Right now. the Lehigh Engineers would be the last to disagree with her. And while the steel mills of Bethlehem are a far cry from the cornfields of Kansas, the fact remains that the Engineers remained perfect (7-0) at home this season with an 88-78 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena before the third straight crowd of over 3.000 at the arena (3.424). The win enabled Lehigh to move into a first-place tie atop the Patriot League standings with just about every other team on the Eastern seaboard. Besides the Engineers and Crusaders. Bucknell, Colgate, and Fordham also; have 5-2 records within the league. "Today felt like old times, like last year when we were winning all those games." said senior forward Bob Krizansky. who pumped in 25 points to go along with eight rebounds, nine assists and three steals. "It has to do with confidence. We believe no one's going to beat us here." Lehigh took a 40-37 lead into the locker room but scored the first eight points of the second half to open the gap to l l points. The Engineer defense was a big part of the story as Holy Cross shot just 38 percent from the field (32 percent in the second half), while piling up 22 turnovers. "That's the best defense we've had Jay Hipps skies over Holy Cross' Frank Powell for one of his team-high nine rebounds in Saturday's win over the Crusaders. -Photo by joe ryan all year." said Lehigh head coach Dave Duke. "That was a good win for our confidence and I think this is going to turn it around for us." The Crusaders did manage to cut the lead to four points at 70-66 with just over five minutes remaining, but the Engineers used some timely shooting to thwart the comeback attempt. In all. Lehigh shot 52 percent from the field and 79 percent from the foul line in the second half. "We've got to win eveiything at home and we've got to take it on the road." said senior guard Steve Yaniga, who scored a source: the Patriot League Young continues record string Lehigh junior Hassan Young continued his streak of school records last Saturday at the Syracuse University Open, winning the 400-meters in a new Lehigh record time of :48.72.
