bright n y u fordham colby pennsylvania lafayette and le high the track teams of these institutions are among the best in the country and therefore the pros pect of a fast and snappy meet with much keen competition is very bright this will be the 11th annual car nival of the lub which is being re vived after four years rrior to this time the meadowbrook meets had been held every year but were discontinued due to the lack of a suitable building in which to hold them since then however the ice palace at 45th and market streets has been built and with a seating capacity of 5,000 offers an ideal building in which to hold a meet of this kind on saturday march 10th the lehigh trackmen will journey to philadelphia where they will parti cipate in an indoor track meet held under the auspices of the meadow brook club of the wannamaker stores buckets of the turbine thus reduc ing the wear and corrosion to a minimum the largest units now in use are at the queen lane pumping sta tion philadelphia these units drive pumps with a capacity of 40 million gallons per day and super cede large vertical reciprocating steam engines lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday
