Vol. 16 — No. 8 OCTOBER 30, 1973 BETHLEHEM, PA. Gardner, Schlegel Set Pace In Victory Over Gettysburg LEHIGH SAFETYMAN Jack Tracy (43) leaps high for one of his two interceptions against Gettysburg, taking the ball away from Mark Wolf. The steals led to nine Engineer points in 43-15 victory. Rogers Sets Run Record Wayne Rogers, of Poughkeepsie, N. Y., set a record of 25:09 on the Gettysburg College 5.1 mile cross country track as Lehigh defeated the host Bullets, 24-33. Gordon Oliver of Mt. St. Mary's held the old mark of 25:02. Other Lehigh place-winners were Dave Cope of Fogelsville, PaM and Stellan Thoren of Sweden, tied for fourth; Jim Barnes of Denville, N. J., sixth; Mickey Yardis of Chappaqua, N. Y., eighth, and Brian Faraci of (Continued on Page 2) QB Duel Saturday Super quarterbacks Kim McQuilken of Lehigh, and Tom Parr of Colgate, clash for the third and final time Saturday in Taylor Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Parr, basically a runner in the Red Raiders' wishbone offense, is a dangerous passer when the occasion demands. McQuilken, basically a passer, runs very seldom. Colgate has won the previous scrambles between these two quarterback stars, 30-21 two years ago and 42-34 last season. Frosh Gridders Undefeated Tailback Kenny Schmidt, of Stamford, Conn., continued to star for Lehigh's frosh football team last week, scoring on a 14- yard run as the undefeated Little Engineers won a night contest over previously-unbeaten Bucknell at Lewisburg, Pa., 10-7. Quarterback Bruce Crystal, of Scarsdale, N.Y., contributed a 31- yard field goal. Earlier in the year a field goal by Crystal gave the Lehigh varsity a 22-20 edge over Connecticut. Since that time the youngster has been playing with the freshmen. Coach Jeep Bednarik's eleven (4-0) meets Lafayette in Easton Nov. 9 in its bid to complete a perfect year. Each Scores 2 Touchdowns In Parents Day Grid Romp Freshman tailback Rod Gardner, senior tight end Bill Schlegel and senior quarterback Kim McQuilken led the way Saturday as Lehigh moved a step closer to a winning football season with a victory over visiting Gettysburg, 43-15. It was the Engineers' fourth triumph against three losses and a tie. Contests against Colgate, Rochester and Lafayette remain. —Gardner, a 8-1, 190-pound youngster from Maplewood, N. J., and Seton Hall Prep, made his first varsity start an auspicious one with 21 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and three pass receptions for an additional 38 yards. It was the finest running exhibition turned in by a Lehigh back since Jack Rizzo accumulated 313 yards against Lafayette in a 48-19 romp winding up the 1971 season. Rizzo is now with the N. Y. Giants. Schlegel, of Troy, N. Y., caught five passes for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The scores came on plays covering 42 and 68 yards with McQuilken on the throwing end time. Schlegel, with 116 catches in his varsity career, is nearing the Lehigh record of 132 established by another tight end—Rich Miller—from 1965 through 1967. Schlegel also is closing in on a one-season standard of 59 which he set in 1972. He has 45 with three games remaining. McQuilken, holder of every Lehigh passing record, completed 11 of 21 aerials for 234 yards and the pair of TDs to Schlegel. The Engineers, who seem to rise to whatever heights are necessary for a strong performance depending upon the opposition, didn't give an Upperclassman Parents Day audience of 12,000 a look at their best efforts. Except for Gardner there wasn't much effective running and McQuilken has had better days. One player who did deliver a razor-sharp job was reserve quarterback Joe Alleva, a junior from Suffern, N. Y. He completed three of four aerials for 49 yards and a touchdown, the score coming on a 17-yard strike to split end Bobby Liptak of Yonkers, N. Y. Alleva, used sparingly for two years as McQuilken established himself as one of the college division's all-time passing greats, has made the most of his opportunities. In two seasons he has completed 24 of 34 aerials for 313 yards and four touchdowns with only one interception. That's a .705 completion average. He's 18 for 23 this year, a .782 pace, for 247 yards and three TDs. And a few of his throws have been dropped. His first one against G-burg, right on the money, was hobbled. Other sharpies against the Bullets were senior defensive end Larry Coffman of Frederick, Md., and sophomore safetyman Jack Tracy of Seaside Park, N. J. Coffman dropped Gettysburg runners four times behind the line of scrimmage, once teaming South Mountaineer Editor- Joe Whritenour The South Mountaineer is edited by Lehigh's OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION, Sam Connor '49, Director. Tracy was subbing for letterman Frank Kail, sidelined with a foot injury. The other safetyman, junior Jimmy Addonizio of Newark, N. J., realized the dream of all defensive backs when he returned a pass interception 67 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Tracy's first interception set the stage for a Lehigh drive deep into Gettysburg territory late in the opening session. An interception ended this threat but on a succeeding punt exchange the Bullets wound up with the ball on their 3-yard line. Quarterback Bob Crawford, trying to get off a surprise pass from his end zone, was smothered by Coffman and Probst for the first two points of the afternoon. Early in the second quarter McQuilken flipped an 8-yard pass to Schlegel who made a sensational one-handed grab, shook free and raced 60 yards for a touchdown.
