Christian Lehigh senior Ian Eason, one of four quad-captains, tackles Towson QB Joe Lee. Iason made 11 stops on the afternoon and returned an interception 32 yards. Tigers Tamed in Goodman Thriller The mark of a great team is the ability to stare into the face of adversity and muster the courage and determination to win. Faced with just such a challenge last Saturday, Lehigh bared the heart of a champion en route to a thrilling, come-from-behind 44-39 victory over record-setting Towson in front of 10,789 fans at a sun-drenched Goodman Stadium. With the victory, the No. 7-ranked and undefeated Mountain Hawks moved into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League and extended their NCAA Division I leading regular-season winning streak to 20 games. In a battle of offensive powerhouses, Towson was the first to strike. Lehigh went "three-and-out" on its first possession and Towson capitalized on the good field position. Jamaal White caught an 11-yard pass from Joe Lee to put the Tigers up 7-0. Lehigh came right back on their next possession with a six- yard touchdown run by Ronald Jean that capped a nine play, 71-yard drive. On the first snap of Towson's second drive, Joe Lee fumbled the snap and it was recovered by Lehigh's Bubba Young. Soon after, Lehigh quarterback Phil Stambaugh threw his sixth interception of the year as the ball went off the hands of wide receiver Kody Fedorcha and into the hands of Towson's Jabari Garrett. Broadcastco/7: Lehigh Football on SETV Service Electric Cable Television in the Lehigh Valley will televise four Lehigh home football contests, including the September 18 game versus Monmouth; the October 2 game versus Columbia; the October 23 game versus Holy Cross; and the October 30 contest against Towson A Pair of Third-Place Finishes The rebuilding process for the Lehigh men's and women's cross country teams took a major step forward on Saturday as both the men's and women's teams finished third at the Patriot League Championships. Bucknell took first place in both races and Army followed in each with a second place finish. "I think we're at the point in the rebuilding of this program where instead of looking back and where we've been we are now looking forward and where we want to go," commented a very pleased head coach Debbie Utesch. Utesch had a right to be excited. The preseason coaches' polls had tabbed Lehigh to finish last in the women's division and fourth on the men's side. Lehigh's women's team, which is comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores, ran much more like an experienced group of veterans. Freshman standout Lucinda Hall was Lehigh's top finisher as she crossed the line in 12th place. She was followed by sophomore Stacy Rallo, who finished 18th, freshman Claudin Hull (20th), sophomore Megan Ackers (28th), freshman Edann Brady (31st) and junior Colleen Glass (33rd). "We knew coming into the women's race that it could be very tight and that we could finish anywhere from third to fifth," Utesch said. "I was really pleased with the amount of poise the whole team ran with. We came into the race knowing we didn't have that one runner who would be up with the leaders. It was important for us to run in a pack and execute the strategy we talked about. They all did that." The men's finish was the best Patriot League showing for Lehigh since 1993. Senior Steve Gourley again paced the Mountain Hawks with an overall finish of sixth. "The men's team really improved and cut the gap between us and Bucknell and Army," Utesch said. " We came into the meet with a lot of adrenaline and had some of our guys really step it up. Our seniors Steve (Gourley) and Nate (Harkins) had great performances and Justin Taylor turned in his best race of the year. I was also pleased to see Alex (L'Heureux) prove that he had figured out the distance." Following Gourley across the finish line were freshman Alex L'Heureux in 14th, sophomore Dan Contreras in 15th, senior Nate Harkins 18th and junior Justin Taylor in 22nd. Women's Team Standings 1.
