Gardner, Aprill Pace Romp At Maine Keller Stars In Draw, 1-0 Victory Lehigh's soccer team took over first place in the East Coast Conference western division last week with a tie and a victory in league competition. Goalie Larry Keller, of Penn- del, Pa., once again demonstrated why he's ranked with the best netminders in eastern collegiate circles as he gave up only one marker. Bill Schultz had kicked a 30- yarder for the Baby Bisons in the first period. Lehigh, according to head coach Joe Sterrett," played well enough to win and dominated much of the game" yet had to settle for the draw. The Little Engineers have a 2-1-1 record, with one game left, at home Friday (Oct. 29) against Lafayette at 2:30 p.m. Lehigh Routs Bears, 24-0, With 360 Yards Rushing; First Shutout Since 1974 Shaking off a 3-game losing streak, Lehigh footballers blasted Maine last Saturday, 24-0, with an awesome display of hard running, blocking and tackling. The Engineers were in complete command from start to finish before a disappointed Homecoming Day audience of 7,600 chilled rooters at Orono, Me. Coach John Whitehead's squad pounded out 23 first downs during a performance in which they slashed for 360 yards on the ground and added 60 in the air. Maine, of the Yankee Conference, could do little to stop the onslaught which developed under overcast skies with blustery winds whipping a few snow flurries across the field. Lehigh's wing-T had the look of an old-fashioned single wing offense as linemen rolled up Black Bear defenders on sweeps or drove holes through the middle. It was an afternoon for students of hard-rock, fundamental football, offensively and defensively. With 6-4, 260-pound offensive tackle Mark Orcutt, of Oneida, N.Y., leading the way up front, Lehigh fullback Rod Gardner of Maplewood, N.J., and halfback Dave Aprill, of Fords, N.J., pounded the Black Bears. Gardner, apparently all the way back from a knee injury which sidelined him for the first two games and delayed his return to top form, carried the ball 36 times for 174 yards and also topped the game's receivers with four catches for 45 yards. Aprill wasn't far behind, grinding out 114 yards in 18 attempts and snagging a pair of aerials for 15 yards. Maine, its running attack thoroughly choked off, netted only 58 yards on the ground and 110 in the air. Much of that came in the final minutes, with Lehigh ahead 24-0 and reserves in the game, as the Bears moved from their 26 to the Engineer 15 before running out of downs. The Engineers scored on their second possession, battling from midfield to the Maine 12 before stalling and getting a 30-yard field goal from Greg Pierog of Emmaus, Pa. Midway through the second period safetyman Roger Glasbrenner of Pittsford, N.Y., recovered a Maine fumble on the Lehigh 47 and the Engineers increased their lead to 10-0.
