Jim McMillan, the greatest runner in Citadel football history, tallied on pickups of three and 66 yards Saturday night as the Cadets turned back a stubborn Lehigh eleven before 15,450 spectators at Charleston, S. C, 28-12. McMillan, who ripped Army's defenses for 126 yards one week earlier, gained 142 against the Engineers and clearly was the difference between a victory or a defeat. Lehigh, staging one of its most encouraging efforts of recent seasons, battled savagely to contain the speedy 6-foot, 190-pound tailback but couldn't keep him from rolling to his second straight 100-yards-plus weekend. Engineer quarterback Rick Laubach, of Pottsville, Pa., nailed down his ninth Lehigh passing mark with 14 completions in 28 attempts for 158 yards. This gives him a career total of 2,326 yards. Dan Nolan held the former standard of 2,317. Lehigh's running continued to impress as tailback Jack Paget, a sophomore from Fairfield, Conn., led the way with nine carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Jim Petrillo of Tuckahoe, N. Y., also a tailback, gained 47 yards in 14 attempts and sophomore fullback Justin Plummer, of Plainfield, N. J., picked up 31 yards and a TD in a dozen tries. Paget also unloaded a 60-yard quick kick. Lehigh, although trailing throughout, was down only 7-6 at halftime and 14-12 with only 1:42 remaining in the third period. McMillan's 66-yard run, a real back-breaker, came before the third quarter ended and the Cadets added a fourth touchdown in the final two minutes of the contest. The Engineers, after starting Coach's Comment "We played an encouraging football game, against a major opponent, and it wouldn't have taken too many breaks the other way to produce an upset.Quarterback Rick Laubach, tailback Jack Paget and linebacker Pete Tomaino were especially effective. We wanted to win very badly and everyone gave it a real fine try.". . . Fred Dunlap, football. slowly, came on strong during the second quarter when they took the play away from Citadel and appeared ready to take charge. With Laubach completing passes to Jerry Berger, Ron Matalavage, Paget and Petrillo the Engineers marched 69 yards to a TD. Petrillo and Paget turned in key runs during this surge with the latter carrying the final six through left tackle for the touchdown. Kicking specialist Bill Layton, of Williamsport, Pa., attempted (Continued on Page 2) First Test For Lehigh Soccermen Captain Brooks Heller of Springfield, Pa., one of the Middle Atlantic Conference's better fullbacks in 1967, will be at that post Wednesday (Oct. 2) for Lehigh University as the Engineers open their soccer schedule. New coach Gerry Leeman will be in charge when Lehigh travels to Allentown, Pa., for a battle against Muhlenberg College at 3 p.m. Muhlenberg upset the Engineers last year on the Saucon Valley Fields, 4-2. Heller's partner at fullback will be another letterman, Dick Langborgh of Chatham, N.J. They'll be protecting goaltender Mike Galardi of Livingston, N.J. Lehigh's attacking line will include Don Ferrell of Springfield, Pa., Simon Newton of Benford, N.Y., Don Klein of New York City, Dick Goat of Ridge- wood, N.J., and Pete Hall of Malvern, Pa. Halfback posts will be manned by Albert Laubenstein of Ashland, Pa., Pete Cumings ofBethlehem, Pa., and Dale Weiler of Garden City, N.Y. Leeman, highly-successful Lehigh wrestlingcoach, asked for the soccer position following the resignation of Bill Christian when the latter became ticket manager for the University's athletic department. Leeman will continue to direct the matmen in the winter. The Engineers' seasonal home debut is scheduled Friday, Oct.4, when Gettysburg invades the Saucon Valley Fields for a 3 p.m. test.
