LEHIGH ATHLETICS Website: http://www.lehigh.edu Hotline: (610)758-LULlT SOFTBALL: Two players garner honors from league 11 MEN'S LACROSSE: Duncan battles adversity to become elite player 11 STANDINGS: Complete league standings 11 South Mountaineer Volume 11, Issue Lehigh University Athletics Weekly April Outdoor Track and Field Lehigh "outduals" Lafayette Senior Alan Ferguson's breaks school record, figures in five wins Matt Utesch by Bruce Buratti Easton Express-Times Once a water polo player, Alan Ferguson's brief career in track and field has hardly made him feel like a fish out of water. Ferguson had the kind of day that only a Lafayette athlete or fan could hate, winning four individual events and anchoring Lehigh's4xl00 relay to first place as the Mountain Hawks won their annual Patriot League track and field dual meet, 92-71 over the Leopards, Friday at Fisher Field." The Lafayette women, meanwhile, got school record performances and two victories apiece from Medinah Salaam and Carrie Strong, two wins from Hope McCorklc and a school-record throw by freshman Rhonda Snyder in the hammer to defeat Lehigh 100-54. Ferguson, a senior who has been competing in track only since his senior year of high school, had a remarkable day in the sprints and jumps on a chilly, breezy afternoon that was not particularly conducive to either activity. Ferguson knocked nearly two-tenths of a second off the Mountain Hawk school record in the 100 meters by hitting the tape in a hand-held 10.3 seconds; he won the 200 in a blistering 21.5; and he anchored Five's a Charm Senior Alan Ferguson won four individual and one relay event. Here's a look at his stellar day. *10.3-100 21.5-200 4x100 relay 22-7 1/4 long jump 45-1 1/2 triple jump *school record Lehigh's 4x100 relay (42.0 seconds) after teammates Ron Jean, Colin Keefe and Bill Ribbecke put Ferguson in good position. In the field, Ferguson won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 7 1/4 inches and also took the triple jump with an effort of 45-1 1/2. In the latter event, Ferguson was down to his third and final attempt after fouling on his first two chances. "When I mention to people I played water polo for most of my high school career in Chicago, they just look at me like I'm nuts," Ferguson said, who also played basketball for Lehigh his sophomore and junior years. "But I swear, that's what I did." Both programs had several key athletes out on account of injury. The Lafayette men held out sprinter and conference 400-meter champion Rodney Brunson while the Lehigh women did not have Ellen Cogswell, the reigning Patriot League champ in the 3,000 meters. The Leopards were also without Bill Yinger, the Patriot League runner-up in the high jump. Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said the injuries perhaps took a little away from the meet. "I'm extremely pleased with the way our kids competed but I would have liked to see us at full strength and Julio (Julio Piazza, Lafayette's head coach) at full strength. To win then would have made it even more special." Utesch is in his first year as head coach at Lehigh. Last year, he was on the other side of the line of scrimmage since he served on Piazza's staff as the Leopards' jump and hurdles coach. "It's not really all that emotional forme because I was only an assistant here," Utesch said, whose wife Debbie, coaches Lehigh's cross country program. "We did better against Lafayette than we did in indoors because our team is tailored more for the outdoor events, I feel." On the women's side, Lafayette's Salaam swept both the 100 and 200 meters while tying Tinabeth Pina's school record of 12.0 in the 100 meters. She also took a turn on the 4x 100 relay. Strong raised the bar on her own school record in the high jump, lifting from 5-6 to 5-8. Also, she won the 400 intermediates, coming on strong over the last 70 meters, to overtake Lehigh's Tara Santoroski, the District 11 record-holder from Northampton, Pennsylvania, by four Kelly Lyons ran the second leg on the Mountain Hawks' winning 4x400 relay team meters in 1:04.2 Santoroski, though, won the 100 highs in a personal best of 14.5 seconds and ran an impressive 58.9 leadoff leg on Lehigh's 4x400 relay team in the meet's final event. Notes: Lehigh will host the Lehigh Games, Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at Goodman Campus Men's Lacrosse Lehigh set to show down with Army by Frank Thompson Sports Communications Office With its 10-5 victory over Holy Cross last weekend, Lehigh set the stage for this week's Patriot League showdown with the Army Cadets. Lehigh boasts a 4-2 mark and stands unbeaten at 2-0 in the league. Army, winners of six of the past seven Patriot League titles, is 4-4 this season and a perfect 2-0 in the league. Lehigh has been led this season by the nation's 14th leading scorer, senior Ian MacGilvray Ian MacGilvray. Coupled with senior Mark Duncan, who led the country in goals per game last season, Lehigh boasts an explosive offense that has averaged more than 11 goals per game. MacGilvray has 14 goals and 10 assists this year. Duncan stands with 12 goals and five assists as both are in the league's top five in scoring. Another standout on the Lehigh side has been the defense. Led by seniors Doug Mylow and Jared Harrison the defense has been stifling, especially with sophomore Todd Schreiner in the net. Schreiner leads the Patriot League in overall goalkeeping with a 5.54 goals against average. The next closest is Army's Lou Kousouris, who owns a 9.9 GAA. Men's Tennis Mountain Hawks earn split over weekend Lehigh broke even this past week, losing to unbeaten Navy, 0-7, and defeating Towson, 4-3. The Mountain Hawks record now stands at 8-5 overall.
