Vol. 15 — No. 8 OCTOBER 31, 1972 BETHLEHEM, PENNA. Gettysburg Stuns Lehigh, 30-28, On Field Goal With 0:27 Left Hopes Fade For Winning 72 Season Lehigh's hopes of a second straight winning football season were pushed to the brink Saturday as an inspired Gettysburg eleven shocked the Engineers at the battleground, 30-28, on a field goal in the last 27 seconds. The Bullets, after losing an early 13-0 lead, overcame deficits of 21-13, 28-21 and 28-27 to get the victory. They scored the last 10 points of the game before a rain- splattered Homecoming Day turnout of 4,400. Lehigh (3-5) now must win its final three starts against Colgate, Rochester and Lafayette to climb above the .500 mark. Colgate is Saturday's foe, at Hamilton, N.Y., and the Red Raiders will be solid favorites. Gettysburg (2-4) stunned the Engineers on the passing of quarterback John Yocum, the receiving of flanker Tom Groves, clutch defensive plays led by linebacker Jack Ludes, and the placekicking of Joe Pinkos. It was Pinkos who put one through the uprights from the 16- yard stripe on a third down maneuver with only 27 seconds remaining. He was credited with a 26-yard kick. Lehigh lost a game for the second straight week in which each team put four touchdowns on the board and a field goal determined the winner. Penn turned the trick at Taylor Stadium, 30-27. Quarterback Kim McQuilken had another 200-yard day for Lehigh, 220 to be precise, on 13 completions in 32 attempts with one interception and one touchdown. Yocum connected on 16 of 32 for 213 yards and three scores, with two interceptions. Lehigh outgained the Bullets on the ground, 165-87, and led 385-300 in total yards. The Engineers were plagued by penalties, however, picking up eight for 104 yards, and a few of them were exceedingly costly. All three of Yocum's TD tosses were gathered in by Groves, a speedy flanker with the knack of getting loose. They came on plays covering 38 yards (twice) and seven yards. McQuilken's score was a 41-yarder to Bill Schlegel of Troy, N.Y., who caught four aerials for 115 yards. Groves snagged six for 113. Each of Yocum's interceptions resulted in Lehigh TDs. The first was picked off by linebacker GETTYSBURG quarterback John Yocum runs an option play against Lehigh. Larry Warren (63) of the Engineers angles over to cut him down. Yocum's passing highlighted Bullets' 30-28 upset victory. Runners Win At Canisius Lehigh's cross country runners climaxed a successful week Saturday with a first-place finish in the annual Canisius Invitational at Buffalo, N.Y. Coach John Covert's squad was charged with 63 points to pace a 21-school field. Pittsburgh was" second with 66. Dave Antognoli of Edinboro College took individual laurels in 21:51.8 followed by Wayne Rogers of Lehigh, and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 22:10. Other Engineers to place included Tim Steele of Denville, N.J., ninth; Rick Bourie of Springfield, Mass., 15th; Jim Barnes of Denville, 18th, and Brian Faraci of Haverstraw, N.Y., 19th. Two hundred and fifty runners participated in the meet at Delaware Park, a 4.8 mile course. Earlier in the week Lehigh crushed Gettysburg on the Saucon Valley Fields, 16-47, with Rogers, Barnes, Bourie and Steele sharing first place clocked in 25:51 for the 5-mile distance. Linebacker Chuck Smith, of Westfield, N.J., intercepted the second and ran 24 yards to the Bullet 9 in the last quarter. Tailback Dan Ruppert, of Mid- dletown, N.Y., burst through center and went into the end zone on a first down play from that position. This TD recaptured the lead for Lehigh, 28-21, halfway through the quarter. Between those touchdowns the Engineers hung up two others on marches of 60 and 56 yards, each time after a punt. McQuilken's 41-yard toss to Schlegel accounted for one of these scores and McDonough's 19-yard dash off left end provided the other. Chuck Merolla converted after each touchdown. Gettysburg, which started strong with 13 points in the opening period, registered these on drives covering 75 and 63 yards. The Bullets lost the ball on a fumble during their first drive but a penalty against Lehigh nullified the recovery. They benefited from a 27-yard pass interference infraction during the (Continued on Page 2) Frosh Eleven 18-0 Victor Over Bisons Bill Connors, of Mechanic- sburg, Pa., drove two yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 60 yards for another Saturday as Lehigh's freshman football team upset Bucknell in Taylor Stadium, 18-0. Bob Liptak, of Yonkers, N.Y., raced 91 yards on a punt return for the other Little Engineer tally. Lehigh (2-2) has allowed only Gettysburg to cross its goal line in four starts. The Bullets won 27- 14. East Stroudsburg and Bucknell were whitewashed and Rutgers squeezed out a 2-0 victory on a safety. Connors' first touchdown culminated a 56-yard march. No Seats On The 50 Lehigh alumni planning to attend the football game with Lafayette, Saturday, Nov. 18, in Easton, will this year be seated on the Lafayette side at Fisher Field. This arrangement became necessary when 2,500 seats from the upper sections of the permanent stands on the visitors' side were eliminated due to construction of a field house in that area, and there is no room for temporary seating. Lehigh alumni have been alloted 5,170 seats in four sections of the stadium on the home side. All of these seats are between the 30- yard line and goal line. There will be 2,700 Lehigh student tickets available in the remaining lower section of the visitors' side where the Lehigh band also will be seated. Fisher Field's capacity has been reduced to 14,682.
