Vol. 19 — No. 23 * l b. APRIL 5, 1977 BETHLEHEM, PA. i Early-Season Rush Gives Baseballers 7-3-1 Record; Carroll Paces Attack Don McCorkel (26-2) Led Mat Squad Don McCorkel, a three-time eastern champion from Hershey, Pa., and one of four senior starters in the lineup, paced Lehigh wrestlers during 1976-77 competition with 26 victories in 28 bouts. His efforts helped the Engineers, coached by Thad Turner, post their 25th consecutive winning campaign. Lehigh won its third straight Eastern Intercollegiate Assn. team title and paced all eastern squads in the NCAA tournament with a seventh-place finish. The Engineers were 14-3 during the regular season and they also won the annual Penn State Invitational Tournament over Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Navy, Syracuse, Clarion State and the host Nittany Lions. One of their dual losses was a tough 22-13 setback at the hands of Iowa State which went on to take national championship laurels. McCorkel's 26-2 record led the squad. Mike Brown of Bethlehem, Pa., an eastern champion and fifth-place finisher in the Nationals, emerged as one of the nation's most outstanding freshman grapplers as he fashioned a 26-3 record. McCorkel wrestled at 190 or heavyweight during the season (Continued on Page 2) Women's Basketball (B8.W Photo) FIRST BASEMAN Glenn Troxel holds runner near the bag during game at the Saucon Valley Fields. Troxel batted .326 over first 11 contests as Lehigh fashioned 7-3-1 record. Hotline Had 31,152 Calls During Fall, Winter Action The Lehigh Hotline, nearing the end of its third year of operation as a 24-hour-a-day recorded telephone sports scores and information service, handled 31,152 calls during the recent fall and winter seasons. A peak was reached March 16- 20 during the NCAA wrestling tournament at Norman, Okla., when 16 reports were offered on the hotline and 4,826 calls were handled. The Lehigh Hotline is supported by the division of intercollegiate athletics, the Alumni Assn., and the office of public information at the University as a service to alumni nationally and locally and to students, faculty and staff on campus, and other fans and news media outlets. Last fall there were 11,993 completed calls for football information and other sports activities. During the winter there were 19,159 for wrestling, basketball and other events. These totals do not count busy signals or other uncompleted calls. 13-7 Record For Lehigh Team Celia Webster, a sophomore from Pleasant Valley, Pa., led the Lehigh women's basketball team scorers during the recently- completed season with 217 points. Lehigh, coached for the first year by Annette Lynch, compiled a 13-7 record and finished third in an Eastern Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women tournament at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. The Engineers lost their opener in that tourney to Fordham, 49-45, but came back to defeat St. Francis, N.Y., 66-62, and Manhattanville, 47-34. Lynch, a U.S. Pan-American team member in the 1967-68 season and a member of the Allentown Crestettes this winter, says it "was a pleasure" coaching the squad. "It was a completely unselfish group," she explains. "All of the women had only one thing in mind, to do their very best, and they accepted every challenge." She was assisted as coach by Jan Dykehouse. Webster averaged 12.8 points a game to roll up her team-leading total of 217. Cheryl Novak, a freshman from Wayne, Pa., was the No. 2 scorer with 192 points and Karen Lelinski, a freshman from Levittown, Pa., finished No. 3 with 170. Lelinski was the rebound leader with 197. Pat Garnish, a sophomore from Clifton Springs, N.Y., set the pace in assists with 95 and steals with 44. Kathy Benusa, a sophomore from Verona, Pa., was the quickest member of the squad and the leader in field goal percentage with a 52 per cent mark. Lehigh opened its season losing twice in three starts but then ran off five straight victories during a spell in which the Engineers won eight times in nine tries. Although failing to top any of the individual statistical categories, junior Sue Woytkewicz of Phillipsburg, N.J., senior Sue Sachs, of Stamford, Conn., and sophomore Nancy Barrett, of Oreland, Pa., are credited by coaches Lynch and Dykehouse with making "valuable contributions" to the winning record. Engineers 3-1-1 After Return From South; Doubleheader Against Hens Postponed Lehigh baseballers, off to a strong start this season with four victories in six starts during a spring vacation trip into the southland, maintained momentum upon their return home with three triumphs and a tie in five outings. An East Coast Conference doubleheader against Delaware was rained out Saturday, leaving the Engineers with an impressive 7-3-1 record after their first 11 games of the campaign. Outfielder Joe Carroll, of Arlington, Va., leads the regulars in batting with a .348 mark. Other starters hitting the ball well include first baseman Glenn Troxel of West Lawn, Pa., (.326), catcher Al Ottinger of Allentown, Pa., (.317) and third baseman Rick Piger of Breiningsville, Pa. (.308). Ed Scheidler, a junior from Hellertown, Pa., is a utility man and designated hitter with a .438 average in seven contests. Last year's outstanding freshman hurlers, Mark lorio of Trenton, N.J., and Mitch Smith of Allendale, N.J., are picking up the same pace as sophomores, lorio leads in won-lost totals with a 3-1 mark while Smith is 2-1 and the team ERA leader with a 1.47 figure. Doug Reichenbach, a freshman hurler from Flemington, N.J., has a 2-1 record. ST.
