PATRIOT LEAGUE HONORS Sophomore split end Deron Braswell was named to the Patriot League Honor Roll after catching 11 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Eleven catches is the most by any Patriot League player in a game this year. FOOTBALL: Brown and White edged by Colgate 30-23, 8 Fresh perspective on "The Game" - Lehigh vs. Lafayette, 7 Mentesana begins a new era of Lehigh men's basketball, 6 South Mountaineer Volume 10, Issue 11 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly November 19,1996 Red Raiders remain red hot Colgate outlasts Lehigh to stay in three- team struggle for Patriot League crown by Matt Leedy '98 South Mountaineer Editor Fred Dunlap is anxious to chisel Colgate University's name on the Patriot League trophy named in his honor. Colgate (6-4, 3-1 Patriot League) entered Goodman Stadium with the league's hottest offense and caught fire again to burn Lehigh 30-23. Dunlap, the Red Raiders' offensive coordinator, kept the Engineer defense off balance for most of the game. Dunlap coached the Brown and White for 11 years, beginning in 1965. His option offense — and the same players who have sparked the red-hot Red Raiders since the fifth game of the season — torched Lehigh (4-6, 2-2). Running back Anthony Caravetta powered both the league's and Division I-AA's top-ranked ground game, rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Caravetta has rushed for 100 or more yards in Colgate's last six games, averaging 149 yards a game in that span. Fullback Daymon Smith added a pair of touchdowns and 63 yards on 13 carries. Freshman quarterback Phil Stambaugh was very effective in the second half against Colgate Saturday. Freshman Ryan Vena, a contender for the Patriot League's Rookie of the Year, completed 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The Red Raiders are 6-0 and averaging a 19- point margin of victory since Vena took over at quarterback. Colgate Head Coach Dick Biddle credited Dunlap with much of Vena's success. He also mentioned his experience with other stand-out quarterbacks, such as Lehigh's Director of Athletics Joe Sterrett, whom Dunlap coached to All- American status in 1975. He is a great quarterback coach, just ask Joe Sterrett," Biddle said. "You've got to be tough to play for him." Vena's primary target, tight end Chris Young, caught seven passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Young riddled Lehigh's defense by running out-patterns behind the linebackers and in front of corner back Curtis May and the rest of the secondary. "A lot of times they were running the option, which forces the linebackers to come up, and the tight end was just slipping behind them.," May said. Colgate opened up a 21-point lead, its widest margin of the game, after Smith ran three yards for a touchdown and a 28-9 third-quarter lead. Earlier, Caravetta eclipsed the 1,000-yard milestone on a 12-yard touchdown run through the right side ofthe line. Lehigh answered both touchdowns with scores of its own. After Colgate's first second-half score, freshman quarterback Phil Stambaugh fired a 28-yard pass into the left side of the end zone for flanker Jason Streeter. Streeter made a diving, outstretched grab to pull Lehigh within 12 at 21-9. The Engineers failed on the two-point conversion but Streeter's catch kept Lehigh's touchdown streak Joe Ryan Joe Ryan Eji Maxiiom-Paige runs back his game- high 36-yard kick-off return for Lehigh. alive at 95 games. The Brown and White offense struck again in the fourth quarter when Stambaugh connected with split end Deron Braswell for a nine-yard touchdown. Braswell kept the drive alive with an eight-yard reception on fourth down, needing five yards for the first. The Engineers' second consecutive touchdown was triggered by a surprise Drew Poppleton on-side kick recovery on Lehigh's 48-yard line. The field position allowed Lehigh to close within five on another Braswell reception. The sophomore took a quick slant 13 yards to the end zone for Lehigh's final score and a 28-23 deficit. Braswell bounced off two defenders before stretching the ball across the goal line. It was his ninth touchdown ofthe season and second ofthe game. Braswell was Lehigh's leading offensive weapon, with 11 catches for 151 yards and a long of 67 yards. Braswell now has exactly 1,000 receiving yards for the season. Stambaugh had a solid game, completing 25 of 50 passes for 264 yards, three touchdown throws and an interception. Sophomore tailback Brian Baker led Lehigh's ground game with 90 yards. He also caught four passes for 27 yards. After last week's action, three teams have one loss in the Patriot League. Bucknell University (5-5, 3-1) hosts Colgate Saturday, with the loser eliminated from league championship contention. Lafayette College (5-4, 2-1) has a shot at the league crown if it beats Lehigh Saturday. If the Leopards win they will play a makeup contest with Fordham University. With its second league loss of the season Lehigh was bounced from the Patriot League title picture.
