Mohler September?, 1988 Trustee Harold Mohler Dies; Lehigh Loses A True Friend Lehigh University trustee Harold S. Mohler, who served as chairman of the board of trustees from 1973 to 1985, died August 31 of a massive heart attack at his home in Hershey, Pa. He was a corporate member of the board of trustees at the time of his death. Mohler, a member of Lehigh's Class of 1948, was retired chairman of Hershey Foods Corp. In recognition of his outstanding and tireless service to the University, Lehigh named the building at 200 West Packer Ave. the Harold S. Mohler Laboratory. The facility was dedicated in June and houses the Institute for Robotics, the Center for Design and Manufacturing Innovation, the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Program and the department of industrial engineering. Reached in Atlanta, university president Peter Likins said, "I loved the man and will miss him dearly." Likins added that during his tenure as chairman of the board Mohler worked tirelessly to support the university during a period of growth that was unprecedented in Lehigh's history. The entire campus will mourn the loss of an outstanding friend and supporter. Mohler was first named to the board of trustees in 1971. Under his leadership the endowment at Lehigh increased from $46 million to more than $100 million. He served as national chairman of Lehigh's successful New Century Fund capital campaign that raised $112 million over the 12-year period that paralleled his tenure as board chairman. In 1984 the Asa Packer Society, named for Lehigh founder Asa Packer, honored Mohler with its first "Founder's Award," presented in recognition of "his outstanding leadership and dedication to his alma mater." That same year he was honored as one of the nation's outstanding volunteers in higher education by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Lehigh in 1975 and the L-in-Life Award from the Lehigh University Club of New York in 1977. He was a past president of the Lehigh Alumni Association. Born in Ephrata, Pa., Mohler joined Hershey Foods following his graduation from Lehigh in 1948 with a B.S. in industrial engineering. He rose through the company and was named chairman of the board in 1974. During World War II he served as a navigator on a B- 17, operating from Italy. Shot down over Austria on his 23rd combat mission, he was a prisoner of war in Germany for a year. He was awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the purple heart. Mohler was 69. He is survived by his wife, Melda, and three children. PROGRESS AT ATLSS Pages CALENDAR OF EVENTS Page 8
