Fisher Lehigh University Writers' Group Nearly 1,100 freshmen checked in at Lehigh on Aug. 28. TheincomingClassofl996 benefited from a record commitment of financial aid. The incoming freshmen represent 34 states and 24 nations. As of Aug. 14, Lehigh expected 1,099 freshmen, 49 more than the university's target of 1,050. "We've brought in a solid, talented and diverse class in a very competitive marketplace," said Pat Boig, Lehigh's director of admissions. To help ensure access to all qualified students at a time when federal and state funding of financial aid has not kept pace with rising costs, Lehigh has increased its financial aid budget to nearly $18 million. More than half of the entering freshmen receive financial aid, with 46 percent receiving support from university funds. Based on Lehigh's $23,600 cost of attendance, students receiving university aid demonstrated an average need of $14,689. The average Lehigh-funded scholarship is $10,389. Academic quality remained high, with the middle 50 percent of the class reporting SAT scores of 580-680 math and 470- 560 verbal. Lehigh does not report an "average" composite score.
